Steel Well?

My contractor who is renovating basement at the moment has asked me about a steel well. I think he is referring to the trap door on street side which we would like to have a stairs going up into the well for egress. He is from out of state so is not familiar with suppliers here so it is my job to find one. I searched the forum and of course Dave in BedSty came up. Dave – anyone? Can you send me a site describing exactly what it is, what to buy?
thx

A long shot – floor tiles

A very long shot. Just wondering if anyone has the black and white tiles – 40 square feet needed for basement reno. Have checked all Home Depot stores but would have to order online and would take a week or so to deliver. Would need approx 40 sq.ft. to complete job. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&productId=100555192&R=100555192
OR, if anyone wants to get rid of floor tiles in either a lot of 70 sq. ft. or 150+ sq. ft., I just need them for storage sections of basement. Was way ahead of the curve on last project but not so on this one. I will blame it on the weather!

Basement Renovation – Yet Again!

I am finally, after 10 years, going to “fluff up” my basement – yes, I believe it can be done. It is a cellar. Electric/gas meters in one small room (street side). Boiler room (garden side). There are two trap doors on each side. I would like to a) put in flooring (wood, laminate, cork, tile): install a small shower area (I was told that an actual toilet would require extensive plumbing). Sink would be nice..
And, more importantly, somehow create an egress of some sort-either to street or garden-and some type of ventilation system. It will be used as a guest room (for family) and/or recreation/storage area. Advice re: shower, flooring, ventilation, codes, etc. would be most appreciated. I have checked site for advice but am seeing alot of conflicting opinions.

A while ago, I found a reference for boiler repairman. His name was Tommy – number 917-907-2315. However, I cannot find him when I search the site. Just forgot what company he was with.

Bullnose Tile

I have bullnose tile for base of wall. However, my contractor suggests placing subway tile on wall and laying the bullnose tile over the subway tile so that it creates illusion of baseboard. Thought it would look more streamlined with bullnose tile and the subway tile directly above flush with the bullnose. Any advice/suggestions greatly appreciated!

Heat Not Working

Heat was working on Friday morning and worked last night – after I fiddled around with thermostat. I have no idea what is what on the boiler. Just switched the boiler off and then on. And heard click sound. Anything I should check for to try and troubleshoot?
Boiler is probably around 20 years old, my guess and looks a bit rusty in places.

Replace Door Handles

Would like to replace all my doors handles which are cheapies with one that I bought in Anthropologie (on sale). However it seems that the bar is too long. Can I bring these to a hardware to get cut to right size? Or will I need a professional to perform this task.

Safety latches on iron grates

Am trying to re-finance. Thought everything was “in the bag” but received a request from the mortgage specialist.
-OPUS REQUIRED REPAIRS (SAFETY LATCHES ON WINDOW BARS)
When I phoned to ask what this was, I was told that I would need safety latches on the iron grates which are on the windows of the ground floor of the house. Apparently, in case of fire, one would need to be able to climb out the window on the ground floor.
I feel like I am partaking in a really bad computer game (games which I never play!) or am on a very moronic version of the “Amazing Race”. Anyone experienced this hurdle?
