Shake Shack Coming to Beisl Space?

thomas-beisl-sign-0310.jpg
Could it be true? Is Shake Shack really coming to the Thomas Beisl space across from BAM? We have no idea, but that's the implication of a hint-dropping post on a blog called At the Sign of the Pink Pig. Here's how they put it:

“Let’s say a moderately well-known restaurant was known to be closing its doors after half a dozen or so years. And let's say it had a nice terrace for outdoor dining alongside. And it was very near an entertainment center. A good place for a Shake Shack?

As Grub Street said when the New York Mag food blog reblogged the rumor yesterday, "this reads more like wishful thinking than genuine intel — but, hey, something to think about." After all, Shake Shake's owner Danny Meyer has been eyeing locations in Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene for the last couple of years. And as Eater reported last week, the Beisl space recently hit the market. Here's the listing.

Don't need it. There's the very excellent burger place -- forget the name -- 57 Burger? And they have everything you could want and are very fast besides.

By tinarina on March 19, 2010 9:21 AM

The space really calls for something a little fancier than a Shake Shack to meet pre/post-theatre needs. Maybe another Danny Meyer restaurant?

By wellheythere on March 19, 2010 9:24 AM

Burger 67 is better than Shake Shack. Who needs it.

By dirty_hipster on March 19, 2010 9:29 AM

Shake Shack is tasty - but really just a glorified chain restaurant. Another Meyer restaurant would be nice - but he typically doesn't open anything outside of a 15 block square radius of Union Square.

Yawn. Maybe it's because I'm from the land of In and Out Burger and Tommy's that I find S.S. to be a glorified McD's. Being crammed asses to elbows is not a 'casual' dining experience.

Agree that space needs something a bit spiffier. Sad to see Beisl go but hope something amazing comes in.

In and Out >>>>>>>> Shake Shack

By antidope on March 19, 2010 9:36 AM

*need* and *burger* don't really belong in the same sentence. lots of good burgers around. otoh, good for the nabe as it'd create foot traffic.

Sad about Beisel, terrific food. Tough loca. for resto tho.
Shack has been searching for commissary space in BK also so this is not surprise if it happens.

Beisl had some good food but service could be appalling. The hostess was so rude last time we tried to eat there we just left.

By purplish on March 19, 2010 9:50 AM

Are you people kidding? Burger 67 is terrible. Their veggie burgers in particular are horrendous - they're amorphous, squishy blobs of flavorless mashed vegetables.

By new2hood on March 19, 2010 9:53 AM

I didn't realize Beisl closed. Food was good, but service wasn't that nice. Still a great little neighborhood spot. You would think a family friendly "gastropub"-by thing would be better for this space.

By Butterfly on March 19, 2010 10:03 AM

what's a gastropub?

We loved stopping by Beisl for drinks and food before or after a performance at BAM. Sorry to see it go. Hopefully the next place will be just as accessable with good food and a complete bar.

By slopefarm on March 19, 2010 10:07 AM

Our fave pre-Bam meal is Deniz, the Turkish place 1.5 blocks away on Fulton. Reasonable, really good, great menu.

By tybur6 on March 19, 2010 10:07 AM

Gastropub is a pub that has a focus on food. Not pub food, but really good food, but in a pub atmosphere.

By antidope on March 19, 2010 10:11 AM

like tgif or italian garden?
i heard they're competing for the lease.

By lossforwords on March 19, 2010 10:11 AM

Wait I was just there last Sunday and they're closing? Just my luck! I had some of the best chicken paprikash with spatzle. This sucks. All we need is a long line around the block for a shake shack. I hope they at least turn it into something cool, like an open air restaurant/ gastropub/ biergarten. Al fresco dining and drinking would be a good thing for the area.

By 1842 on March 19, 2010 10:22 AM

Really bummed about them closing. Always enjoyed the food and beer there.

By HDL on March 19, 2010 10:35 AM

Burger 67 is definitely better.

By davfgreene on March 19, 2010 11:16 AM

I'm sorry, I occasionally eat at Burger 67 but its not all that. The burgers are good but not great, the fries are just OK, and its not cheap. A burger and fries will set you back something like $13. The Shake Shack would be most welcome.

I used to go to Biesel after BAM or to meet a friend nearby for a beer or a glass of wine. Agree that food was ok, but service a not so great. I will miss it through -- it was part of going to BAM for me...

By Brownstones Half Off on March 19, 2010 1:19 PM

I never got to try this Biesel spot. Guess I didn't miss anything.

To my surprise they were fully functioning last night. I guess this will continue until there is a serious taker.

By BklynJace on March 19, 2010 3:28 PM

My dream is Danny Meyer makes one of the eternally empty spaces in north Brooklyn Heights work for the next Shack. Never mind that all those spaces are too small or that living near the Shack would make me too large.

I also want a flying car, a Mets World Series win, and my hair back. Don't mind me.

By bksteve on March 19, 2010 4:43 PM

Comparing 67 burger to shake shack in an absolute waste of time. This would be absolutely fantastic news if true, and I really hope that it is...My only concern is my pant size.

My dream was to open a shake shack in ft. greene park, but this will do.

By slick on March 22, 2010 3:26 AM

i cant imagine this is true. ss needs to be closer to court to serve cops, lawyers, litigants, jurors and criminals.

By ohheythere on March 22, 2010 8:30 AM

Yes, 67 Burger is there, but a Shake Shack wouldn't hurt their business. Sometimes you want one kind of burger, and other times you want another. Is there really such a problem as having too many burger options? I don't think so.

By adlbk on March 22, 2010 5:29 PM

This makes me very very very sad. Beisl is one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood and certainly one of the more upscale ones. So perfect for dinner/drinks before or after a night at BAM. And the AMAZING food made it a destination spot.
Shake Shack is so not what I want to see in my neighborhood, and certainly not in that location! Grr...
