Buying Old Furniture

We wanted to buy a piece of used furniture. Is there any advice on how to ensure, that it does not bring bed bugs? Or in general we simply should not buy any second hand furniture?

Strollers in Brownstone

so we just had our little baby girl. we live in rowhouse with 5′ high stoop and 4′ deep basement. it means wife needs to pull the stroller up or down the stairs. and she had problems with it. she got crazy stokke stroller just because it alegedly easier to pull up the stairs. but I do not see how.

so the question is: what you do about pulling stroller up the stoop? any particular tips about stokke stroller? she also asked aboul building rails to roll the stroller up the stoop. does it make any sense?

faux wood tiles for basement floor?

Hi,

I want to cover concrete floor in to be finished basement. The slab us very old and not very even but there are no issues with water.
My wifee wants something which looks like wood.
I am thinking to by tileflex tiles with faux wood finish. They will not rot, keep warm and hopefully go over uneven surfaces. They are expensive, but it is comparable to wood floor with underfloor.
Please tell me what you think. Is there alternatives? What was your experiences?

Hi, we have big not rectangular closet in our house. We thinking to by 92x40x22″ wardrobe boxes from IKEA and put them into the closet as shown above. The boxes will not have doors in them. I think it will look nicer, but will waste a lot of space. Did anybody have experience with this sort of setup? any advice or alternatives?

I tried HomeDepot’s ClosetMaid before, but it just does not fit well and looks ugly.

Weight of snow on the roof

With yet another snowstorm in forecast, I wonder how much snow can sit on my roof before it will cave in. Today I already saw some people clearing roofs of their brownstones. Does anybody on this board going to clear their roofs?

meter parking after the snowstorm

Bayridge avenues are clogged with SUVs left in the middle of the street by people who could not get them out of snow. My car is parked on the meter and I cannot get it out because somebody left his SUV right next to it. So are they really going to issue tickets to the cars on the meters today? I made a few photos my car been blocked and will contest the ticket.

It must be serious snow. Yesterday I saw DOT snow plow with chains fishtailing and crashing into parked car.

repost: lights for basement room

sorry forgot to add picture.

Hi, I have basement room with 7’10″ ceilings. I want to put light in a box around the perimeter of the room. Basically I will build a 8″x8″ box (as depicted on the picture) and put recessed lights to light the wall and another lights to defuse light from the ceiling. Normally it would be luminescent 4′ bulbs. But we really hate luminiscent lights. So is there any alternatives for the diffused lights?

In general, does this idea makes sense?

Christmas Lights on the Brownstone Top

I want to run a string of Christmas lights along the roof line of the house. Is the any pointers how to attach light there? Screw in screws from the front side of the house?

The plan is to connect lights via the extension cord which will go to the room outlet next to the window AC unit. Is the any fire issue I could expect?
