farmhouse vent (for plumbing)?

We have something called a farmhouse vent for our kitchen and laundry sinks – I think it vents into the walls. We also have a recurring sewer-y smell coming from cracks in the floor. I think these two might be related and am considering having a plumber vent these sinks to the outside – think that would solve our odor issue? Anyone know anything about a farmhouse vent?
