Fire Escape Requirement

I am purchasing a home in bensonhurst which is a legal three family..although really only used as a two family. There is a very old fire escape attached to the back of this house and we were looking to remove it. Just wondering if there was any reason for the fire escape…ie a requirement under the code for 3-F homes??
