J-51 Tax Abatement Nightmare
Has anyone else been having problems getting a J-51 tax abatement? I live in a condo building in Clinton Hill, on St. James and Atlantic. When my partner and I bought the property 2 1/2 years ago we did so thinking that a J-51 tax abatement would soon be in place. WE STILL DON”T HAVE THE ABATEMENT. There are 11 units in our building and all of the unit owners keep paying more and more in taxes each time the building is assessed. It’s a real financial burden. We have made repeated calls to the J-51 department for help and we’ve gotten nowhere. We’ve written a letter indicating the tax burden of each unit and asking for relief. Nothing came of it. I see so many listings in this neighborhood that promise a J-51 abatement. Does anyone actually have one? If you’re thinking of buying a property that has an abatement, think twice. What can be done to get this abatement? Seriously, does it really take 2 1/2 years to push the paperwork through? What’s the problem at the J-51 office and what can property owners due to get relief from this tax burden that wasn’t supposed to be there in the first place???
