Closing Bell: An Awning for Galapagos

The march towards a Galapagos Dumbo relaunch continues this week with the installation of an awning. Anyone know when this place is scheduled to open?

Closing Bell: Where's the Beef on Court?

Racked has been diligently documenting the action—or lack thereof—in the future Trader Joe's space on Atlantic and Court. A worker says the store is “at least a couple months” from opening, and as the pic above shows, the grocery does not seem to be making big strides, construction-wise. A few blocks north on the corner of State, the space that's supposed to become a Boar's Head superstore is marked by a similar glacial pace of progress. Where are the cold cuts and fancy tortilla chips we've been promised, goddammit?

Closing Bell: On the Waterfront
The photos above are part of a project by Bettina Johae called "Borough Edges." Johae's work includes hundreds of photos of the perimeters of all five boroughs. The artist took the pictures from 2004 and 2007 during bike rides, and some of them are included in an exhibit at the NYPL's Humanities and Social Services Library in Midtown called "Eminent Domain: Contemporary Photography and the City." You can see all the photos here. There are 347 of Brooklyn alone.

Closing Bell: Batten Down the Hatches

The rainy, windy weather over the weekend apparently took a toll on some trees around town. A reader shot the Carroll Gardens photo at Henry and President on Saturday, and another sent in pics of the damage on Washington Avenue between Dekalb and Willoughby. Other folks notice felled trees? (We didn't.)

Closing Bell: BITV Looks at Development Blogging
Brooklyn Independent Television takes a look at blogs that focus on development issues. Our own Third & Bond feature takes center stage. (That's the back of David Kramer's head you're looking at in the opening frame.) The segment is part of the Brooklyn Review show, which airs Thursday, May 15 at 1pm & 9pm and Friday, May 16 at 3pm & 11pm on Time Warner 56/Cablevison 69.

Closing Bell: Ratner, Gehry, Pool Barge Win Awards

The Municipal Art Society announced last week the winners of its seventh annual MASterwork Awards, and three Brooklyn heavy hitters made the list. Renzo Piano's New York Times building, built by Forest City Ratner, and Frank Gehry's IAC Building won for best buildings. While both buildings are in Manhattan, Ratner is the developer of the controversial Atlantic Yards area and high-rise megaproject and that place where there's a Target, and Atlantic Yards is designed by Frank Gehry. The Floating Pool lady, moored at the future Brooklyn Bridge Park last summer (and now in the Bronx), won for best neighborhood catalyst along with The New Museum. Diane von Furstenberg's DVF Studio Headquarters in the Meatpacking District and the Museum at Eldridge Street won for best historic renovation.

Closing Bell: Third Annual Blogfest Tonight
At 8 p.m. tonight the third annual Brooklyn Blogfest is going to be held at the Brooklyn Lyceum (4th Avenue and Union). The event, which was put together by Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn, is going to include speakers from Gowanus Lounge, Bed-Stuy Blog, New York Shitty and many others. (Brownstoner didn't make the cut.) The suggested donation is $10. Bloggers and non-bloggers alike are welcome. The event was quite crowded last year, so it's a good idea to show up early.

Closing Bell: Inflation at Nathan's
For the working man's playground, Coney Island's most well-known hot dog sure is getting expensive. A poster on Coney Island USA's message board noticed last weekend hot dogs at Nathan's Famous now cost $3.20 including tax, a 9.2 percent increase over last year. That's $1.20 more than the typical Manhattan water dog (or $0.70 more if you're a tourist). Maybe it's the rising cost of beef casing? The poster, who calls himself Outlaw, commented, "I do feel sorry for the family of four that stops at Nathan's before or after a day at the beach because it's going to cost them an 'arm and a leg' to enjoy a decent meal there now." Indeed five hot dogs (two for dad) and four tickets to the Wonder Wheel is already a $40 day at the beach, and that doesn't include fries, drinks, toppings or a round at Shoot the Freak. Fortunately, Nathan's website provides a printable coupon that'll get you two dogs for the price of one.

Closing Bell: Feast at the Navy Yard
A reader sent in the photo above from last night's Brooklyn Eats, which was held at Steiner Studios in the Navy Yard. The tasting event featured chow from around 30 restaurants. Yum.
