Cedar boards?

Hey brownstoners,
I’m planning to construct some simple planter boxes for a rooftop vegetable garden this spring, and I hear I’m supposed to use cedar because it’s rot-resistant. Too bad one 8′ 1×6 board runs about $12 retail. anyone know where I might score some cheap cedar boards? it does NOT have to be pretty, and even if the sizes are irregular, I can get creative…

or am i being silly, and should I just use cheap pine and rebuild them in a couple years when they fall apart?
