New Stoop Railing
I had our stoop redone and now we need to install an iron railing and gate — the original one was unsalvageable.
We had Vinnie’s come out and provide a quote –650. He seemed to have experience with this type of job. Has anyone had good/bad experience with Vinnie’s or can you recommend anyone else that has done good work. We really want someone to do a great job on this.
Thanks.
Cellar improvement suggestion
Hi,
We want to make our cellar into a less dusty and grimy place and am looking for suggestions. We have a cement floor (unsealed) and stone walls (also unsealed) and exposed beams so that you can see the floor boards above you. We don’t want to spend tons of money as we use the cellar for storage and laundry machines (which one day we will likely move) but would like to remove the grit that builds up on everything down there. We already use de-humidifiers in the summer as it gets damp, but not actually wet.
Is there any downside to sealing the floor and the walls? We had a flood once (a hose broke when we were out of town) and the water just seeped down into the cement so we assume that one downside of sealing would be that water would have to be pumped out if it flooded again. Anything else? Could sealing hurt the stone walls?
Also we thought about installing some sheetrock on the ceiling between the beams (the ceiling is too low to sheetrock under the beams). We could not do it everywhere due to pipes but it could at least improve the situation. Any other suggestions for the ceiling?
Any thoughts on any of the above would be great. Also, if anyone knows of a person who might take on this type of a job, please send recommendations as well.
Thanks!
lincrusta glazing
I am trying to find the best method of removing my applied glaze from a very intricate Lincrusta design: wiping off all the high spots, without touching the lowest (surface) plane and the most recessed crevasses. Any help would be useful – Thanks
Crown Heights North Landmark Status
It was briefly mentioned in a previous thread that some areas in Crown Heights North will be receiving landmark status in June. Does anyone have any information or know where I can get the information for the most recent meeting? Would I be able to find anything on the subject on the Crown Heights North Association’s website?

Stone Sources
Any owners/architects/builders out there that can recommend a stone supplier/fabricator OTHER than FORO? Have had nothing but trouble with Foro from poor install, fabrication, and templating, to unwillingness to deal fairly with the problems. Anyone out there that can handle high end work with more than an iota of customer service???

purchasing a building with no C of O due to it’s being built in 1910. after looking at the DOB website it seems that a letter of no objection would be just as good as having a C of O. anyone out there know the pros/cons to either?
