General Contractor’s License


Is there no such thing as a general contractor’s license in NYC?

DOB website says the following:
A – The Department of Buildings does not have any jurisdiction over general contractors. In fact, there is no General Contractors License in New York City. There is a Home Improvement Contractor License, administered by the Department of Consumer Affairs. Call 3-1-1 for more information regarding Home Improvement licenses.

Can anyone familiar with the topic explain to me how this works? What kind of oversight is there?
