Windows -Wood or aluminum or other?

I have to replace all the windows in the upstairs of my over 100 year old brownstone. The frames are all rotting. What kind of windows are recommended? (wood, aluminum or something else?) I do not want the most expensive nor the cheapest. Also, which place is recommended to to do the work competently and at a reasonable rate? Has anyone done this recently? Thanks
