Streetlevel: Joya Expanding to Fulton Street

723-Fulton-Street-0110.jpg
When we spotted a changing of the guard at 723 Fulton Street back in October, one commenter stated rather authoritatively that it was going to be "a Thai restaurant brought to you by an operator of a thai restaurant on Court Street south of Atlantic." Turns out that was right on the mark: Joya, the popular Court Street spot, will be expanding to the Fort Greene location, based upon an application taped up on the plywood shed. Excited?

Joya might not be the best Thai on Court St but it'll be the best in Ft Greene/Clinton Hill. Cant wait till it arrives cause the current Thai in the area is crap

By cillmylandlord_again on January 29, 2010 2:12 PM

I'd heard they'd been trying to find a spot in Ft. Greene since since about 2007...yes, excited.

I love the new look of this site. Lots of bigger pictures and excellent stories.

Thai 101 is pretty good, good prices. There are several mediocre Thai places that deliver to my home on Classon. Another Thai place would have been my last choice, but if they are really really good and willing to travel then i'm happy.

By you said what 0_o on January 29, 2010 2:21 PM

Joya is excellent. I hope they deliver a little further than what would be considered normal too.

By fsrg on January 29, 2010 2:22 PM

Good for them - Joya nad Song are very well run and great prices with good food.
I wonder how many more locations they need before the frownstoners start bitching that they dont want another chain restaurant!

By more4less on January 29, 2010 2:26 PM

now, how about a good chinese place? the typical take-outs are crap. that one on myrtle and hall is good but would love to have another one

By 11217 on January 29, 2010 2:28 PM

Sorry to be a frownstoner here, but Joya and Song have both gone STEADILY downhill recently. I think both are extremely mediocre on a good day.

Best Thai around is Mee Thai (you wouldn't know by looking at it, but the food is excellent). One of the best Thai in Brooklyn, in my opinion.

I just had Sripraphai a couple weeks ago, and then Mee Thai last week and I'm not gunna say they're equal, but they both make Joya and Song look pretty bad.

BUT I'm sure this is awesome for the neighborhood. Some people aren't too picky about their Thai anyway.

By bklynbpr on January 29, 2010 2:37 PM

I'm curious abuot this space. I wonder how large it is and if they'll have a courtyard. It seems small from the outside and based on my experience, Joya/Song are regularly very crowded.

By more4less on January 29, 2010 2:39 PM

11217,

thai in the hood very bad. let say it again, very bad. Joya, even if gottten worst, is probably going to a huge improvement.

where's Mee Thai?

Another good Thai in queens is Thai Pavillion (30th ave btwn 37th & 38th st). decor is not as fancy looking as Sri but food is very good, good portions, decent prices and I like that there's a ton of bars, cafes, bakeries near by.

By zinka on January 29, 2010 2:58 PM

There's no Thai food anywhere in the neighborhood, and Joya is pretty good (if totally inauthentic). I hope this branch of Joya is as cheap as the Court St branch.

By cillmylandlord_again on January 29, 2010 3:04 PM

I'm happy to have any edible additions to the Fort Greene menus! Between the below average service and the waaay average food...Fort Greeen's food is much to be desired.

By 11217 on January 29, 2010 3:09 PM

"where's Mee Thai?"

180 5th Ave (between Berkeley Pl & Degraw St)

Check them out on yelp...lots of terrific reviews. I won't go back to Song or Joya anymore after tasting Mee Thai. It's cheap AND authentic! But NOT fancy or necessarily the most inviting decor. Don't care if the food's good though.

But I know proximity to where one lives is key too.

By bupe on January 29, 2010 3:15 PM

Beet is not bad (south slope). What I really want, though, is a good PHO place nearby... A girl can dream.

By more4less on January 29, 2010 3:15 PM

11217,

thanks. When I see you at the next gathering, I'll ask for your contact info - you're great source for bar, restaurant stuff

By DeLepp on January 29, 2010 3:20 PM

This stretch getting much better, turkish, greek and now thai.

By more4less on January 29, 2010 3:29 PM

Delepp, we need the stretch of fulton near us to get in gear.

By FYI on January 29, 2010 3:32 PM

I heard it will be called "Ray Ray thai", which through me off the JOYA lead as Song meaning TWO was the second restaurant, I thought the Third would be called "Sam". Regardless, this is great news for that strip.

By wasder on January 29, 2010 3:33 PM

M4L--isn't that what the new BID is supposed to do? Here's hoping...we need a lot of new businesses on Fulton in Clinton Hill.

By DeLepp on January 29, 2010 3:34 PM

m4l, there is something almost mystical holding that area back. To be frank I rather take C to lafayette then bother with clinton-washington.

By more4less on January 29, 2010 3:43 PM

Wasder, I remember brokers were selling me the bill of goods regarding buying in the area - besides AY bs, they were saying this stretch of fulton will look like that stretch in ft greene. that was 2002. Now doesnt look much of a change or improvement vs. then.

By bklynbpr on January 29, 2010 3:48 PM

does anyone else get creeped out by that weird party supply store on fulton @ s. elliot? their inventory is dusty and at least 10 years old. they always have weathered and damaged books and vhs's on the table outside and never seem to have a customer. ever. how do they stay in business?!

By FYI on January 29, 2010 3:56 PM

That dusty party goods store was cleared out 2 weeks ago.

By bklynbpr on January 29, 2010 3:59 PM

i think that block is primed for a serious upturn. one of the bodegas also "closed for renovation" -- usually a good sign i'd say.

By FYI on January 29, 2010 4:04 PM

That bodega next door to this topical new thai place needs some tlc.

By Lesloaf on January 29, 2010 4:14 PM

Thanks 11217! Haven't tried Mee Thai but now I definitely will.

And I totally agree with Bupe -- why oh why can't there be pho in the Slope?? We regularly travel to chinatown for our fix.

By 11217 on January 29, 2010 4:25 PM

Don't be turned off by the odd (and sometimes loud) music, Lesloaf. The food itself is quite delicious.

Their Drunken Noodle may be the best in NYC.

that did it - cancelling the italian dinner plans tomorrow; heading there instead cause that's my fav dish

By slick on January 29, 2010 4:52 PM

Joya is a lot better than Song when the main chef is working. Both are low price for pretty good food.

People should be celebrating on Fulton St.

By davfgreene on January 29, 2010 5:52 PM

Give me a simple, good Mexican here in Fort Greene. Hey Nuevo Mexico, La Superior, or Heche en Dumbo, if any of you are reading this, open a branch here!

By jfss on January 29, 2010 6:16 PM

I never saw the attraction with Joya. I find it mediocre, noisy and unpleasant.

By bococaloca on January 29, 2010 6:20 PM

You're right about it being noisy and unpleasant, jfss, but attraction with Joya is for delivery. It's super fast, cheap, and completely satisfying. The curries and spicy noodles are fantastic delivery.

By albemarle on January 30, 2010 2:35 PM

I'll chime in with props for Mee Thai -- very fresh -- tasty noodles and decently priced lunch specials. Great friendly service too.

By BrooklynGreene on January 30, 2010 2:57 PM

There is very, very little decent Thai food served in New York City in my opinion. End of story.

I'm sure though that this spot may turn out to be a nice neighborhood place close at hand. The South Asian restaurant didn't do very well as I remember.

If you want great Thai food served in a restaurant, head to the West Coast or go to Thailand. Make sure you tell the server to hold the sugar! Thai food has been getting progressively sweeter over the years in Thailand which is annoying but considering sugarcane is native to Southeast Asia, I guess it's not bizarre. Of course, eating tomatoes, baby corn and carrots in Thai food served in Bangkok is a bit annoying to purists!

But of course, even the chili is not native to Southeast Asia, right?

Anyway, looking forward to something decent since the Cambodian place closed (as rundown as it looked...which was kind of "authentic" and the fact that I got food poisoning from the twice)...what happened to the owners? I read about them...didn't they get screwed and lose their business when they relocated to Manhattan and are now under a mountain of debt?

By Low_Talker338 on January 30, 2010 5:35 PM

Kudos and much luck wished to the JOYA owners. They are pillars of our community.

Mark and Jennifer say hi!

By yellowcalla on January 31, 2010 9:31 AM

Obviously, a big part of the success of Joya and Song is not just that they serve consistently tasty food but that their prices are so reasonable! Our borough really needs more restaurants like this-- delicious food priced below $10 (entree). There's definitely a market for this!

By zinka on February 1, 2010 11:33 AM

The food at the Cambodian place was TERRIBLE, though... mostly tasted like bad, bland Chinese takeout. No relation to actual Cambodian food (yes, I've been to Cambodia).
