Crown Heights Reno
« and let the drawing begin progress!!! »
March 9, 2007
we are back! :D
(or... omg, we totally lost february)
the past 2 months have been spent
gathering ideas,
drawing plans,
revising ideas
and attending to some personal stuff that was in the way.
but the bid packages went out this week,
(happiness)
and we have been doing a bit of exploratory demo
so it's time to jump back in here;
i'll start with something small & pretty: the living room ceiling
you might remember the dining room ceiling from the previous post:

we were hopeful at first, but it's clearly beyond repair; over ½ of it is down
but we have uncovered 80% of the living room

and except for a patch about 3' x 5'
we seem to be in pretty good shape

so my question is...
who knows a good person for restoring decorative plaster
and how big a job is this (assuming that the whole thing isn't going to get shaken loose by the rough work above)?

The good news: Hoo boy! What a stunning detail!!
The bad news: Unless you get *incredibly* lucky, it's going to cost a right mint to pay someone to restore that stuff. The only crew I know who's truly trustworthy and capable is Mark Uriu's. Be forewarned, he recently did Oprah's office. Not kidding. He's not cheap.

Wow..that is gorgeous.
No clue what it will cost you to repair it but if its a 3x5 spot, maybe you can just put a big painting up until you find the right craftsman?
(only partially kidding)

we are starting to have contractors come in and look at the job and the general conensus seems to be that we will
1. try to stabilize the decorative corners to withstand the construction trauma
2. lose the mid section details (since one side is completely damaged)
3. continue the border all the way around
4. replace the medallion (which is also off the lathe)
@Mrs. L: the plaster work is all on the ceiling

try Fitzroy at Absolute Plaster 917-412-5593. He's really reasonable and reliable.

for paint/plaster work, I have had good experiences with Dean Pena (212 935 5747). He's a sole proprietor, cares about his work and will do an A-rated job. My firm contracted to him regularly, and I went to work for him off-and-on. His heart's in the right place and he got skeelz..
