Door Separating From Top Hinge!

Help! As can be seen in the attached picture, my door has separated itself from the top hinge. The door pictured is the door that leads into my apartment (no worries, this is the second door one would have to get through to get to me, so safety isn’t an issue and doesn’t make this an urgent matter.) This is a solid door and it has been hanging here just fine for many years. Is there a common reason that this happened? I’m considering replacing the door (I’m assuming it can’t be fixed) myself, but if this is something that is the result of improper hanging, I can ask my landlord to have a handyman come by. (I’d rather do it myself if possible and not bother the LL) Any ideas?

In case the picture doesn’t post here, you can see the pic on my Flickr page:

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

As you all recall, at our Holiday Party in December we had a toy drive to benefit the families who use the services of the Red Hook Community Center. This weekend I received a formal thank-you letter from our contact person there and I wanted to share it with you:

“This letter is to thank you and your team for the Christmas donations in support of Village Care, Red Hook Community Service Center. The children and parents greatly appreciated your donations. Your donations allowed so many needy families enrolled in our parent programs to have a merry Christmas.
We will continue to provide Healthy Workshops, HIV Testing and Computer skills to the families in Red Hook and we look forward to your continued support in 2011.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Luvenia Suber
Site Supervisor, RHCSC”

Thanks again to everyone who generously donated toys and supplies!

Taking pictures all around
Writing up stories

Watching real estate
Hating shiny floors too bright
What fun it is to hate kitchens
That simply don’t look right!

Oh, Brownstoner, Brownstoner
How we love this site
It provides a distraction
Through the day and the night, hey!

PARTY PARTY PARTY!!!

Twas the night before Christmas and over on Brownstoner
No creatures were stirring; no renters, no owners
Marketplace listings presented with care
In hopes that a buyer soon would be there

Preservationists cry before a hideous fedders
Dave in the OT watching stocks with the bettors
Emily at her computer, Mr. B at the helm
For sale in the forum, shelves by West Elm!

In the House of the Day arose such a clatter
We dashed to that thread to see what was the matter
BHO was predicting such gloom
“You’ve seen the last of this housing boom!”

In the BOTD, everyone knows
That Montrose Morris will provide great prose
Whoa….what to my wondering eyes did appear?
The Loki Lounge with both wine and beer!

A party thrown by two lively ladies
Who arrive on the bus, not a Mercedes
With cookies and glitter far as the eye can see
And toys to donate to the RHCC

Come Emily, Come Jon, Biff Champion, we call!
Minard and Ringo, we’re expecting you all!
Please join the party, it’s fun, we swear!
It’s time to dress up and do your hair!

Bring a great toy to donate to the kids
And just be very thankful you’re not on the skids!
Don’t forget the grab bag gift, too
If you don’t comply, we’ll surely boo-hoo!

We’ll see you all on the 9th of December
Put it in your calendar, so you’ll remember
We’ll party and laugh, with nary a brawl
COBBLESNAPS WISHES HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!

HOLIDAY PARTY/CHARITY BASH!

On the 9th day of December Brownstoner gave to me
Twelve Bars with babies
Eleven AY drawings
Ten nimbies kvetching
Nine missing widgets
Eight CG curb cuts
Seven Vox Pop bailouts
Six baristas quitting
FIVE LAAAAAAAPS IN NORAAAH’S POOOOOOL!!!
Four What bannings
Three silly gifts
Two Stiff drinks
And a chance to give to the needy :-)

Sooo, what are you doing on the evening of December 9th? You already have plans? WELL CANCEL THEM!!!

Join the Brownstoner posters for our Second Annual Holiday Party on December 9th from 6pm until we drop. This year we will be taking our merry little selves to Loki Bar & Lounge, located at 304 5th Avenue at the corner of 2nd Street in Park Slope.

Last year we exchanged silly dollar store gifts and guess what??? We are doing it again! So get to the nearest dollar store and buy one gift – the silliest, craziest, most useless thing you can get your hands on! – wrap it or put it in a small gift bag and bring it to the party! Our Second Annual Goofy Gift Grab-bag will not disappoint!

This year we are also doing our best to give to local needy residents. It’s time to give back to the community that we love so much. This year, CobbleSnaps Productions asks that each party attendee bring a gift to donate to the Red Hook Community Center holiday toy drive. We need toys for young kids all the way up to teenagers. We also need donations of new blankets for the seniors. PLEASE DO NOT WRAP THE GIFTS! Leave them in their original packaging, but no wrapping. If you wish to put it in a gift bag that’s fine. Also, if you purchase a gift that runs on batteries, please supply the batteries to go with the toy. Please find it in your hearts (and wallets!) to give a gift to those in need this season. If you can’t stay to attend the party, please consider stopping by Loki to drop off a gift for the RHCC. We will gather up all the gifts and take them to the Red Hook Community Center and make the donation in the name of Brownstoner.com and the Brownstoner.com readers.
We look forward to seeing familiar faces and new posters. We also look forward to getting a great stash of gifts to donate to the RHCC. Come join in the fun!

Loki Bar and Lounge is located at 304 5th Avenue (at the corner of 2nd Street) in Park Slope. Take the M or R train to Union Street or the B63 bus to 5th Avenue and 3rd Street. http://tinyurl.com/y8vo5zx

Holiday Party!

Hello everybodeeeeee! It’s about that time again! The Brownstoners will be throwing a swinging holiday party on December 9th, so save the date in your calendars! We haven’t firmed up the location just yet, so stay tuned for more information.

Remember last year when we exchanged silly dollar store gifts? Well, we’re doing it again…HOORAY! Get back to the dollar store and find one ridiculous item, wrap it or put it in a small gift bag and bring it to the party for the 2nd Annual Brownstoner Readers’ Goofy Gift Grab-bag. Please don’t spend more than a dollar on the gift (excluding tax of course).

Also, on a more serious note, the holiday season is known as a time of giving. For all the hardships we experience, we must remember that there are plenty of people in our own community who struggle in a way we may not be able to comprehend. Please find it in your hearts (and wallets!) to give a gift to those in need this season.

Choosing the Right Primer

Oil-based or water-based? Zinsser or Kilz? Which gives the best coverage over dark paint colors (chocolate brown) and stains? Where can I get a 5 gallon drum of it? My preference is for one that’s no or very low V.O.C.

Also, I have quite a few walls and ceilings to do. Would you recommend using a paint sprayer? Are they hard for an amateur to use?

How Long Does a Stove Last?

So, the stove in my rental apt is acting funky. If I have something in the oven and, while that’s going, try to light an eye on top, it either won’t light or takes a while (about a minute). Once I get the one eye going and try to turn on another eye (yeah, I cook several things at once), it refuses to light. I have to turn off the oven, wait a minute, and then light the second eye on the stove top, then wait another minute before turning the oven back on. Once all three things are going, the oven will cut off and I’ll hear it re-light a couple of times during the cooking process. This stove is 11 years old and only began doing this in the past month or two. Is this a sign that the oven is on its last legs and I need to speak to my landlord about getting a new one? Or could this be an issue with the gas line and I need to contact National Grid?

How to Get Rid of This?

I’ve got these scratches/marks (???) on the bottom of my tub. I’ve tried scrubbing with bleach and various other cleansers and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Nothing seems to get it out. The began to appear approximately a month ago. What is this? How do I get it out/off?
