ALSO- this is an image of the apt. we are in the process of buying and i was hoping to get some suggestions of wood stains that will complement the exposed brick wall.

My husband and I are in the process of buying an apartment in brooklyn heights. We would like to completely redo the floors as they are mix matched from years of partial repair and also to fix the 2″ slope (requiring them to go to the subfloor). This is our first adventure into renovating and I was wondering if anyone has comments concerning types of wood? I am specifically wondering about the really dark stained wood and whether it shows scratches and dust easier? also it’s not a big apartment but has 9′ ceilings and I’ve heard some people say it makes the space seem smaller and some say it doesn’t matter…..

is there anything we need to be weary of with going to the subfloor?

I’ve looked through the archives and haven’t found anything specific to these questions so I’d really appreciate any thoughts, experiences and comments you might have,
