Free Salvaged Flooring
We salvaged this flooring from a bedroom and planned to re-install it in a hallway, but plans changed. We did install some of it in a closet, which is pictured above.
We stripped out the nails and it’s ready for installation. There’s about 150sf, give or take. It’s 2 1/4″ oak tongue in groove. Boards are short – 10″-30″.

Sealing painted cabinet doors
We just finished painting our cabinet doors. They look great but they’re already getting dinged up. Can anyone recommend a sealant to protect them? Preferably something that can be rubbed instead of brushed (since we worked our butts off to spray rather than brush the doors).
Mixed experience with Windows We Are
Just finished doing 15 windows (10 landmark windows, 5 regular) with Windows We Are. They came highly recommended on this forum.
The quality of the installation work was excellent, and the price was good, but everything on the administrative end was difficult.
It took almost a year to get our Landmarks permit sorted out, and it was 18 months between us walking into their store and them finishing the job. They didn’t come when they said they’d come, they didn’t return phone calls, they started the installation without some of the windows, and fifteen other kinds of hassles. All of them seemed to have to do with administrative disorganization.
They did do excellent work, once they actually arrived. But if you use them, plan to manage the process VERY actively.
Also, if you need Landmarks approval, make sure you’re dealing with Andrew Blumetti – our permits went nowhere for eleven months, and then we got connected with him and had them in five weeks.
Problem with Dragonetti Tree Service
Dragonetti gave me the best estimate to do some work related to tornado damage in my yard. But once we decided to go with them, it went downhill.
First I had problems with the office not understanding the estimate and confusing the two different trees we needed work done on. Then they insisted the removal of the crown of the tree that came down was not included in the estimate, even though the estimator and I stood in the backyard and had a conversation about access to the neighbor’s yard in order to remove it.
We’ve now lost two weeks on this process, and we have to go back to the beginning.
I called Dragonetti because they were recommended here, but I did not have a good experience with them.
Free Vinyl Sliding Doors, Good Condition
We have some exterior sliding patio doors that were installed on the interior of our house (dividing two rooms) before we bought it (ie, we did not do anything that whackadoo). We’re about to demo that room, and wondered if anyone could use the doors. They’re about 5′ wide, 7′ tall, in good condition. Contact me at jenabrams [at] mindspring.com.
Recommendation for Fatos Roofers
Just finished getting our skylight repaired by Fatos, recommended here, and wanted to say we had a great experience. Their price was significantly lower than the other quote we got, they came when they said they’d come, and they did what they said they’d do.
But they were better than just that. They had laid a temporary membrane while the skylight was being built. That membrane survived the tornado the other day. And when they came to install the final skylight, they did a handful of minor repairs on the roof without charge. Can’t recommend these guys highly enough.
Good experience with AAA Stair Builders
Just wanted to shout out AAA Stair Builders in Middle Village. I went over there to buy a replacement stair tread and they went out of their way to help me with both the tread and the end caps. Really nice guys.
Free MDF 6-panel door
We bought a 6-panel primed MDF door blank and are not going to use it. It has a hole bored for a doorknob. 80″x28″. Call me at 917-364-2208.
Advice on Re-Using Flooring?
We’ve ripped out a wood floor that was in decent condition in order to put a new bathroom in. We’d like to re-use it. It’s nothing special, but we’d like to save the money and we prefer to keep material out of the landfill if possible.
We have a large closet that needs to be floored, as well as a garden level hallway that is not the main entrance. That’s where we’re planning to put it. The closet gives us a low-stakes place to test out our skills.
The boards are tongue-in-groove, and currently the old nails are sticking out. We’ve weeded out the boards that are not re-usable.
Questions:
1) should we try to tap the nails out or should we hack them off with an angle grinder?
2) will this be roughly like a new floor installation, or are there special problems that will come up?
3) any other advice on how to do this successfully?
