fluff 'n fold
laundry

background:
i admit it, i am spoiled in this area
and i am so over the laundromat
2 more appliances that i haven't had to buy in eons...
so some of the finer improvements are probably lost on me
requirements
water/energy efficient
front loading for both washer & dryer (we will be using them side by side)
durable
large load
i put EVERYTHING in the washer
i use lots of garment bags
wash in cold water
and hang stuff up
i need a delicate cycle but i am not a nut about this
i want something that will last and that i don't feel too terrible about running
as far as drying goes...
again efficiency is more important than a myriad of cycles that i will never use

Check gardenweb.com for lots of opinions.
I went with miele, due in part to space requirements. Other clients of mine have liked the Bosch units. Other clients have gotten the monster LG or Maytag units: in that case, be sure there is enough support to take those loads.
Many front loaders need to be balanced properly or they "walk" during the spin cycle. Others have unusual electrical requirements. As you might know, some dryers can be gas too.
Good luck.

Purchased the LG front loading washer/dryer recently with the steam fresh option (which I have yet to use). Electric washer/gas dryer. Both of them are great. Both are so quiet that I have to look twice to see if they are running. I can do laundry for the family in just 3-4 loads and can program for more or less time if necessary. Best part is I've pre-programed with simple wash cycles so the kids can toss in their own laundry and do it. A little more expensive but definitely worth it.
Only thing to remember is that NYC requires gas appliances be installed by a licensed plumber, so the delivery guys will just drop off and not do installation for you.
