We just bought a brownstone in CH and need to redo the kitchen completely. We would love to have a custom kitchen, but cannot afford it, so we have decided to buy an Ikea kitchen. However, since we are redesigning the area where the kitchen is (the kitchen is currently in the back of the garden floor and we are merging the room next to it to make it bigger) we would like to use one of the professional installers and designers that ikea recommend. Has anyone done this before? Our contractor will do the plumbing, removal structural wall, etc, but we need someone to give us some design idea. We tried using the Ikea design program, but what we wants seems a little more complicated.

  1. I just put in an ikea kitchen. I am very happy with it. I did all the planning myself. My friend used a company that designs ikea kitchens and installs. I don’t know the name of it though, but if you keep searching it shoud be pretty easy to find. There are people who specialize in it. Also check out ikeafans.com. There are a lot of tips for using the computer program and plus you can post your design for suggestions. I put in a cool modification that I got from the site. I saw better design ideas on that web site than my friend got from the ikea designer!

  2. “How about instead, pay an architecture student or interior design student a few hundred bucks and they’ll lay one out for you. You can find someone on craigslist”
In my experience architects are not necessarily the best folks to design kitchens. I think it really is a specialty and I would get someone with some experience with kitchens.

  3. I can help you out with designing and installing Ikea kitchen (also can suggest better quality low budget cabinets) (917)803-1465 Sal

  4. You can plan it yourself but you’ll need electric and plumbing in the right places. After all it’s your kitchen the most lived in room in the house. Good luck with your new project.

  5. ummm. You are recommending that someone have their contractor, plumber or electrician “Design” their kitchen? What?

How about instead, pay an architecture student or interior design student a few hundred bucks and they’ll lay one out for you. You can find someone on craigslist.

Let’s leave the designing to the professionals.

  6. I have heard that the Ikea planning department no longer helps you plan the kitchen. Instead they have you use their computer program.

  7. Ikea kitchens are great. They won’t last a lifetime but for the money the can’t beat it. Installed a Ikea kitchen in our Manhattan apt. and ended up selling is for a great price. Planning on getting another Ikea kitchen in our brownstone. Take time to plan, work with Ikea planning department, your contractor and/or plumber and electrician and you will end up with kitchen you’ll be proud of.
