Hood Size vs Stove
I need professional advice on a range hood decision. I am absolutely in lust with this Italian range hood and my contractor told me that I shouldn’t get it because it wont perform well with my stove. My stove is 30″ (4 burners) and this hood is 26″. I have read several threads here on GardenWeb that it is mandatory to go with an exact size hood or larger for best performance. However, I want this specific design, it’s gorgeous and there’s absolutely nothing even close to it that I was able to find. I don’t cook a lot and I don’t fry or steam. Can someone please reassure me that going with a 26″ in hood will be okay for my 30″ stove, considering my “non-pro” cooking habits.
Dilemma w/ hood installation
So, I’m at the point of the renovation where I need to buy all my kitchen appliances, and I’m in the process of picking out the vent hood. Yesterday I spent about an hour at Futuro Futuro’s showroom looking for a suitable hood. I found the “Concorde†design which I’m in love with (link below), but I have a dilemma.
My problem is that the company recommended that you install the hood about 26â€-30†above the cook top, but I’m 5′ 11†so I imagine it being very uncomfortable to cook with a hood in your line of sight. I asked if I could have the hood at 34†– 36†above the counter, but the hood guys said that it will make a big difference in suction.
How should I approach this problem? Should I disregard the recommendations by the manufacturer and install it 34â€-36†above the stove (and risk losing suction), or should I lift part of the counter with the cooktop by a few inches? I also have the option of going with a larger hood to compensate on the height (they make a 48†wide version), but the bigger hood will cost more.
Need some advice maybe from contractors, installers or just anyone who understand my concern and can share their opinions.

Barely Used Kitchen Aid dishwasher Drawers
Barely used Kitchen Aid dishwasher drawers. It was brand new when we moved in and we used it about 5 times. We have to get rid of it because we are redoing our kitchen and the dimensions do not work.
See this link for full details on the model.

Washer Repair in Brooklyn?
Hello – I need help with the repair of a front loading Frigidaire washing machine. It does not properly rinse and spin. Can anyone give a recommendation for a reasonable repairman? I was hoping to use either Pete from Father & Son or Bank Repair. Pete hasn’t been able to return my calls (I think he may have been sick) and Mr. Bank doesn’t do front loaders (although he was very polite on the phone).
Anyone else???
Appliances
Three years ago I bought new appliances for a renovated brownstone. I had done my research and thought I found some decent mid-range appliances. Since then, the OTR microwave (LG) died and was replaced, the washing machine (Kenmore Elite) was totally rebuilt (under warranty), and the 30″ Whirlpool gas range had the computer touch-pad replaced 18 months ago to the tune of $300. Last Friday the replacement died as well. Reading comments on Amazon, AjMadison, etc., it seems like GE and KitchenAid have somolar problems with their touch-pads.
I wonder if appliances are designed to fail so that the consumer will revive the American economy (too cynical?).
I’m now in the market for a new gas range. I was looking for one with knobs, not a touch pad, but these are available only in the high-end industrial ranges, which I don’t like and cannot afford.
Any experience with Bosch? Let’s see if the Germans can do a better job.
Water Heater Warranty Void!
I have a three family brownstone in Brooklyn. Two 40 gallon water heaters in the basement plumbed together. On one heater the pilot won’t stay lit, so I called GE(American Hot Water Heater) about getting it fixed under warranty. It’s taken a week and a half and a number of calls to finally get someone out, who’s coming today, but when I was trying to get them here and explaining that I have tenants I have to provide hot water to for emphasis, The GE rep came back and said because the water heater is in a multi family, the warranty is void. Anyone else ever run into this? Any ideas about what to do about it? NY state dept of consumer affairs. All brownstones as I understand it were originally built as single family dwellings.
Antique Fridge Repair?
HELP! I bought a beautiful antique 1950′s fridge and I am having the hardest time finding someone who can come fix it. Looking for a repairman who cares about antiques and would be willing to spend time taking a look.
Five Free Stoves
I’ve had these sitting under a tarp since last year when I tried to find them a good home…As much as it pains me they are going to the recycling center on Friday unless someone wants them! There is the large one in the pic and some 20″ Welbilt stoves as well. Email for directions info145halsey at yahoo dot com. You can come see them, measure them, whatever. They will need TLC but were working when they were removed from the property.
Fingers crossed someone can use them somehow.

Can all-in-one w/d replace washer/gas dryer
My stacked washer/gas dryer is now in need of a 2nd repair. I am thinking of buying an all-in-one washer/dryer to save some space. Is there anything special I need to have done if I am no longer going to use the gas line to the dryer? I would rather know up front what I should be looking to have done. Thank you.
