Skywatch Comes to Myrtle Avenue

skywatch-myrtle-0310.jpg
A reader tipped us off that the NYPD had set up one of their Skywatch contraptions on Myrtle Avenue at Carlton Avenue yesterday so we swung by this morning to check it out. According to the cops on location, there are now more than 30 of these things in rotation and this one is expected to be there for a couple of weeks. Maybe they should have parked it at Clinton and Greene though: We hear there was a drive-by shooting there last night.

The Martian fighting machines are proceeding down Myrtle Avenue. One of them has stopped and is turning towards us. There's a strange light....

dont these things always sprout up in bad areas when the weather gets warm? warm weather in nyc = bring out your guns!

I wonder if these things are brought out because of one particular incident or is it just part of a larger, routine operation? There was a lot of tension (understandably) on Myrtle this morning on the way to work.

That command center down by the park is back again.

Yes, studies correlate rising temp to crime, and Siouxsie sang about it in "92 Degrees"

These towers are daddy telling you you've been naughty naughty kids.

It only works if the guy inside isn't asleep.

Clinton and Greene drive by shooting? There is a lot of late night activity near the Carlton/Fulton houses and there is a lot of drug activity that spills over into the area. Scary.

There's a lot going on between the projects and the corner of Clinton and Greene! I think it's really a stretch to call that corner scary. Mr. B, what have you heard?

Meanwhile Park Ave under the BQE is now filled with traffic cameras. walk around down there any night and you'll see flash bulbs popping constantly.

All this 2 blocks from the biggest sale in Brooklyn a month ago...hmmm.

By boofer on March 19, 2010 12:28 PM

Yes, there was a drive-by last night on Clinton and Greene. I live on the block. It happened around 9 pm I think. My husband said there was blood on the sidewalk when he went to work this morning.

i'd prefer it was one of these:

Sentry gun from Call of Duty would work too.

What is going on around here??
This is all such crazy violence - shootings, murder, slashing, rape, muggings -
all in 1 month.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

What is being done about this - besides an outpost on 1 corner?

By donatella on March 19, 2010 1:06 PM

That corner of Clinton and Greene is pretty staid -- but there definately is drug activity in the neighborhood and nighttime gunfire at times from around Carlton and Fulton. There was also a 5pm shooting sometime last year on Fulton between Gates and Clinton. So it is not unbelievable that something might happen on Greene and Clinton but it is not what you would associate with a drug dealing "corner", like Fulton Dowling/Grand or Carlton. I don't like it whereever it is, but I would like to find out what happened.

Ok, here is the story on the New York times. There was a shooting on Greene and Clinton at 9:30 pm last night - two adults, not life threatening injuries.

From Tish James' office:

(Brooklyn, NY) - Two men, approximately 30 and 70 years old, were injured yesterday evening about 8:30 pm in a drive-by shooting on Clinton Avenue, between Gates and Greene Avenues. Their injuries were not serious, and the older was an innocent victim struck by a bullet intended for the other man, in what appeared to be a drug-related shooting.

“It is imperative that the 88th Police Precinct be declared an Impact Zone now,” said Council Member James. “There have been five shooting victims within this precinct in the last two weeks, and it is clear that more resources are needed. I call on Commissioner Kelly to respond to the critical public safety needs within the 88th Precinct immediately.”

Thanks for clarifying that, Mr. B. I agree with Tish James.

looks like myrtle is taking it's former nickname back as murder avenue. (and no i dont think that's a good thing, i think it's horrible)

Well, Rob, NYPD has the Skywalk on Myrtle, but this shooting was on Clinton and Greene, farther north (around the corner from me) last night. There is a lot of drug activity in the area and it spills over into otherwise tame areas like Greene and Clinton. It's scary. One of the victims was an innocent 70 year old bystander.

By DeLepp on March 19, 2010 1:48 PM

donatella, we're neighbors it seems and unfortunately fulton and clinton still sucks which is why if I'm on the C I get off at Lafayette instead of clinton-washington. Even in broad daylight that stretch leaves a lot to be desired.

By more4less on March 19, 2010 2:01 PM

it was good to see the massive police presence. it was a ton more than it would've been in the past.

By donatella on March 19, 2010 2:21 PM

DeLepp, I always get on/off there, but I had the experience once of coming home from Lincoln Center after 1 am and that truly nuts -- last time I ever did that. Wow. What a transformation at night. Also the C has to be the worst in the city. If I wasn't so lazy, I would walk down to Atlantic Avenue and just get on the 4/5 there instead of transferring at Fulton St in Manhattan. Actually now that it is warmer, I might start doing that. I always seem to get beat up on my location commentary on houses, but that Dowling house....it's two blocks away from drug dealing central.

By lolalem on March 19, 2010 2:32 PM

There has been much police presence in Fort Greene since the slashing -
but I only see it during the day time not at night.

By DeLepp on March 19, 2010 3:06 PM

donatella, last night I walked up dekalb @ 11:30 and now that's nice the street was packed. Though I live on clinton, that strech between fulton and greene isn't lighted very well.

I deshlepp down dekalb very morning to catch express trains to avoid the G and C, one is worse than the other.

I'm not a pioneer so that downing street house, while lovely wouldn't be for me.

By donatella on March 19, 2010 3:42 PM

DeLepp, that 1 am train ride was the only time I felt physically threatened (though I live in my own little dreamy bubble of denial); my hassle with the whole area around C and Washington was the lack of decent retail and how totally shabby and hideous it looks. But these shootings have unnerved me; right around the corner and so casually shooting a passerby by accident.

By BklynBornNBred on March 19, 2010 10:08 PM

FYI-> CAPS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS COMMENT. WITHIN THE PAST TWO WEEKS, THERE HAVE BEEN 4 SHOOTINGS WITHIN A TWO BLOCK AREA. TWO IN THE PROJECTS, FATAL, ONE AT THE CORNER BODEGA AND ONE AT THE DOMINO'S PIZZA. THIS SETUP IS A PD WAY OF FILMING EVERYTHING THAT GOES ON IN THE AREA. SOONER OR LATER, THE PERSON/PERSONS RUNNING AROUND WITH THE GUNS WILL BE CAUGHT. THE PD CONTRAPTIONS WILL LEAVE AND THINGS WILL GET BACK TO THE WAY THE USED TO BE. THREE SHOOTINGS, NO PD TOWER, FOURTH SHOOTING, PUT UP THE TOWER. MAKE IT LOOK LIKE WE'RE AT LEAST TRYING TO CATCH THEM....MIND YOURSELVES OUT THERE....

By donatella on March 20, 2010 2:24 PM

I called Leticia James office, spoke to some staff, didn't get anything from them really -- the comment above was as much as one might expect. It is worrysome when it spills into areas where you really can't set up one of those things. But I hope you are right, Brooklyn Born and Bread,
that those guys will be caught and things will calm down. I am not happy about this at all. Freaks me out.

By Heather on March 21, 2010 1:26 PM

Well, we were about to move to that corner, guess it's good we didn't. But what's crappier is, I know a lot of people who do live there. Hope everything's okay. It's a really nice part of the neighborhood, actually.
