I live in a Brooklyn loft and want to have a wall from floor to ceiling that would act as a divider for the space (between kitchen and sleeping area). Basically, it’s a 6 foot long internal wall that comes out from an existing wall – it doesn’t create a room, but partially separates. It would come very close to an existing light that hangs from the ceiling, and also cross through a sprinkler pipe as well as come within 6 inches of a sprinkler valve. I’ve seen people say that one doesn’t have to be worried about building code unless a room is being created, but I’d think that there are specific fire code rules around lights and sprinklers. Anyone know whether I can build a wall through the sprinkler pipe and minimum distances for the light and sprinkler valve? I don’t want to employ an engineer for this nor do I want building/fire code problems if I sell this apartment in a few years.
