More Bagels For 7th Avenue
Close to a year ago, Park Slope Farm opened up at 106 7th Avenue, much to the glee of nearby residents who were in need of a convenient and well-stocked bodega. Seems like things didn't go as planned though: It's already closed and boarded up, and although there are no signs out yet, the work order notice tells us the place is being remodeled into another bagel cafe. Pretty stiff competition, with the La Bagel Delight and the Bagel Hole further down 7th, don't you think? GMAP

The shop it's replacing had nothing going for it - fruit & vege weren't as good as other vendors' & the miscellany was a poor, too-p.c. selection: earth chips but no Cheetohs, for instance. Prices were also high.

Bagel hole has the best bagels in the entire city. Yes better than essa and h&h. What they serve at La Bagel shouldn't even be called a bagel.

bagel hole is on 7th right? is that the one with the smallish hard good old school bagels? (read about that somewhere..) im not fan of the doughey bread like tasting bagels..

Bagel Hole might have the best bagels in the universe, but it is still over 15 blocks away. As long as this place is any good, it will put La Bagel Delight out of business and do very well. I'm looking forward to it.

bagel hole, is easy winner. worth schlepping 15 blocks. everything else is just round bread.

Bergen Bagels suits me fine.

Bagel Hole is so far away, its probably not even in the consideration set of anyone living from 7th street on down, which is the bulk of P.S. I love my bagels but wouldnt dream of walking that for one unless it had some added magical benefits. Oh, and this Park Slope Farm was NOT a bodega. It was just weird feeling (coffee good though), and when they started selling Korean hot-dogs and boba tea or something on the sidewalk, it just felt weirder.

Evidently the proprietors didn't get the memo instructing them to open a Banh Mi shop.

La Bagel Delight itself is about 10 blocks away from here (as is Bergen Bagels in the other direction); seems there'd be room for each. I agree that Bagel Hole blows all others away (and Terrace Bagels a close second), but I'll often go to La Bagel anyway because it's closer.
The (very bad) Bagel World opened at 5th Ave and 4th a few years ago, and it seems to be doing fine, while not (as far as I can see) cutting into La Bagel.

Bagel Hole fails immediately because "They Don't Toast" their bagels. What's With That?
By fsrg on March 10, 2010 1:10 PM
Actually La Bagel delight is one block away (they have 2 locations on 7th) and that will be their main competition. Bagel Hole and Bergen Bagel arent any where near here - newsflash 15 blocks is a different neighborhood despite the best efforts of RE brokers to make Park Slope 100sq blocks.

fsrq--totally forgot about the other La Bagel branch! Which I guess just further shows how irrelevant Bagel Hole is to this, however good their bagels are.
Still not convinced that there's not room for this place and La Bagel. Seems to me that bagel shops like this make a big chunk of their money as basically sandwich shops, so the real question might be how much deli and lunch-place competition is nearby.
By antidope on March 10, 2010 1:43 PM
if i lived closer, i'd eat a bagel hole bagel everyday and gain 30 pounds so i'm glad it's in south slope. but that doesn't change the discussion, the other shops are not purveyors of bagels but rather disguised sandwich shops. period.

I drive to Bagel Hole from Bed Stuy when I want a real bagel. That's how good it is.
The problem with ALL bagel places is that they don't serve good coffee! A good bagel plus a decent cup of coffee...now that would be something to compete with!
By antidope on March 10, 2010 2:44 PM
right on, rh. however, i recommend the bike to bagel hole. and coffee somewhere, anywhere else. gorrilla coffee on 5th is good if you like low viscosity fuel like me.

living where i do, i'm absolutely thrilled by the prospect of having to decide whether i turn left and walk half-a-block to get a bagle, or turn right and walk half a block to get a bagel.
that said, what other street in the slope.. in the city.. anywhere for that matter.. can claim what president street can:
-- 2-banks
-- 2-churches
-- 2-schools
and now maybe:
-- 2-bagel shops

Antidope, I don't even own a bike. I'm usually with my dogs going to the park, so unless I have a sh*tload of time to walk, it's the car.
Ok, so I lied. I drive from Bed Stuy when I have something else to do in Park Slope.

brooklynfits the only places that "toast" bagels are ones that don't have piping hot bagels coming out of their oven all day long..ie crappy bagel places. Bagel Hole reins supreme!
By Brownstonebabe on March 11, 2010 10:03 AM
antidope spends all day walking around Park Slope looking for the perfect bagel and cup of coffee. The rest of us with lives don't have that kind of time.
By antidope on March 11, 2010 10:39 AM
good one bb. i see you have no self-esteem issues, so you won't be crushed when i suggest you have a reading comprehension issue. i wrote that a) i *don't* do this daily and b) i ride a bike. sheesh. why don't you pick on someone as good looking as you believe yourself to be. jk.

The bodega/fauxdega/whateva was in a building owned by one of the most rapacious landlords in the Slope so they were probably paying hella rent.
Also, for those craving a Bagel Hole baby but unwilling to bike or walk or gallop further south, D'vine Taste on 7th has (or at least used to--I haven't kept current) a daily import from BH...

park slope farm is a fauxdega, not a bodega! i am certain that if a real bodega opened up in that part of park slope the residents would not be "gleeful". that said, what's the best bagel place in park slope anyway?
