window bars vs fire dept. window gates

We are buying a condo at the ground level and want to install ironwork for security. The building management told us that we need to use fire dept. approved gates (which we think are ugly). However, the building has a sprinkler system and there are two means of egress to the apt. Does anyone know what the rules are on this?
