Most Efficient Hot Water

I have been followingthis post about tankless water heaters, and am curious about what folks think is the most efficient way to handle hot water for three floors and two households.

I was assuming that tankless would be the way to go, but it sounds like you need to install a unit (and 220) in every kitchen and every bathroom, and that’s very expensive!

Any other thoughts about getting as efficient and green as possible with hot water?
