Children’s Book Fair
The Brooklyn Museum presents the third annual Children’s Book Fair, with more than 30 Brooklyn authors and illustrators. The fair features storybooks, picture books, and graphic novels and will include author readings, a game for children, and café service. Sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings. Thanksgiving Wine Tasting

Psychedelic Shamanism: Tripping with Caveh
“Dropping” acid in high school or eating Mushrooms in college is still an American rite of passage, but few filmmakers have made the hallucinogenic experience an integral part of their work. Caveh Zahedi has spent the past 20 years exploring the spiritually transformative potential of psychoactive drugs and documenting these explorations in his autobiographical films. He has even made a TV pilot, Tripping with Caveh ( inspired by John Lurie’s Fishing with John series) with Will Oldham playing Dante to Caveh’s mushroom-addled Virgil. "Surviving the Economic Downturn in Cobble Hill"
Due to New York City's unemployment rate at a reported 8.9% and with under-employment estimated at 17%, many Cobble Hill residents have been affected by the economic downturn, especially with so many working in the fields of finance, media, and law that have been hard-hit. The Cobble Hill Association's Fall meeting will feature a panel discussion on coping strategies for this difficult economic environment. Cobble Hill Bike Ride
The Cobble Hill Association and Brooklyn Greenway Initiative are hosting a 10-mile casual bike ride that will start at Cobble Hill Park and pass through Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo, the Columbia Waterfront District, Red Hook, and Carroll Gardens then loop back to Cobble Hill. The Dogs of Brooklyn
The Dogs of Brooklyn is Susie DeFord's fresh poetic narrative about her colorful life as a dogwalker accompanied by vibrant photos of Brooklyn and the dogs by Dennis Riley. Climate Change: Picturing the Science
Join editors Gavin Schmidt and Joshua Wolfe, and author Frank Zeman at the Community Bookstore to celebrate their book, Climate Change: Picturing the Science. Schmidt and Wolfe address a host of observable changes, from the melting of ice and permafrost at the poles to the rising of sea levels in cities such as Venice and Miami in their book. From discussions of increasing drought, forest fires, and extreme storms to the deadly buildup of industrial and agriculture chemicals, the coverage is clear. Fixing School Food Event
At the community level, what role can parents, schools and elected officials play to help insure fresh, healthy food for all children as a regular part of their school day? To answer this question and become more aware of school food issues, the Bay Ridge Food Coop invites you to a presentation by Professor Jan Poppendieck, the author of the forthcoming book Free for All: Fixing School Food in America. Raise the Roof Benefit

Downtown Brooklyn Hoedown

Skate Park Fundraiser
Teens and young adults are in need of a place of their own. The Friends Of Douglass/Greene Park want to make a skate park to give the aforementioned just that. Join the neighborhood and help made a skate park, picnic area, and playground for the community. The suggested donation is only ten bucks which includes food, drink, music, and a surprise raffle and silent auction. The items auctioned are donated from local shops, restaurants and artists. The New Yorker Festival
Enjoy two days worth of music and talks by bands such as Dirty Projectors, House of Ladosha, Jubilee, Liturgy, and Loudon Wainwright III. A portion of the ticket proceeds from this festival will be donated to Harlem Children’s Zone, which offers a holistic network of education, social services, and community-building programs to children and families in Harlem. Brooklyn Skillshare
The Brooklyn Skillshare is a community-based, community-led, and community-building learning event organized and taught by Brooklyn residents. Classes for the October 10th Brooklyn Skillshare include: Kombucha brewing, bike mechanics 101, screenprinting, DIY electronic audio, cooking with raw food, burlesque, and many, many more. Angels and Accordions
This unique event, choreographed by Martha Bowers of Dance Theatre Etcetera, features a cast of 30 dancers, original music by Guy Klucevsek and Bob Goldberg (played live by a band of accordionists), singing, and a visual installation inside the Catacombs designed by photographer Alexander Heilner. Fort Greene Park Conservancy Portfolio Wine Tasting Fundraiser

35th Annual Atlantic Antic Street Festival

Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival
This weekend Dumbo will be transformed into a neighborhood-wide art show, with galleries, studios, and storefronts devoted to art-related happenings; even neighborhood landmarks and fixtures will be transformed into temporary art projects. This is the 13th year that the festival has taken place in Dumbo; you can see a slide show of last year's event here. The festival kicks off this morning and runs through Sunday, which means you could combine an art walk with a visit to The Flea on Sunday. For more information check out the festival's website.
Greenpoint Open Studios
Artist studios, bands, and afterparties in Greenpoint!!! There will be video screenings and dance performances, as well. All are welcome to enjoy this weekend's three day open studio event. Friday - Sunday, September 25 - 27. Use link above for scheduled times and events.

The Brooklyn Flea takes place in Ft. Greene on Saturday and its historic Brooklyn Bridge location on Sunday. Both locations feature a great mix of vintage, antiques, jewelry, and food. Saturday, September 26. 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, Lafayette Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues. Big Movies for Little Kids
The season premiere of Big Movies for Little Kids starts Monday. Modern Times, a Charlie Chaplin film, will be the first of many screenings at Cobble Hill Cinemas. Every other Monday, during the school year, a film is screened. The movies chosen are appropriate for kids that are older than two. To purchase tickets ahead of time, you can go to the Cobble Hill Cinemas site. Monday, September 21. 4 p.m. 265 Court Street, Cobble Hill Cinemas.
A Taste of Red Hook
All of the proceeds from the evening will go to the Red Hook Initiative (RHI) , a community-based organization that is run by more than 50 residents of the Red Hook Houses who are working to create their own social change. Tickets are $100 which includes a sampling of signature dishes from several amazing Red Hook restaurants such as The Good Fork, Baked, Kevin’s, Brooklyn Botanica, Home/Made, Hope & Anchor, Defontes, Fort Defiance, and Fernando Martinez, a neighborhood favorite vendor from the Red Hook soccer fields. PARK(ing) Day 2009
Since 2006, when Rebar created PARK(ing) Day in San Francisco, it has grown to encompass other cities around the world to join in and convert their own metered parking spaces into a temporary public park. This will be the third year the event's taken place in New York and there are 51 official spaces slated for takeover. One of the hot spots in Brooklyn will be at the corner of Cortelyou and Argyle Roads. If you see a "public park" spring up, feel free to play and interact! And to send us photos. Friday, September 18. This event is all day and located around all of Brooklyn.
International Coastal Cleanup Day
This is the 24th Coastal Cleanup Day and it is a worldwide effort to clean up and better the coasts of many countries. The trash found will be tallied and the information will be used to understand the impact of trash on waterways. To RSVP for the event, email rsvp@bbpc.net. ESDC 2nd Informational Meeting
The Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC) will be holding its second informational meeting for the Atlantic Yards. This meeting's main topic will be focused on the new arena design for the Barclays Center. Unfortunately, any public issues brought up during this meeting can't be brought up before the ESDC board meets on September 17. The Center for Architecture will moderate the discussion with arena designers Ellerbe Becket and SHoP Architects. All are welcome to attend. 2nd ANNUAL SUMMER @ SONYA Art exhibition
South Of the Navy Yard Artists (SONYA), is presenting an art exhibition that includes more than thirty-five works in painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography by twenty-one emerging and established artists who are current members of SONYA. This Thursday is the opening reception and is open to the public until October 8th. Opening for "Brace For Impact: the Aftermath of Flight 1549"
The Front Room is pleased to introduce Stephen Mallon's large-scale photography of the crash of flight 1549. Never before has a commercial aircraft crashed in the Hudson with the complete survival of all passengers and crew. Mallon's photography of the disaster shows the unbeatable odds that the pilot and crew overcame. The reception is on Saturday, but the gallery is open on Friday - Sunday 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. until October 11. Saturday, September 12. 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. 147 Roebling Street, The Front Room.
Brooklyn Book Festival
Are you crazy about books and readings? This festival is for you. Midweek Movies in Columbus Park
This screening of The Fifth Element is not only a free showing, there will also be live music before the film. The music will be performed by Trashed On Fiction and Air Waves. Meter Rates Meeting at Park Slope Methodist Church
The Department of Transportation (DOT) is aiming to increase their parking meters again. Last May, DOT increased the meters from .75 cents per hour to $1.50. Parking has increased, which was DOT's main objective, yet now they aim to increase parking meters once again to $3 an hour. Come to the meeting and voice your comments and concerns. Brooklyn’s 36th Council District Debate
This debate, hosted by Crown Heights Revitalization Movement (CHRM) and Crown Heights North Association (CHNA), will be moderated by Errol Louis (New York Daily News Columnist/ Editorial Board Member). Louis will present all of the candidates with questions ranging from educational issues to community unity. The candidates are: Hon. Albert Vann (incumbent), William Carrington, Robert E. The Coney Island Rockabilly Festival
If you like any of these three things: Psychobilly, Burlesque, or Sideshow Acts, then Coney Island is the place for you this Labor Day weekend.
