My husband and I recently had a baby and we need a bigger space (we live in a small rent stable apt. in Clinton Hill). We really don’t know how to get started at all. Almost all of our friends are renters, so they can’t offer us advice. Is there some sort of non-profit or other trusted organization or group we can go to for the “how to’s” of buying a place. Many of the brokers we see recommend that we buy a multiple family building (in Crown Heights, Bedstuy or the like), and rent out the other units…that seems like such a risk but we’re open to the idea.

Please…any advice would be so appreciated! Also, advice about an honest and helpful broker, lawyer and whatever else we need would be great! We have about $60K to put down, and would like our own monthly to be somewhere in the range of $2K. School district isn’t really an issue, but safety and services are – and we’d love to stay in brownstone brooklyn.
