Wendy's Doubles Down in Downtown Brooklyn

wendys-291-livingston-0110.jpg
People must really love their fast food in Downtown Brooklyn. Business was so good at Wendy's on Fulton Street that the national chain decided to open another location less than ten blocks away: The maker of square burgers just last week opened a 3,400-square-foot restaurant at 291 Livingston Street. CPEX was the broker on the deal. GMAP

Wendy's Chili is SOOOOO good. dont knock it til youve tried it. it's also pretty healthy for what it is!

By daveinbedstuy on January 5, 2010 9:38 AM

Not as healthy as Taco bell tacos!!!

By Gross on January 5, 2010 9:38 AM

Its a shame that affordable food has to be so bad for you. The illusion is that there is variety in fast food but the truth is that it is mostly corn products chemically treated to assault your nervous system.

By tybur6 on January 5, 2010 9:39 AM

Well... 10 blocks is pretty far, no? And I think Wendy's is delicious!

This is nothing new really. There had been two Wendy's in downtown Brooklyn for a long time. Both did well - there was a Wendy's outpost in the late Albee Square Mall in addition to the one on Fulton St.

By tybur6 on January 5, 2010 9:40 AM

Gross... I was with you, then you lost me with your last 2 words.

I've heard that some of the Wendy's products are mind altering.

By Butterfly on January 5, 2010 9:51 AM

i heard they also put this craaAaaAazy chemical in their fries that make poor people sterile!

Thanks. Natural selection at it's finest.

I'm not trying to convince you of anything, eat as much Wendy's as you like. Just don't pretend it is good food, or good for you. When you have time you should watch a couple of movies on the subject:

Food Inc.
The Beautiful Truth
King Corn
The Future of Food
Super Size me

I would try and give some example of an opposing view point but oddly there are many to speak of.

By Stonergut on January 5, 2010 9:56 AM

Christ, bklynite. What do we want there? Ann Taylor and a Dean and DeLuca annex?

By infinitejester on January 5, 2010 9:57 AM

Better for lunch time is to wolf down a small meal or sandwich in your cafeteria or lounge and then go for a walk. the lines at this place I imagine will be horrendous. I hate wasting my lunchtime waiting for my food.

The chili here IS delicious. I always get the taco salad.

By Gross on January 5, 2010 9:59 AM

"just what downtown brooklyn does NOT Need more of."

Well then it wont do any business and it will go under - thats how it works.

As for the food - while I doubt it will win any health awards overall, I do believe that it has some healthy options - baked potatoes, chili, salads, and a few more (its been awhile) - but until you people start getting in an uproar about The Chipshop or the Shake Shack - your outrage will be revealed for the bourgeois hypocrisy it really is.

I love french fries fried in duck fat. I'm not going to hate on Wendy's. People make their own choices. I like a Whopper every now and then....too bad th fries at BK suck.

I tried to get in to Chipolte yesterday but the line was practically out the door.

Why Five Guys passed on opening a store downtown, one would never know - in would have been the busiest in the city.

At least Arby's is coming to fulton

By fsrg on January 5, 2010 10:41 AM

Isnt that amazing????? - how is it possible after decades that they still have $hitty fries....I just dont get who is running that company, are they retarded?

By tybur6 on January 5, 2010 10:46 AM

fsrq, I agree. What is that texture? No other restaurant on the planet produces fries with that texture... how do they do it? It's not pleasing. Actually, the only thing I like at BK is a regular ol' cheeseburger... and I REALLY like those. Waaaaay too much.

By infinitejester on January 5, 2010 10:49 AM

Corner Burger's fries have that same texture. I rather like it.

By TownhouseLady on January 5, 2010 10:53 AM

Wendy's is one of the tastiest of all the fast food joints.

Besides, sometimes fast and cheap is just what's needed.

By DitmasSnark on January 5, 2010 10:59 AM

> Besides, sometimes fast and cheap is just what's needed.

And she sets it up...

By 11217 on January 5, 2010 11:10 AM

I'm not really sure why people say fast food is cheap. I haven't eaten fast food in maybe 5 years, so perhaps I'm out of touch with the prices, but to get a meal there it's probably what like 6 or 7 bucks?

For that, I can make a dinner of a couple roasted chicken breasts, and a huge tray of rosemary roasted carrots, potatoes and onion with a side of spinach.

Much healthier.

It's a myth that eating fruits and vegetables is more expensive than fast food, in my opinion.

By InsertSnappyNameHere on January 5, 2010 11:10 AM

I can't even touch that...it speaks for itself :-) Nice one, THL!

I like that perma-crunch coating on fries. IMO, there is nothing worse than limp, soggy fries. Can't eat those. At all.

And fsrg(q?), you are right on about the Chip Shop/Shake Shack hypocrisy.

By bklynite on January 5, 2010 11:13 AM

wait, what's the hypocrisy? the subtexts on this blog are a bit out of control.

By InsertSnappyNameHere on January 5, 2010 11:14 AM

11217, that price point is exactly what keeps me from eating fast food too often. I started doing the math (and I suck at math!) on what I could do with that 5-7 duckets. Sure, a $5 footlong turkey sandwich at subway is quick and easy, but for just a few bucks more, I can get enough turkey, bread and lettuce and have sandwiches for a week.

By 11217 on January 5, 2010 11:18 AM

Exactly Snappy.

And for that $7 I spent for the chicken and roasted vegetables, that is usually enough for TWO dinners!

I get that people eat fast food because they either like the taste of it or they want something fast, but to claim that it's cheap doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me.

Hell, I can even go get the hummus and lentil soup at Olive Vine and that's about the same price and that actually tastes like real food and not rubber or dog meat.

By bklynite on January 5, 2010 11:21 AM

Stonergut -- wendy's opening another store in downtown Brooklyn is like another mediocre midrange restaurant opening on Montague street. let's get some variety going for goodness sakes. what do you want there?

By FYI on January 5, 2010 11:25 AM

Gmap shows an unverified listing for BEST BUY on Livingston near this Wendy's. Was there one at this spot? Are there plans for one there?

By infinitejester on January 5, 2010 11:34 AM

"Cheap" also refers to the labor involved in preparing the meal. Spend $$, eat, throw away the packaging. For lunch, it is just easier for people - I never cease to be amazed by how many people buy their lunches every single day. It does not take an inordinate amount of time to set yourself up for some healthy meals to come home to and devour, or to take to work. In about half an hour I will have some salmon, pasta, and beets with a cold glass of milk, and then go shopping for a birthday card for my nephew.

As someone once said, "I didn't move to this town to make dinner."

By 11217 on January 5, 2010 11:39 AM

...what they really need downtown is a White Castle!

why is it so damned hard to get White Castle?
you have to end up going to Williamsburg (metropolitan ave.) or way the hell down Atlantic Avenue in East New York, just to get a fix of those little steamed bastards.

By 11217 on January 5, 2010 12:07 PM

Legion,

There are White Castles on Willoughby and Fulton, one on 4th Avenue and 30th Street, one on Atlantic and Grand, Ft. Hamilton Parkway and 42nd, Myrtle between Linden and Gates...

Shall I continue...?

By InsertSnappyNameHere on January 5, 2010 12:07 PM

we could definitely use more downtown

I can actually count on two hands the amount of times I've ever eaten fast food...not including Pizza Hut. Not sure if one would count that or not, but I've definitely had my share of pan pizza in my day.

By InsertSnappyNameHere on January 5, 2010 12:24 PM

you do not know what you are missing my friend.

then comes the crave.

there's a reason they've been serving them
for over a hundred years.

By InsertSnappyNameHere on January 5, 2010 12:33 PM

LOL Legion...I actually haven't eaten at a White Castle since I lived in Chicago. I've heard their burger taste has changed, but I guess I'll have to head on down one day and see for myself.

By daveinbedstuy on January 5, 2010 12:33 PM

If you've never had Chicago deep dish pizza, you should go to Chicago to try it. I recommend Giordano's and Eduardo's over all the others especially Pizzzeria Uno.

By 11217 on January 5, 2010 12:34 PM

I've got my own version of fast food.

It's a little place called Bark and their damn disco fries. I wake up in the middle of the night craving those suckers.

The hot dogs and burger are worth writing home about too, in my opinion.

By InsertSnappyNameHere on January 5, 2010 12:36 PM

Benson, Bark is on Bergen between 5th Avenue and Flatbush on that now really super cute block of shops. It's literally right as you get out of the 2/3 Bergen stop next to Pintchik Hardware.

And then if you haven't been, stop in to BKLYN Larder just around the corner on Flatbush and pick up some of their homemade gelato. YUM!

dibs,
last time in Chicago, I went straight
to Giordano's and it was awesome.
what's your favorite deep dish in NYC?

By InsertSnappyNameHere on January 5, 2010 12:52 PM

Being from Chicago, it's likely a total crime to say this, but I don't care for deep dish pizza. Not Chicago deep dish and not NYC deep dish.

By Butterfly on January 5, 2010 12:52 PM

11217 is right. fast food generally is not cheap at all.
people make up all kinds of excuses why they dont eat healthier, and often cost is the reason, but really it's very easy to find cheap healthy food. hell even in soho, big bananas cost only 35 cents!

on that note, i had the wendy's chili for lunch today. :) it only has 6 grams of fat or something and high in fiber. it was 1.74.

*rob*

By benson on January 5, 2010 12:53 PM

No contest. L&B Spumoni Gardens on 86th Street in my home nabe, Gravesend.

bark is MASSIVELY overpriced, i dont care what anyone says.

my aunt worked at white castle for many years back in the day. she was never able to wash the smell of it off her ahhahah. she reeked like white castle 24/7!!

i loved white castle as a kid.. but i couldnt justify paying like a buck now for one of those teeny tiny burgers. they had good shakes tho

*rob*

By Legion on January 5, 2010 12:59 PM

benson,

I know it well. used to stop there for lunch all the time when I worked in Bensonhurst, their sauce is excellent.
Do you know if Totonno's has re-opened yet on Neptune?
I do believe that is the FIRST or OLDEST pizzeria (challenge to fsrg and 11217) in America.

By 11217 on January 5, 2010 1:04 PM

"bark is MASSIVELY overpriced, i dont care what anyone says."

No, it's not.

Their burger is $6.96 and is excellent.

Their hot dogs range from $4.25 to around 6 or 7 bucks and are high quality Austrian hot dogs (more $$ than Nathan's but you can taste the difference). Plus the buns are insanely good.

And they have Six Points beer (they make a special beer JUST for Bark) is $4 and on Friday and Saturday from 10pm till 2am they have $15 all you can drink Six Points beer. That's a bargain.

It's certainly more $$ than fast food, but the ingredients are quality, the space is super nice and the place does an amazing job of ACTUALLY doing their part to help the environment.

You get what you pay for.

By etson on January 5, 2010 1:05 PM

in an open dish with a wooden fork thing. and they used to have orange donuts if I remember.
don't get me wrong folks, I'm not saying white castle is a night at Chanterelle, it's just a new york thing like Nathan's.
by the way, I think they also have a dollar menu.

By benson on January 5, 2010 1:10 PM

I heard that Totonno's has re-opened, but that it is not as good since the old man retired. I never heard that they were the first pizzeria - that's a new one for me.

By 11217 on January 5, 2010 1:25 PM

Rob,

As I said, most of the hot dogs on their menu are $4.25 - $6.00 dollars.

None of them are $8. There's a big difference between 5 dollars and 8 dollars.

Why don't you go try it first before you rip it apart. Have you ever even walked by the place?

There are lots of people beside me who like Bark, and your suggestion that anyone who likes Bark is a horrible person is offensive to say the least.

By Legion on January 5, 2010 1:27 PM

11217,

when I want a snack,
I wanna pay 2 bucks and want some grease.
I don't want to know how I'm saving the

By The Who on January 5, 2010 1:28 PM

Fast food means maybe that the food moves faster.
It would mean that there is less time to have rodents crawling all over your vittles before service.

By 11217 on January 5, 2010 1:29 PM

And P.S. While I happen to enjoy "reading" New York Mag from time to time, I don't think most people would consider The New Yorker (who gave Bark a glowing recommendation) a "stupid rag."

Benson and Legion, Spumoni is the BEST with the square slices, no competition.

I was by Totonnos last week and saw them working on the new place but it definitely wasn't open. Maybe they managed to finish everything and had it up and running as of this year but it wasn't open the week between Christmas and New Years that's for sure.

By infinitejester on January 5, 2010 1:47 PM

benson and legion, I will personally treat you both to a meal at Bark the eve of our next meetup if you so wish. It is WAY out of my way (ask me at the next gathering how far I have to trek to get to that place, jaysus christ what a hike) but the pork sandwich is it! NOWHERE sells a tenderloin sandwich except this place.

By jessibaby on January 5, 2010 1:50 PM

This is what the New Yorker says about the table tents there that boast of Bark's eco-friendly choices:

"The information is interesting, but its presentation verges on self-righteous"

Perfect for 11217.

kens,

sounds like Spumoni Gardens is the only thing you will ever get all the brownstone posters to agree on.

By daveinbedstuy on January 5, 2010 2:23 PM

Not sure why you are all talking about White castle as the "seminal New York experience." It was started in Wichita, Kansas and the stores are modeled after the hicago "Water Tower."

It's about as "New York" as a deep dish pizza or a Philly cheesesteak.

By infinitejester on January 5, 2010 2:32 PM

Legion, excellent - although it's not a pulled pork sandwich but rather a pork chop sandwich, as in a battered pork chop like a fish sandwich. It has this pickled cole slaw to go on top. Perfect meal.

By Legion on January 5, 2010 2:49 PM

dibs,

I'm sure it's a Chicago thing and a Philadelphia thing as much as certain pizzeria's or hot dog joints are.
If you grew up in New York as I did, you will invariably have a story linked to White Castle since they were always there and always open for that 3:00AM run.

Picture the scene in Saturday Night Fever where they're jumping on top of the tables in White Castle, that's the one that used to be on 5th Ave and 90 something street in Bay Ridge, Ironically the space is now occupied by a Pizza Uno's and a big building.

These places were always more homey and chintzy than other fast food places (if that's even possible) and were always present in the working class areas. Hardly ever in suburban areas.

again, Jean Georges has nothing to worry about.

jester,

I haven't had lunch yet. you're killing me with that description of the tasty pork sandwich! lol

By daveinbedstuy on January 5, 2010 2:51 PM
