Closing Bell: Flea Fun In The Fall Sun

fort-greene-flea-1109.jpg
Phew. It's been a rough few weeks of dodgy weather (and weather reports) but it's finally looking like we have back-to-back dry days coming up this weekend. With the hard part out of the way, we can just step back and let The Flea vendors do their thing! Joining the usual cast of characters this weekend are the folks behind Atlantis in Red Hook, an online purveyor of curiosities, a vinyl-head known as the Record Grouch, an antiques dealer from the Chelsea Garage and a new Red Hook Food Vendor serving up arepas and chuzos. All good, baby. All good. The Brooklyn Flea is held on Saturdays from 10 to 5 at the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene (176 Lafayette Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues; take the C or G trains to Clinton-Washington) and on Sundays from 11-6 in Dumbo underneath the Brooklyn Bridge at the corner of Water and New Dock Street. Map and directions here.

Closing Bell: Flea A.M. (After Martha)

bridge-flea-103009.jpg
To say that vendors were energized by Martha's visit last Sunday would be an understatement, so there's lots of momentum and enthusiasm heading into this weekend. In addition to all the usual flea market-y goodness, there are several cool new vendors making their Flea debuts: Tomorrow in Fort Greene, we can't wait to check out Brooklyn Slate, which makes cheeseboards, sushi platters and the like out of slate sourced from Upstate New York. And on Sunday we'll be making a bee line to check out the two new furniture makers before heading over to dive into the huge collection of a new record dealer. For more new vendors, click here. If you're coming early, don't forget to check out the scavenger hunt items on the Flea Blog. Martha Does The Flea

After the weather caused her to postpone her visit by a day, Martha Stewart brought her film crew, her niece and her french bulldogs to The Brooklyn Flea underneath the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday for a one-hour show she's putting together on Brooklyn and its food scene. She started things off interviewing the Flea founding team (above) and then set off to sample the market's culinary delights. (Brokelyn has a nice round-up here.) The show is tentatively set to air on November 10, but we'll keep you posted. The combination of the weather and the Martha buzz made it by far the most successful day that vendors have had all year, which is great news. Thanks to everyone who came out!

Lights, Camera, Action...

Biggest day ever at The Flea today? Just possibly. See you under the bridge.

Closing Bell: Win Some, Lose Some

bridge-flea-102309.jpg
Fort Greene can't seem to catch a break in the weather department: Tomorrow's looking like another crap day but hopefully we'll get a few hours of dry weather in. Sunday, however, is looking like prime Flea weather so we're gearing up for the most over-subsribed Flea under the Brooklyn Bridge ever. (This has something to do with the fact that She Who Shall Not Be Named has shifted her appearance from Saturday to Sunday as a result of the forecast.) Anyway, there will be more merch and food than ever under the bridge, so come check it out. Now that's Living! Ho! Ho! Ho! The Flea Takes Manhattan (For a Month)

flea-gifted-1009.jpg
Remember the one-day-a-week holiday market we threw last December at the Masonic Temple? Well, we're gonna take it up a notch (or two) this year. For the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas, The Brooklyn Flea will be hosting its Gifted Holiday Market in one of the old Tower Records spaces at the corner of Lafayette and East 4th Street in Manhattan. (We tried to get our hands on every large space in Downtown Brooklyn but couldn't find a single spot that worked.) Our friends at >Lucky Magazine will also be curating a portion of the event with a rotating cast of their favorite fashion and jewelry designers. The month-long stand will run from November 27 to December 24, with only Mondays and Tuesdays off (except for the final week when we'll be open every day). We're about 80 percent booked with vendors from the existing Flea family already, but we've purposefully saved slots for some fresh faces, so if you know anyone who might be a good candidate, please have them shoot an email to brooklynflea@gmail.com with "Gifted Vendor" as the subject. We'll have more information about vendors, dj's and Wednesday night after-work parties as we get a little closer to kick-off.

Closing Bell: Rain, Rain, Go Away

flea-101609b.jpg
We'll admit that it's not looking like ideal flea market weather this weekend, but you never know: It was supposed to rain today and never did. Anyway, we're a rain-or-shine market, so we'll remain optimistic til the end. As usual, we've got scavenger hunt items for the finding, and we're loving all the press The Flea got over the past week, including top billing on the Lonely Planet website today. Over on the Flea Blog, we were surprised to learn of this guy who's lived a block from Bishop Loughlin since the Flea began and only visited for his first time last weekend.

Closing Bell: Columbus Was Really Into Flea Markets

flea-100909.jpg
design-coop-100909.jpgWell, that might be a stretch. But if he were to dock at Fulton Ferry Landing this Sunday, he'd have a hard time not visiting The Flea under the Brooklyn Bridge, picking up some jewely for Mrs. C, a little deck furniture for the Santa Maria and perhaps a few lobster rolls or pupusas for the crew. He might not be able to see Saturday's Flea in Fort Greene from the poop deck, but he could always just hop on the C Train. In addition to some new mid-century dealers (and others—see the full list here), the big news at The Flea is the inaugural weekend of the new Design Co-op in Fort Greene. Featuring such hot-shot designers as Lena Corwin, Lotta Jansdotter and Moontree Letterpress (among others) and housed under one large tent, the Co-op should be a real treat!

Closing Bell: Shoptober at The Flea

flea-100209.jpg
We're psyched for a bunch of new vendors this weekend at The Flea. In particular: A vintage psychedelic poster seller, a Russell Wright specialist and a high-end rug dealer offering some of his stock at Flea-friendly prices. Oh, and the Red Hook Lobster Pound will be debuting its lobster bisque this weekend as well. As always, if you get there early you have a shot at winning the scavenger hunt; this week's items viewable here. Closing Bell: Flea Under a Good Sein

flea-092509.jpg
Have you heard? Seinfeld's coming to The Flea tomorrow. Well, not Seinfeld the man (though it's not impossible) but Seinfeld the show. Jerry's got a new reality show in the works and they're doing a casting call at The Flea in Fort Greene tomorrow. They're looking for couples that want to air their disputes in front of celebrity judges. Hey, it's cheaper than marriage counseling! On the non-celebrity front, there's plenty of new stuff to check out, including a woman who makes quilted maps of places like Fort Greene, a former 80s -nightclub-manager-turned-Sullivan-County-vintage-dealer and the latest member of the Flea flock to take refuge from the Chelsea Garage, Blue Jet Toys. Get there early and maybe you'll be able to snag one of the Scavenger Hunt items up for grabs this week.

Closing Bell: Best Flea of the Year?

flea-091809.jpg
This could be the best Flea weekend of the year. Everyone's back in town from the summer, we're looking at two days of sunshine and we're at 100% vendor capacity. Of special note, we'll have a new Chelsea antiques vendor on the scene as well as a new seller of Danish modern housewares; for Brooklynites looking to keep it real, there'll also be a new vendor selling photos on 1970s subway graffiti. For a more in-depth look at what's new this weekend click here. If you're going to be arriving on the early side at either market, check out this week's Scavenger Hunt items in advance and maybe you can walk away with some free stuff. A Look Back at Yesterday's Record Fair

For those of you who didn't make it out to yesterday's record and vintage fashion fair hosted by the Brooklyn Flea under the Manhattan Bridge in Dumbo, here's a taste of what you missed. You can also take a look at what one blogger picked up at the fair.

Closing Bell: For Fleasters About To Rock

record-fair-flea-091309.jpg
The line-up's a little different this weekend. Saturday is business as usual in Fort Greene but because of special Harbor Day activities The Flea will not be taking place in its regular location underneath the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday. Instead, we're putting on a special record fair and vintage fashion bazaar in the arch underneath the Manhattan Bridge. There will be 35 or so record dealers and about 20 vintage vendors. Check out more details on the Flea Blog. While you're there, you can read about this weekend's scavenger hunt items and some of the new vendors on tap for tomorrow.

Closing Bell: Fair Weather Flea

flea-090509.jpg
After last Saturday's washout, we're digging the weather report for both days this weekend. In addition to the sunshine, come early and be the first to find this straw hat, this week's scavenger item. Over on the Flea Blog, you can also find a list of some of the new vendors making their debuts this weekend. Any bets on whether Doogie Howser will make an encore appearance underneath the bridge on Sunday? Enjoy! The Brooklyn Flea is held on Saturdays from 10 to 5 at the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene (176 Lafayette Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues; take the C train to Clinton-Washington or the G train to Clinton Avenue) and on Sundays from 11-6 in Dumbo underneath the Brooklyn Bridge at the corner of Water and New Dock Street.

Closing Bell: Flea or Shine

flea-rain-0809.jpg
We can't say we're too pleased with Mother Nature these days: August has been a tough one for planners of outdoor weekend events! Luckily our vendors are hearty souls by and large so even if some rain comes our way there should still be plenty of stalwarts holding down the fort this weekend at both fleas.

Closing Bell: It's Alright to Flea

flea-chairs-0809.jpg
Since when has a hurricane been a reason not to go flea marketing! We've got some strong new antiques vendors on tap as well as the debut of sweet cream corn popsicles. A great way to beat the heat.

Closing Bell: Come On And Take a Flea Ride

flea-080709.jpg
This weekend's shaping up to be a good one, with lots of new vendors coming your way. In Fort Greene, we've got new folks selling everything from vintage eyewear to Peewee Herman dolls. And under the bridge, longtime Flea jewelry vendor Mollie Dash will be debuting an expanded line of curated handmade goods under her new business name Everbrite Mercantile Co. Closing Bell: The Flea Days of Summer

flea-record-shopping-0709.jpg
It's looking like tomorrow should be another nice day for The Flea in Fort Greene; as for Sunday under the Brooklyn Bridge, we've had good luck dodging the weather bullets recently, so let's hope it continues! There are seven or eight exciting new vendors starting this weekend, so watch the Flea blog later today for a post with details.

Closing Bell: Flea Freshness

fort-greene-flea-072409.jpg
Hopefully Mother Nature will continue its Flea-friendly ways this weekend cuz there's lots of new stuff coming down the pipe. In addition to a new face painting booth for kids, Fort Greene debuts include Big Tree Farms and 2ndsouls; next day under the bridge, Armoire Furnishings shows off its furniture made from reclaimed wood. For more details on these newbies, check out the What's New post on the Flea Blog; while you're at it, eyeball this week's Scavenger Hunt items.

Speaking of food, there was a good recap of all the press the Flea's food vendors have been getting on the Flea Blog earlier this week. As for matters non-culinary, we're geting psyched to check out the new antiques dealers that are starting out this weekend in both locations. Flea Blog. Municipal Art Society Honors The Brooklyn Flea

Brooklyn-Flea-Award-0709.jpgEarlier this week we shlepped into Manhattan along with Fleamaster Eric Demby for the Municipal Art Society's annual awards ceremony, held this year at the Chelsea Art Museum on 22nd Street. We were honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the planning and preservation group for the Brooklyn Flea's "exceptional contribution to the life of New York City." More specifically, The Flea got props for "providing an alternative to big-box retail that embodies a private sector spirit while yielding generous public benefits."

There's more food action at The Flea this weekend. This week in Fort Greene, Gerald Jerky brings its grassfed beef jerky to the Flea masses.
