Streetlevel: Soccer Bar Opens on Vanderbilt

A new bar called Woodwork opened last week at 583 Vanderbilt Avenue in Prospect Heights. It's not just any bar, though, it's a self-proclaimed soccer bar. We're more excited about the fact that the bar and table tops were made out of recycled wood from a 150-year-old barn from Cambridge, MA. Anyone check it out yet? GMAP

Huh. A soccer bar.
A net and goalie at one end? After a shot, the drinker gets a chance to score? Women ripping tank tops over their heads, or men with well-shaped buttocks dropping trou?
I'll go.

AWESOME! Was just talking to a friend yesterday about the world cup and where we'd watch the games...hoping some bar would be open early enough given the S.A. time difference, and dreaded the idea of trekking to Nevada Smiths. Will be checking this one out, and possibly start having my mail forwarded there.

I agree, BSD. It's going to be mobbed in every bar this June. In 2006 they had to take reservations in several places for the semis and the final.

Just looked them up on yelp and they already have three 5 star reviews.
Apparently the food is really good too!!

A soccer mom bar? Do they offer minivan valet?

Are soccer bars the latest trend? One just opened up in Bay Ridge about two weeks ago and people love it. Its called Longbow Pub and Pantry. The guy is Welsh and serves up a nice selection of beer. I also suspect it will be packe in June.

I had to create a profile just to comment on how excited I am about this. (Big soccer nerd, here.) I've been traveling to Black Horse in Park Slope when I didn't feel like making the trek into Manhattan to watch my Arsenal matches, but this even better — it's within walking distance of my apartment! Hoping they show all the games, it'll be great for those 8am kickoffs when the G train is out of service. Can't wait to check it out.

If Noki's going, I'm going, especially if there are "men with well-shaped buttocks dropping trou".

I'm the same height as Maradona. his legs are significantly stouter however:).

Went on Friday night with my wife. Chef is called Ross and has a great pedigree. Made the most incredible cheese plate, described every cheese in detail and why he selected it, and then paired it with great wine. Also had his '6 Cheese' Mac & Cheese which was equally great.
It's a soccer bar with a twist - it's cool!!! I enjoyed friday evening so much I left the wife at home on Saturday and went in to watch the midday games.
Good drink, good food, fully recommended.

Soccer bar means you can't use your hands.
By Nokilissa on January 25, 2010 3:25 PM
Yes Jester, but are your buttocks as well-shaped? (actually, his did seem to be quite lovely at one time, ponder, ponder)
CGar, done! We'll meet for eye candy, lob soccer balls into the crowd with our heads and drink out of mint julep cups without using our hands. It will be frisky.

"Soccer bar" = excuse for people that like to drink at strange times of day.

Thx Jason, good m&c is even more reason to visit.
11217, of the 3 reviews, 2 of the 5-stars are from people posting their first review ever. That always makes me raise a brow.
Soccer bars mean you hear a cheer once every hour, versus every 10 seconds in a basketball game where you really only need to watch the last 5 minutes.

Didn't see that BSD.
But you know, sometimes people do love a place so much that it inspires them to join and post on yelp.
That's how I came to it.
I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but you're right...I guess 2 of them could be people affiliated with the place. Doesn't matter, it sounds like an excellent addition to the hood any way you slice it.

You're a nicer person than I am. But great sounding place nonetheless.

Haven't been there yet, but walked by it on Friday night and it was PACKED! Always a good sign for a brand new place.

This is awesome. By the way, the official US soccer supporter's pub is JAck Demseys at the friendly but admittedly less agreeable location of 33rd street between 6th and 7th in Manhattan. I intend to watch some club football here, can't wait!

We need a Floyd's north of Flatbush. Any pub that opens at 7am serving a proper pint with a match on the tele is heaven in my book.

Please don't tell me it's World Cup time again! I'm sure there are some genuine fans out there, but mostly it is just a time for losers to claim they LOVE soccer (errr.. excuse me, football) so they can think they look cool and cosmopolitan. When it is over, they never even pretend to watch another game.
Sorry to say, but for me, it is so freaking boring that watching it makes me want to poke my eyes out. I'll be sure to stay as far away from this place as possible.

Anyone know if they play just EPL games, or other leagues too? I watch EPL...significant other watches Bundesliga.

Hmmm a "soccer" bar that has cheese plates? Bill Shankly is turning in his grave.
By Heather on January 25, 2010 6:52 PM
Are they going to show rugby?
By Sparafucile on January 25, 2010 7:19 PM
Sheep Station on 4th Avenue near Douglass is an Australian bar that shows rugby.
By Leo on January 25, 2010 9:39 PM
That's interesting Sparafucile. That has what to do with a soccer bar exactly?

Vanderbilt Ave. rocks my world.
Just keeps getting better and better.
Been hearing about this place, but haven't yet checked it out. Looks nice from the outside.
