Can I leave early?

On March 11, my landlord gave me notice that he would not be re-newing my lease (lease is up on May 7th). Well, after some apt hunting I may have found a place but they want a move in date of April 1st or April 15. Can I leave my apartment..either on by Apr. 1 or pay half the rent and leave on April 15th. Or am I obligated to stay until the lease is up on May 7th?
