Replacing Windows in Park Slope Historic District

I’ve just discovered, in the course of investigating the purchase of the coop in which I now rent, that the board believes the windows will have to be replaced because, in the past, when the windows were replaced, an “unhistoric” model was used, and the building is in violation.

The windows appear to be black aluminum frame double pane glass sash windows, not unlike the ones on the adjacent building of identical design. Does anyone know why these are not acceptable? And jumping ahead, is there some way to camouflage the existing ones so that they do not need to be replaced?

  1. Yes, it does have to be wood. The mouldings must also match what was originally there. Landmarks has pictures of every landmarked house in the city to reference. I am going through this with them right now.

  2. This must mean your building is in a Landmark District.

Do you think they had black aluminum windows in 1890? I don’t think so.
