Cedar Fence Installation
Seeking recommendations from folks who have had a wood fence installed in the last couple of years.
Also seeking recommendations for a good general carpenter — not a cabinetmaker. Someone who could build basic shelves, planters.
Landscaper
Anyone had any experience with Sasha Newman-Ladjen of Little Miracles Designs?
Window Replacement Reqs Sought
We have a non-landmarked 4-story brownstone. About 30 years ago, we installed relatively inexpensive (vinyl, I think; definitely not wood) replacement windows. They’re cold, they leak, the gas seal between the panes is gone in some of them. I’m considering replacing them with, probably, vinyl-clad wood windows.
I have seen Adler, EZ-Tilt, and Windows We Are mentioned on blog. Have any of you had personal experience with these companies, good or bad? Or any other company? Also helpful: quesions to ask, things I need to know, when I’m getting estimates.
Doors
So far have not been able to fine front doors through salvage and am beginning to consider having doors made. Has anyone used Southslope Woodworks to make new front doors? Other door makers that you recommend?
Seeking recommendation for new hatch
My front hatch leaks like a sieve and I’d like a recommendation for an iron worker who can repair or replace it. Anyone had recent experience with DVS? Bay Ridge Iron Works? Others that you liked?
Venting a high-efficiency boiler
We’ve installed a mod/con boiler. The specs say it can be vented directly through the back wall, and in fact this is the preferred method over venting through chimney. But neighbor objects to the “smoke” (water vapor) blowing into her yard — it’s at least 15 feet from her windows and door. This seems to be a gray area in the code. Have others run into problem with back-wall venting of mod-con boiler? Must the boiler be vented through the chimney (which would mean lining 4 stories with PVC pipe)?
Bonus for workmen?
I’ve had the same crew of workers in my house for 8 months and we’re almost done. Guys are pausing over the holidays but coming back after New Year. Is it inappropriate to give them a small bonus on their last pre-Christmas day?
