central air unit on parapet walls
Quick question. We had a central air system installed in our attached townhouse. The steel beam on which the unit rests is placed on the parapet walls. One of our neighbours says that half of the parapet wall is his (i.e., if the width of the wall is 8inches, then 4 is his and 4 is ours). He says that the beam takes up all of 8 inches (it doesn’t hang over) and that he doesn’t have a problem but if he sells the house, purchasers may have a problem.
My contractor is telling me that the parapet wall is common and that is not shareable 50-50. In other words, it belongs to both of us and that it is standard to have unit installed like that. Anybody know what the right answer is? Many thanks!
basement
We are starting work on finishing our basement. The engineer had drawn up plans recommending a vapor barrier on the floor of the basement before putting concrete. The contractor says he doesn’t recommend it because it becomes breeding ground for termites. He says he’ll do it but we’ll have to sign a release. Any advice on whether the engineer or the contractor is right? Thanks.
contractor
Has anybody worked with Frank Vitrano (contractor)? I’d appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
clanking radiators
I am having a plumber come over to check out (and hopefully fix) the super loud clanking noise that my steam heat radiators make when they start working. Anybody know the ballpark of a price that it should cost to fix this? THanks!
Noise-making radiators
Our radiators in a new house make a terrible clanking noise when they heat up. What’s the cause of that and how to remedy it? Thanks!
Radiators Pitch
We need to pitch our radiators. Can anybody recommend a good plumber for this kind of job?
Thanks.
Contractors feedback
Has anybody worked with either Curt Epstein or Mike Albino (contractors)? Positive and negative feedback is appreciated.
Boiler replacement
We had maintenance performed on our existing boiler (dated 1994) by Vigilante. They recommended replacing it and, after measuring our radiators, quoted us $7,000-$12,000 (depending on the plan) for a new Birnham IN-6 (150-250 BTU). We’d like to get other estimates. What companies/individuals would you recommend? Thanks!
