Building Ventilation System Off. Problem?
I’ve noticed that the ventilation system for my building has been turned off for the past week during the day (clears air out of bathroom and kitchen). Its been real nasty in the bathroom in the am – like a sauna, smoke from other units in my line can be smelled in the bathroom, and the whole building smells worse than before. This is a 50+ multifamily in Brooklyn. The super tells me they turn it off in the winter except overnight (midnight to 6 am) to conserve heat (in theory the weak fan is sucking all of the precious heat out of the building). I look at the NYC Housing Maintenace Code and call b*llsh*t: by law it should be on at least 18 hours a day in bathroom and all day in kitchen if they are separate. Can anyone think of any legitimate (legal) reason for allowing this turn off before I go ballistic on building management? Thanks.
