MulchFest 2012
In partnership with the Parks Department, the Fort Greene Park Conservancy, Fort Greene Association, and the Society for Clinton Hill is proud to host the fifth annual MulchFest. Join the volunteer team and have your holiday tree chipped for future use in your Park! Where: Washington Park and Willoughby. When: Jan 7 and 8. Time: 10a -2pm. Art Quilt Show at the Windsor Terrace Library
This quilt show is based on botanical Inspirations and features 22 botanic-themed quilts by members of The Quilters’ Guild of Brooklyn. All are 20×20 inches in size. The show runs Jan. 4 – Feb. 7, 2012. It includes two free workshops: (1) for adults at 6:30 pm on Wed., Jan. 18, and (2) for children ages 3-6 on Sat., Jan. 28, at 11 am. Chanukah Celebration at the Windsor Terrace Y
The Kings Bay Y at Windsor Terrace is pleased to invite the entire community to a cultural celebration of Chanukah. The event will take place on December 18th from 10 am-12 pm at 1224 Prospect Ave (on the corner of Vanderbilt) and will feature fun family activities including: a glow-in-the-dark dance party with live DJ, a drum circle, storytelling, sing-a-long, arts and crafts, raffles and other activities for families! Winter Fair 2011 at the Brooklyn Waldorf School

Solar One Speaks in Park Slope
Solar One, an environmental non-profit organization focusing on environmental education throughout the five boroughs, is hosting a press release TODAY at MS 88 in Park Slope at 10am to discuss our Green Design Lab program. The Green Design Lab is a comprehensive K-12 environmental education curriculum that Solar One has developed in partnership with the NYC Department of Education to educate students about the benefits of sustainability while reducing energy use in NYC school buildings. The press release on Friday will discuss the progress that the Green Design Lab Program has made since its pilot year in 2010, and our plans for expanding the program in the future. City Council Speaker Quinn, the Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, and David Bragdon, the Director of Mayor’s Office of Long Term Planning, will all be in attendance.

Santa on Flatbush Avenue
Santa is getting ready to head over to Flatbush Avenue on Saturday, December 10th. He is bringing candy canes for the children of the Prospect Heights and Park Slope neighborhood. For the parents, he will have our Shopping and Services Guide and our Discount Merchant Booklet to use during the holiday shopping season on Flatbush Avenue. Come on out, rain or snow, and see santa! He will be making his way up and down Flatbush Avenue from Park Place to Bergen Street from 12pm to 4pm!

Hannah Senesh Community Day School Art Fair
Community Art Fair this Sunday, December 11, 1:00-4:00pm Free of charge. Fun for the whole family! Flatbush Artists Studio Tour
Flatbush artists come to Park Slope, for the first two weekends in December only. The 9th Street Salon – 502 9th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues – will feature original, affordable art for the gift-giving season including painting, photography, prints, sculpture and jewelry. The Opening Gala takes place on Saturday, December 3rd, 4 to 8 pm. Meet the artists while enjoying light refreshments and live music by Feuerbrunner! The art exhibit will continue to be on view Sunday, December 4: 1- 6 pm.

Grace Church School Book & Toy Fair
One-Stop Shopping and Fun Activities for the Whole Family! Wide ranging selection of new & gently-used books and toys for children of all ages, as well as book readings, signings and a children’s sing-a-long. The event will also include a Toy Drive, and visitors to the fair are encouraged to purchase a new toy for a collection that will be distributed to underprivileged children throughout New York City. All sales at the Grace Church School Book & Toy Fair are tax free. Danish Christmas Fair
The Danish Seamen’s Church will hold its annual Christmas Fair this Saturday, November 19, from 11a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Church, 102 Willow Street (just south of Clark Street) and at Plymouth Church, Orange Street between Henry and Hicks, and on Sunday, November 20 from 11:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. at the Danish Seamen’s Church on Willow only.

Children’s Book Fair at the Brooklyn Museum

Project LeafDrop at Local Community Gardens
NYCLeaves is a volunteer-run, neighborhood-based coalition of community gardens, botanical gardens, greening groups, environmental organizations, City agencies and community partners dedicated to reducing the amount of useable organic material that currently ends up in our wastestream. Project LeafDrop gives New Yorkers the opportunity to move fallen leaves from the trash bin to the compost bin where it will be transformed into fertile “brown gold” for use in local greening projects. PLG Arts & PLGNA’s “Pop-Up”Group Show
Prospect Lefferts Gardens Neighborhood Association (PLGNA) and PLG Arts present The Neighborhood Show: Equal parts gallery, arts & crafts market, and performing arts venue and 100% Brooklyn, for two weeks. The Neighborhood Show will showcase artists living in Prospect Lefferts Gardens and surrounding Brooklyn communities with visual arts, music, spoken word, and crafts. The visual arts portion of this group show opens this Sunday at 552 Flatbush Avenue, at Maple Street. Smith Street “Festival des Soupes”
Smith’s Street’s Restaurant Row is once again dedicating an autumn afternoon to an homage to everything from minestrone to avgolemono, from lobster bisque to mulligatawney, from mondongo to pumpkin, from matzoh ball to gumbo. Red Hook Film Festival
The 2011 Red Hook Film Festival is coming up this weekend on October 15th and 16th! As usual, all of our screenings are free, we will have free popcorn and free Steve’s Key Lime Pies, and our Festival Party will be on Saturday evening at 6pm at Sunny’s Bar. Our 5th annual festival includes stories from Brooklyn and beyond, with films about barges, bike races, artists and students in Red Hook, and much more. The Red Hook Film Festival takes place at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition (BWAC) screening room, which is located inside a Civil War era warehouse at 499 Van Brunt Street on the waterfront of Red Hook, Brooklyn. Soundwaves: A Mural Under the BQE Dedication and Reception
Join us to celebrate and dedicate a community mural by artist Ellie Balk. This Sunday, 3:30pm, there will be a dedication, ribbon cutting and a piano performance. This will be held at the mural site, underneath the BQE at Park Avenue between Steuben and Grand. This is followed by a reception at 4:30pm at The Emerson, 561 Myrtle Avenue.

The ninth annual Open House New York weekend is happening on October 15th and 16th, and this morning the event’s website started accepting reservations. Some of the new Brooklyn sites include Greenpoint’s 6,000-square-foot Eagle Street Rooftop Farm; the Pratt Institute’s Myrtle Hall; and the Gowanus Canal Sponge Park. One of the “perennial favorites” in Brooklyn making a comeback this year is the Visitor Center & Nature Walk at Newtown Creek, pictured above. The Passport offers an OHNY participant and their guest front-of-the-line access to all sites and programs that do not require advance reservations.

Atlantic Antic
THE 37TH ANNUAL ATLANTIC ANTIC is an event not to be missed! On this beautiful autumn day in Brooklyn, the Atlantic Antic will bring together one million people to Atlantic Avenue to celebrate the longstanding tradition of food, festivities, and fun! Sunday, 12pm to 6pm, Atlantic from 4th Ave to Hicks Street.

The Kings County Tennis Jamboree
On October 1, 2011 the Kings County Tennis League (KCTL) will hold their Second Annual Bed-Stuy Open Tennis Jamboree in the Marcy Playground on the corner of Myrtle Ave. and Nostrand Ave. in Brooklyn. The Jamboree is completely free for youth and parents residing in Bedford Stuyvesant. Students from the organization’s two local teams, Marcy and Tompkins Tennis Clubs will also be completing in their new team jerseys. The event includes trophies, donated prizes, barbeque, and live music. There will also be a voter registration table and outreach by Black Life study. Over 60 youth are planned to participant along with 20 volunteers. More information may be found at marcytennisclub.org. Registration begins at 12:30. Jamboree runs from 1:00 – 3:00.

Early Literacy Storytime Program
For children 3 to 5 years and their parents or caregivers. In this special six session series, families will enjoy stories and activities to encourage the development of early literacy skills. Families will receive free books and other materials to continue the learning and fun at home. SATURDAYS October 1, 15, 22, 29 and November 5 AND SUNDAYS October 2, 16, 23, 30 and November 6. The Dumbo Arts Festival
The Dumbo Arts Festival is taking place all this weekend. Hours run 6-9 p.m. Friday, 12-8 p.m. Saturday, and 12-6 p.m. on Sunday for most exhibits. This photo is of the festival’s AT&T-sponsored lounge at 56 Water Street being painted; among other things, the lounge will have products featuring an interactive festival map. One of the many exhibits of note at the festival is The Dumpster Project, which will premiere tonight, September 23, 2011. Here’s the word on it: “The Dumpster Project is a work of transportable public art. The Dumpster Project is also a daily blog. Fundamentally, though, The Dumpster Project is a physical taxonomy of one man’s existence. A visitor to the installation will walk into a modern-day “cabinet of curiosities”, where objects of nostalgia (i.e. a Yankees cap Mac wore through most of the 1990s) have a place beside items culled from international travels (i.e. the curiously named ‘Long Life’ brand of cigarettes from Hong Kong). Each object will be numbered, and a mobile application will enable the viewer to use his or her smart phone to access a eulogy Mac has written for each item, as well as a studio photograph of the object set cleanly against a white background.” More info here.

Strongman at the Brooklyn Heights Cinema
Brooklyn Heights Cinema is going to do a week long run of STRONGMAN, starting Friday, September 23rd and going to Thursday, September 29th. The filmmaker will be doing Q & A’s after the 7pm shows on Friday the 23rd, Saturday the 24th, and on Sunday the 25th as well. Stan will appear in person on opening night after the 7pm show as well and will attempt his signature penny-bending feat. A trailer for the movie is here.

Annual Coney Island Beard and Moustache Competition
Burly beards and manicured moustaches flock to Coney Island for Donny Vomit’s 4th Annual Coney Island Beard and Moustache Competition. In true Coney Island fashion this event celebrates the amazing and the absurd as contestants compete for Trophy Fez’s categories such as Moustache/Beard Natural and Styled, Best Fake beard, and for those not naturally gifted with the fuzz–Worst in Show (for the tackiest and tasteless presentation). Adding to the nights festivities will be DJ Mike Harr will be spinning music from the 20’s and 30’s on his vintage victrolas. Strait Razor demonstrations some fabulous sideshow performances. Sunday’s at Sunny’s
After a summer hiatus, we’re back this Sunday, September 11 at 3 p.m. at Sunny’s bar, 253 Conover Street in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The reading will feature novelist Megan Abbott, author of The End of Everything; memoirist Michele Carlo, author of Fish Out of Agua: My Life on Neither Side of the (Subway) Tracks; and novelist Kio Stark, author of Follow Me Down. Admission is $5, which includes Italian pastries from Court Pastry Shop and free coffee. The bar phone number is 718-625-8211. BookCourt bookstore cosponsors and the authors will sign books at the reading.

Michael Schall Solo Show
The opening of Michael Schall’s show at Pierogi this Friday night from 7-9pm. The artist will be exhibiting a bunch of new drawings in the front room, and the back room will be showing some great etchings by Tony Fitzpatrick. Click here to read the press release and preview of some of the work.

Weekend Family Programs for Labor Day

2nd Annual Union-Nostrand Street Festival
This year we’re doing it again! The Second Annual ‘Union-Nostrand Street Festival’ will take place onSaturday, August 27th, 2011 at 12 NOON. Last year the Office of New York State Assemblyman Karim Camara in partnership with City of Hope Economic Development Corp. hosted a successful festival in the 43rd Assembly District . This year will be no different! The Union-Nostrand festival will also feature a fashion show, live musical performances, free food and rides for the children.
