Streetlevel: Blue Marble Expanding to Court Street

196-Court-Street-0210.jpg
Good news for Cobble Hill sweet tooths! Blue Marble will be opening its third retail location at 196 Court Street at Wyckoff. The big news is that, in addition to its trademark small-batch, grass-fed ice cream which it makes upstate, Blue Marble will be introducing a new line of soft serve ice cream when the new location opens on February 14th. (The company currently has two other stores in Brooklyn and is in the process of opening non-profit store in Rwanda.) You'll also be able to pick up Nunu Chocolates and Nunu-based hot chocolate at the new location. Sweet. Check out an interior photo, complete with a Taylor Company soft serve machine, on the jump. On summer days when the streets are hot and somnolent find me here.

Posted by: infinitejester at February 4, 2010 2:13 PM

I have a friend who talks INCESSANTLY about this place. She just can't stop talking about Blue Marble. Guess I'll have to try it come warmer weather. I think there's one on Underhill.

Posted by: 11217 at February 4, 2010 2:16 PM

11217- Yes, the shop is located on Underhill between Sterling and Saint Johns. The ice cream is pretty darn good.....

Posted by: PHfamily at February 4, 2010 2:17 PM

isnt this the same location as the now defunct tasti-d-light?

Posted by: jdoo at February 4, 2010 2:18 PM

Thanks PHFamily. I will definitely check it out.

Posted by: 11217 at February 4, 2010 2:20 PM

their prices are ridiculous

Posted by: boerumjn at February 4, 2010 2:31 PM

jdoo, was just coming in to say that. very nice upgrade to blue hill from tasty-d dreck. glad that it's finally filled, seems like there are a lot of storefronts for rent on that stretch (RIP cube 63 et al)

Posted by: CG_ups at February 4, 2010 2:34 PM

doink, i meant blue marble though if we got a blue hill outpost that would be pretty freakin awesome too.

Posted by: CG_ups at February 4, 2010 2:34 PM

CARVEL >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> all these overpriced yuppie ice cream parlors that charge 8 bux a scoop

there's something about carvels ice cream cakes that taste SOOOO good.

Posted by: bowl of dicks at February 4, 2010 2:43 PM

it's the choco crunchy layer in between the icecream that makes carvel cakes tasty. i love that stuff. yum.

Posted by: CG_ups at February 4, 2010 2:43 PM

so many carvel haters. i got 3 words for you, fudgy the whale!!!

Posted by: CG_ups at February 4, 2010 2:45 PM

What office party in the summer would be complete without a Carvel ice cream cake? The ones with mint chocolate chip, the kind where they pulverize the chips, are the best to get.

Posted by: infinitejester at February 4, 2010 2:51 PM

Oh, good for them! We live dangerously close to the Blue Marble on Atlantic, and in the summer we go there way too often than is good for us. Love their dulce de leche ice cream, esp. with hot fudge. So glad to hear their business is doing well--if an ice cream place is expanding in the wintertime, they must be doing something right!

Posted by: Brownstonerlogin at February 4, 2010 2:59 PM

I wonder what grass-fed ice cream really tastes like? Hmm...

Posted by: denton at February 4, 2010 3:00 PM

yeah rob I used to like that Carvel stuff, especially with that fake butterscotch. Talk about chemicals! But eventually I left the ghetto and learned how to live it up.

Posted by: denton at February 4, 2010 3:09 PM

well there's room in the world for both. i love carvel. i think the greatest invention of the 20th century was the personal sized carvel ice cream cake that you can get for like 7 bucks at key food.

but blue marble is really amazing. it might be the best ice cream i've ever had.

Posted by: duckumu at February 4, 2010 3:15 PM

are you kidding? I'm not a carvel hater, I was raised on that crizzzap. There is one around the corner from my apt! :-)

since when is Carvel considered GHETTO!?!? snobasaurus much?

Posted by: Butterfly at February 4, 2010 3:24 PM

Oh how I wish we were getting a Blue Marble in Red Hook instead of an Uncle Louie G's. Sigh.

Posted by: Combustiblegirl2 at February 4, 2010 3:25 PM

Carvel is ghetto? Damn. Then what is Baskin-Robbins?!

Posted by: cillmylandlord_again at February 4, 2010 3:42 PM

Posted by: Butterfly at February 4, 2010 3:49 PM

The ice cream truck is the most ghetto form of ice cream. It's funny to see the people in the fancy nabes run after that truck with their kids. Anthing on edible on wheels...Ickfest.

Posted by: cillmylandlord_again at February 4, 2010 3:57 PM

rob, I once had a pint of that for an evenng snack for a week straight.

Posted by: infinitejester at February 4, 2010 3:57 PM

The ice cream trucks have crappy ice cream and are such a rip off.

Do deli's, corner stores or as some might call them bodegas, still sell those 25cent ice cream sandwiches? I use to get two of those and be the happiest kid in town.

Posted by: Expert Textpert at February 4, 2010 4:08 PM

B&R makes some good sh*t, my fave is pralines and cream. Yum.

Well, yeah, Carvel is equally white trash and ghetto, ya heard?

I guess you could say Carvel is the White Castle of ice cream.

Posted by: denton at February 4, 2010 4:23 PM

We just closed on a place around the corner from the Atlantic location. I dread being so close to the best Strawberry ice cream I have ever had. Between that and the poutine at Mile End, I better start looking for a size up in my pants/

why is it funny? why is it an ickfest? running for the ice cream part is part of the fun! maybe some people prefer that than get served ice cream in a fancy place by someone donning a picklepuss? i dont know. yeah obviously ice cream truck ice cream IS the most ghetto, but still, why the attitude toward it?

*rob*

The berry ice creams I believe are what Blue Marble does best. Blueberry being my fave. They make this frozen yogurt flavour that is very tart but tasty that I used to feed to the beagle. Does anyone know where upstate they make their ice cream- I would like to stalk?

Carvel ice cream cakes are not as good as the Dairy Queen, Friendly or Baskin Robbins cakes they were just better marketers with Cookie Puss and Fudgie the Whale which by the way were all made from the same mold form.

Small batch ice cream is the way it used to be always made - there were places where I grew up where this is was the norm and they were beat out by places like Carvel and are no longer around.

Lots of cows are grass fed - the Stony Field brand is - it does taste better, just as it does for cheese.

Blue marble I don't find that expensive; you can pick your size and they have these smaller scoops which have inevitably less calories not to mention cost less.

But I mean who eat ice cream everyday?

I am excited about the soft serve. And I am excited to say soft serve too!

Posted by: Ljubitca at February 4, 2010 4:32 PM

Picklepuss I believe was also one of carvel's characters :) *rob*

Posted by: Ljubitca at February 4, 2010 4:36 PM

of course an ice cream shop will thrive in a gentrified neighborhood. the yuppies can fork out $5 for 1 smalll scoop of their all natural ice cream. yay!

Posted by: dieselfuel222 at February 4, 2010 4:37 PM

Food on wheels is gross to me (i.e. street meat). That would be the ickfest part. Therefore, I do not like the "chase"...chasing my food is not fun.

Posted by: cillmylandlord_again at February 4, 2010 4:37 PM

ROB-

the BEST soft serve ice cream truck is a russian or ukranian woman in soho. she is usually on broome, prince or spring near broadway. the ice cream is crazy good.

Posted by: dieselfuel222 at February 4, 2010 4:40 PM

Based on these comments you have wonder how all those gentrified buyers at the Rwanda store. This store has been a great addition to Boerum Hill. Nice owners. Nice place. Great product. As regards price, if you go to Baskin & Robbins and order a cup of ice cream you get to pay for a huge portion of mediocre ice cream. If you go to Blue Marble, you can order exactly what you want. Number of scoops and size of scoops.

Posted by: Butterfly at February 4, 2010 4:53 PM

*rob* can you find the russian and report back?

Posted by: Ljubitca at February 4, 2010 4:57 PM

she sells from a truck? what does the truck look like? sometimes there's a crepe/belgiun waffle truck outside at night, is that who you are talking about? it looked like a bunch of kids tho. other than that it's just typical falafal and hotdog trucks

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at February 4, 2010 5:01 PM

rob-

she is right off broadway many months of the year. 2 years ago she was on broome and last year she moved up to spring or prince. not sure which one. it's a white truck with some red and it's a reddish haired eastern european woman. her soft serve is like crack!

Posted by: dieselfuel222 at February 4, 2010 5:04 PM

my old man visited me this past spring and he was blown away and he is a big soft serve eater. he said it's the best he ever had. she is their from spring into the fall. when spring comes and i am in soho i will let you know what street she is on.

Posted by: dieselfuel222 at February 4, 2010 5:08 PM

cool i will definitely look out for her this spring. i actually like soft serve more than hard serve.

*rob*

Posted by: Butterfly at February 4, 2010 5:10 PM

yea, i like soft serve a lot more too.

hey 11217, suck on this! Don't tell me you have never cared about wall street, you sniveling panderer to rich bankers. You disgust me. You are the biggest fan of wall street on here, and wall street bonuses in particular, which by the way were paid out of money stolen from the the rest of america.

Too much ice cream, stevieb?

Posted by: Expert Textpert at February 4, 2010 6:09 PM

i'm so happy blue marble is doing well. their scoops are a little pricier than baskin robbins. but the ice cream is a lot better. it's a whole you get what you pay for thing. without a doubt, the best strawberry ice cream around. and that eggnog ice cream was the bomb.

those cute little cobble hill boutiques better start stocking plus sizes.
