Leak from smoke dectector??

There was a leak through smoke detector in 3rd floor apt in 3 floor townhouse. Our tenant said that there was some noise from detector and a part in the middle of detector came off, hanging with metal spring and then leak started(about a glass of water). There is no hole in the roof,,.
Anyone had same experience before? Smoke detector is quite old…
