Claw foot shower curtain rods – which retailers have them in-stock?

Need help finding the right tenants but don’t know what to look for


Hi guys,

Looking for tenants for two apartments has been an eye-opening experience and I now realize that we do not know what to look for either good or bad.

I suppose we should know what to avoid, more than anything. How do we steer clear of deadbeats that are familiar with working the system. Not concerned with which reports to run (credit, etc) rather what red flags.

Also, what would you guys advise to look FOR in tenants?

Questions re: potential tenants


Hi guys,

Need your opinions on a couple of possible tenants.

One has 520 credit, not great income but Dad helps out. Roommate has good credit, good income, stable job. both are mid-20s. Co-signer may be an option but would be half-way across the country.

Others are self-employed with decent credit and documented income.

Which is more risky?

Is it possible to re-plate a light fixture from brass to chrome?


Hi brownstoners,

My husband and I found a wonderful light fixture at one of the antique shops on Bedford for dirt cheap but it is brass and we would like it to be chrome. Is it possible to have the fixture re-plated or refinished so it is chrome? The fittings are unique so we cannot replace them. Does anyone have a recommendation and an idea of cost?

Electrician doesn’t clean up after himself


I’ve never had to completely rewire a house and we hired an electrician, who is a friend of a friend. He leaves our house in a complete mess every time he is here, including his chinese take out boxes, empty water bottles, debris and the kicker was when our original tin ceiling came down while we were at work and didn’t even bother to tell us. The latter aside, is it normal and should we expect him to clean up after himself? He says he will but would charge us an extra$100/day.

Thoughts?

Best Insulation for Small Extension


Hi brownstoners,

Our small mud room in the rear of the house is absolutely freezing with major drafts coming in to the house to the point that the first floor is almost unlivable in this weather. We took the room down to the studs in November, threw some R-13 insulation and sheet rock up and that is obviously not helping at all. Any recommendations on what I can do to fix this? Should I throw my hands up and get a contractor in to fix this?

Recommendation for appliances and plumbing fixtures


Hi brownstoners,

Just wanted to share my recent experiences with Steve at appliancesbuyphone.com, who someone else referred on this site. I cannot tell you how much money I have saved in purchasing appliances with him since he does not charge tax or delivery in NYC. His prices are also a little lower than Sears and are actually delivered by PC Richard and always the day after I order.

Secondly, for those of you doing high-end bath renovations, the Home Depot in BedStuy on the corner of Dekalb and Nostrand is running a 75% off floor sample sale on their high-end Kohler fixtures which are located upstairs next to the appliances. There is a lot of good stuff left there so if you want to upgrade your bathroom, now is a good time to do so.
