McCarren Tennis Court Get Full Makeover

mccarren-new-court-072810.jpg
Incredible news for Brooklyn tennis players: Ten weeks after a group of regulars at the McCarren Park tennis courts got together to finance and resurface one of the long-neglected courts, American Express has stepped up to redo the other six! "As part of the Fresh Courts program, the remaining courts will be completely resurfaced and renovated, and upon project completion, McCarren Park will contain six full-sized, 78-foot courts, and two permanent 36-foot courts for the QuickStart play format," says the press release. Congrats to the McCarren Tennis non-profit that got this done.

Does AmEx get to put their name or logo on the courts?

I think I still have my Bjorn Borg wooden racket -- is that ironic enough to play here? (I'm not that old, I just liked playing with it in high school....)

You might want to wear Borg-style tight shorts just to be sure.

real nyc people dont play tennis. the amount of public space wasted on SIX courts is absurd. why not put up two basketball courts? ooh um, that's right :-/

Umm... Rob, plenty of "real" NYC people play tennis. The courts I see are always being used, year-round. And to read into your last comment.... yes, plenty of black people too. Not everyone has to play their stereotype sport.

What about the lawn bowling courts? Are those not "real" NYC people? Those take up a lot of public space too! What about baseball/softball fields? Those are HUGE. Oh, man, and the soccer pitches.... just packed with people who aren't "real" NYC people. Those are almost as big as baseball fields.

What do you suggest? Just basketball and maybe handball? Are those compact and "real" enough for you?

Real NYC people? Did they make you their spokesperson? You're from Jersey!!

Hey Rob.

Check this out: http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&q=brooklyn&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Brooklyn,+Kings,+New+York&gl=us&ei=wBpPTMa0HYPjnAe99dmACA&ved=0CCkQ8gEwAA&ll=40.721506,-73.954747&spn=0.0015,0.002256&t=h&z=19

See those tennis courts? See those small dots on them? That's every court in use.

See that huge empty blacktop lot next to the courts? Those are two softball diamonds and a bunch of basketball hoops. Those small dots you don't see on them are the people who aren't using them.

Thank you, thank you very much.

Rob,

Go look at the google satellite view of the tennis courts at McCarren. See all those little dots on them? Those are people using every court. See that huge blacktop area next to the courts? Those are two softball diamonds and a bunch of basketball hoops. The little dots you don't see are the people who aren't using them.

Of course that isn't to say the softball diamonds and basketball hoops shouldn't be there - they should. But for you to say tennis courts are a waste of space is just silly.

Well done, indeed. Nice to see these renovated.

Rob you're an idiot. People that say only hipsters live in Williamsburg and play tennis have obviously never spent any time here. "REAL" new yorkers play tennis.
I agree, you must be from Jersey.

I remember the good old day of playing tennis at McCarren Park...

- no lock on the gate
- noone checked permits - once you were on the court, it was your for however long you wanted it!
- no nets either!! I still have mine in a bag somewhere.
- cracks in the cement wide enough to change the directon of the ball when it hit it just so!

Such fond memories.

Kinda like how the people who live on South Elliott Place are more "real" than those who live on South Portland?

By EnglishKills on July 29, 2010 1:14 PM

Growing up in queens we all played tennis. Last time I checked we were part of NYC. Rob obvs wouldn't understand since he's an unemployed hipster transplant and not from around here.
