Strollers Recalled in U.S. on Finger Amputation Risk
Jan. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Newell Rubbermaid Inc. is recalling 1.5 million strollers after reports of children’s fingertips getting caught in the products’ hinges, resulting in cuts and amputations, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
Newell Rubbermaid’s Graco unit received reports of five amputations and two lacerations after children placed their fingers in the strollers’ hinges while the canopy was being opened or closed, the agency said. The commission announced the voluntary recall today in a statement on its Web site.
Don't these PS stroller moms pay attention when they take their babies out of the strollers. Are they all drunk all day????

For those who think taxes don't matter:
Every day thousands of Americans vote with their feet on the best places to live and work, and these migration patterns can tell a lot about state economies—and economic policies. United Van Lines has released its annual report for 2009, based on those the moving company has relocated across one state line to another, and the winner is . . .
But first the biggest loser, which was Michigan for the fourth year in a row. More than two families left the state for every family that moved in. The fall of GM and Chrysler has obviously hurt. But two-term Governor Jennifer Granholm has also made her state the test case for the policy mix of raising taxes on higher incomes, increasing regulation, and steering taxpayer money at favored programs like job retraining and renewable energy. It hasn't worked for Michigan, even with the auto bailouts.
Ms. Granholm continues to be a regular economic policy adviser to the White House. Yikes.
The next two biggest net losers were Illinois and New Jersey, while California and New York also continued to have far more departures than arrivals.
Ten states gained net arrivals: Oregon, Arkansas, Nevada, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Georgia, New Mexico, Texas and North Carolina. Of those, only Oregon sways decidedly to the political left and it has benefited from the economic refugees fleeing California.
Six of the eight states with no income tax were magnets for families, while eight of the 10 highest income tax states had more people packing. Democrats in state capitals and Washington have convinced themselves that "soak the rich" tax policies can help balance budgets, but the main effect seems to be to stimulate bon voyage parties.
As for the biggest winner, well, our readers won't be surprised to learn that it was Washington, D.C. by a large margin. United Van Lines moved nearly seven families to the federal city last year for every three it moved out. As always when the feds gear up the income redistribution machine, the imperial city and its denizens get a big cut of the action.
As in ancient Rome, the provinces are being required to send tribute to subsidize those living in the capital, which produces few services save transfer payments. No wonder the provincials are starting to rebel—even in Massachusetts.

Having a soap box morning:
Jan. 12: A Pathmark shopper left his personal belongs unattended for five minutes and returned to find them gone. Items reported missing include a Medicaid card, debit cards, a cell-phone charger, a pair of D&G sunglasses valued at $500, two backpacks, a $400 Ralph Lauren coat, red coat, gloves and a brown Loius Vitton wallet; total worth $1,534.
On medicaid and has all these goodies, lovely.

I watched the election coverage last night. Fun.
Bizarre moment in Brown's victory speech when he said of his daughters: "and in case anyone out there is wondering, they are both available". Awkward laughter around the room.

OK, maybe you folks can help me out. Two questions:
1. I'm planning to be there tomorrow at Exit the King. I am low carb at the moment so beer and even wine are out. But for 20 years my alky drink consumption has been limited to beer, wine and the very occasional mojito. I want something very simple to order that isn't a shot and won't make me sound too stupid with the bartender or make me look to stupid in front of you all, and is actually an enjoyable thing to drink. What is a reasonable, plain drink I can order? Something classic, sufficiently plain and with nothing sweet in it. What do all you experienced drinkers suggest?
2. My parents have a bunch of slide carousels and want to make space. Anyone convert slides to jpegs with a reasonable resolution? Did you use a service or buy a scanner? What service did you use? What level resolution should I insist upon?
Posted by: slopefarm at January 20, 2010 9:46 AM

"Schadenfreude is an ugly trait. Just sayin'."
Indeed arkady. Accompanied by very short memories, which includes no longer remembering just who and what got us here today. On the other hand, Those Dems who see this as the end are just as shortsighted, considering the majority they have in both houses and the White House. Now they just need balls to go along with it or we'll be back in a GOP cesspool again.
Posted by: bxgrl at January 20, 2010 9:51 AM
if you don't specify, they usually give you whatever house vodka they got but Grey Goose tastes soooo damn good in mixed drinks.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at January 20, 2010 9:51 AM
Too much sugar in cranberry juice, especially the crap that they use at bars.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 20, 2010 9:52 AM
To me, the vodka matters. Better quality = less hangover. As for which one to choose, I'm fine with stoli but also not a huge vodka drinker.
Posted by: jessibaby at January 20, 2010 9:53 AM
Pretend you're a man and order a scotch and soda or a bourbon & soda...none of this girly, Russian vodka shit.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at January 20, 2010 9:53 AM

DIBS, Etson and Legion;
Our work is never done, however.
While last night's upset was thrilling, at the same time, the Teacher's Union sock puppets, also known as our State Assembly, killed NY State's chance of receiving $700 million, yes $700 million, in federal aid that was conditioned on the expansion of the number of charter schools.
There are no words strong enough to express my contempt for the teacher's union and our State Assembly, especially that uber-slime-bucket, Sheldon Silver. Furthermore, I have special contempt for those assemblymen from poor minority districts who put their political interests (read: UFT) over the interests of the children in their district who are stuck in failing schools. The NY Post has an excellent picture today of the UFT's chief lobbyist, in full public view, sitting down with the Education Commissioner before the vote, and it is clear who is calling the shots. You think the NYT would publish such a photo? Not on your life.
Albany needs a Giuliani-type pit-bill to clean the place up. It is such a cess-pool of special interest potlitics, totally dominated by the civil-service unions who feed at the public trough.
Posted by: benson at January 20, 2010 9:54 AM
I agree with Dave and others who say the Dems got exactly what they deserved in Massachusetts (and, let me remind you, I'm a lifelong Democrat who has only voted for 2 Republicans for NYC Mayor). Martha Coakley slept through the campaign, arrogantly assuming the seat was hers for the taking, but not worthy of her asking for it. And since no one in the media will say it, let me: Scott Brown is hot. And that had to be worth a few points.
Dems have been overreaching just as the GOP did when it controlled Congress and the White House. Catering to the far left and letting Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid run the show was a huge mistake. I'm with the 60% of the country in the middle. Until the President and Congress start governing for silent majority in the middle, and not for the leftwingnuts or the rightwingnuts, the incumbents of both parties are going to continue to be voted out - so Republicans will be greatly misreading the election results if they think Brown's victory was an endorsement of their policies, or lack thereof.
Pass me a couple of teabags, Benson. ;-)

"DH, now you have done it! I'm taking you Vodka tasting next time and trust me, you'll taste the difference right away between the good ones and the cheap crap. "
I know, I know - but I'd hate to say after there isn't much difference between Smirnoff/Stoli and Grey Goose/Belvedere (except brand recognition and 20 bucks a bottle) - and unless people are drinking it warm, straight I guarantee the average person can't tell the difference.

Skinny Girl Margarita
2 oz of clear Tequila (Sauza or clear premium tequila)
(count 1, 2 while you pour, no need for measuring)
A splash of fresh lime juice
A splash of Grand Marnier or BOLS Triple Sec

Thanks for the advice all. Maybe I'll take dibs's advice and man up for a bourbon and soda, like my wife's aunt used to drink.
Meanwhile, my lessons from yesterday' results:
1. Obama and dems had a legislative strategy, but not a political strategy. They have ceded far too much political space to the opposition from day 1. Better they should learn this lesson (and I hope they do) with the loss of one seat than in a full mid-term election.
2. Candidates matter.
3. So do issues, and dems need to stop believing their own bs. They took their mandate for granted and thought they could pass health care reform without effectively communicating about it.

Anybody good at setting up routers? I bought a (Cisco) Linksys router and the setup looked easy using the CD that came with it. Unfortunately, I kept getting "error 321 - ethernet cable not connected" despite knowing all the cables were connected properly. Should I be daring and actually try to speak to a real person at the Linksys live chat line?

morning everyone. sad this morning re my home state. Guess i got owned by Legion- i did not see this coming, even tho he and Dick Morris tried to tell me. Leg and DIBS, at least you're happy. Bowlofdicks, i always knew you sucked- you must be from the east side. i *might* be able to see the PLUSA at the Exit Sign tomorrow- how late will y'all be staying?

Thanks M4L and Kens.
I'll try calling Linksys tech support. I have a brand new laptop and router, so it should be super easy to set up. But I did see that others have had issues with the setup CD.
I'm sure it'll work if I just tinker with it manually (TWSS).

Wow - lots of posts already this morning
what happened in Mass? UGH!!!! - am so sad for the dems up there!
Posted by: gemini10 at January 20, 2010 10:35 AM
All the Mass. special election proves is that the candidate, for whatever reason - personal flaws, bad campaign, sense of entitlement, whatever.....lost. All of you cracking open the champagne should get a grip. The Dems still have a 19 member majority in the Senate, and a huge majority in the House. Personally, I'm not happy with either governing body. The Dems need to grow a pair, collectively, and stand for something, instead of constantly putting their fingers to the wind. They also need to see the big picture above their own selfish interests, especially in the House.
The Repugs need to stop acting as if they don't live in the same country as the rest of us, and start representing the people, not their ideological philosophies. Since over a year has passed since the election, they've conveniently forgotten who got this country in the mess it's in, both internationally and domestically. Instead of working with Obama and the Dems to fix this mess, which affects ALL of us, they have acted like petulant children who would rather see their country fall into chaos and economic ruin, just so they can say, "told ya". Then when the Dems just go around them, they whine that no one is being bi-partisan. It's disgusting. On top of that, they have lost all focus, by letting their rabid, nutball, far right fringe define the party.
Personally, I'm tired of the whole bunch. I have a few words of advice for the president, but I'm still willing to give him a chance to work on a mess that's been a decade in the making, he's only had a year. I still have hope, and believe that he can still be one of the best presidents this country has ever had.

Chicken, I know, that's whay it's so frustrating. Should be just plugging it in, connecting the ethernet cable from the PC to the router and connect the router internet cable to the modem. I'll call them tonight. I can just return the modem and get a different brand if the tech support can't help.

It think once we start calling people "nutballs", "extremists" or "radicals" any chance of having a productive conversation is lost. Remember that at one time Gandhi, MLK and the Founders of the U.S were all called names like this.

Trouble-shooting mode:
Is the problem (1) connecting the computer to the router, or (2) the router to the internet, or (3) both?
You can check (2) in "admin" mode. Don't connect the router to the internet, just connect the laptop to the router.
Open a web-browser and type in the IP-address for the router (should be in your documentation). This should open a configuration page that you can play with the settings.

Yes, dibs, I"have a right to be effing mad at my party. They've blown it too many times. They just don't know how to play for keeps they way you guys do."
Totally agree, Slopey, and with your earlier post. It's amazing how the Dems constantly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I figured after 1993-1994, they actually would have learned something this time around. But, nope, that was too much to hope for.
And I agree with all the pundits who've been saying they did NOT explain their health care bill. I watch Morning Joe, NBC Nightly News and the PBS Newshour most days, and often have CNN on in the background, plus I read the Times, and I still have no clue what's in the health care bill. Except that Nebraska gets a pass on Medicare cost increases (or something to that effect) in exchange for Ben Nelson's vote and Mary Landrieu could be had for a mere $300 million.

That is not simply opposing his policies, that's believing the world is flat, and that qualifies as worthy of "nutball".

Kens, it's around 6.5 pounds. Actually got it at Staples...it was on the first page of the weekly ad in the weekend's NY Times.

The AMD is a tad slower than I would like because my work is so graphics heavy, and it's a 14 in screen (I have a second monitor to hook up- but acer hads a good rep and the laptop was on sale for 600$. MM, I agree with almost all of your 10:35 and 10:51 posts, except that I think the Massachusetts special election has far broader implications than just that the candidate lost. I believe voters are sending a message to Obama and Congressional Democrats, and they'd be wise to finally get it. (Also, I'm sorry but I'm not convinced Obama was born in the U.S.)

I think not letting your emotions interfere with the dialogue is important. So someone wants to see the president's birth certificate...that's that person's opinion. You know, when we were fighting the good fight against GW Bush, there were people at demonstrations during the Republican convention with hardcore Stalinist/Communist signs. I was still very much in favor of these people exercising their right to free speech and often agreed with them with some major points re: Bush's war-mongering. You will find that many that are part of this tea party movement besides hating Obama are also very anti-war.
I feel people need to work together on what they have in COMMON. The REAL conservative movement is calling Obama on his bombing brown people policy just like the REAL left is. Sometimes politics can make for strange bedfellows. In this corrupt two-party system,, I'm glad to have as many friends as possible.

Kens, my acer broke after 2.5 yrs and lucky I got the extended warranty (that extra $50 to buy it was wise in hindsight) which covered the replacement of the motherboard. From what I read, acer is very solid & reliable - ie mine was probably the exception vs. the norm. I would get an acer before considering a lenovo - ie I trust the Taiwanese (acer) more than the Chinese (lenovo) on build quality

M4L, I didn't mean they were tiny. I guess my choice of words was confusing. I meant more that they are up in coming in the sense they seem to be taking a lead technologically speaking in their products and seem to be starting to set the industry standard. At least according to my sis-in-law.

CGar - my family has had a w/e house in Hudson since '86 - way before the place got hot. But we still got the house. It sits abandoned now. so effing sad :-(
Posted by: bowl of dicks at January 20, 2010 11:34 AM
So Rob, is this a potential way around the new deck issue?
I buy a new deck and play around with them / shuffle them / build card houses/ etc but don't use them for reading. Then I give them to you after they are nicely scuffed up.
So they would be "used" but haven't been used for reading?

CarGar, considering the racial history in this country, not to mention the strong opposition of the Dem status quo to Obama's initial foray into presidential politics, and most especially, the vociferous opposition by all factions of the Republican party, I think the man's birth certificate, the Hawaii hospital records, hell, his astrological charts, have been the most scrutinized documents since the Magna Carta. If there had been any fudging or fooling around with the truth of his birth country, it would have been found a long time ago, probably by Democrats looking to avoid embarrassment to the party.
The birthers need to get over it. Oppose his policies if you want, it's a free country, but move on into reality. Obama was born in the USA, and is now the fairly, and freely elected president of this country.

Back at you, MM. LOL.
And, btw, I love the way you went back at me with such conviction when you thought I was serious! Did you happen to see Jon Stewart last year on the birthers? He was so funny. The gist of his spiel was that Obama's parents had the foresight to "plant" his birth announcement in the local Hawaii paper 48 years ago KNOWING that he would grow up to run for president.

Biff, Cobble, Snappy and I should all be there around 6pm. Everyone else trickles in after that. Some people arriving at 8pm, others not getting there until 10pm. No Exit reserved the back of the bar for us, so, as Kens first put it to me, just look for the group of people least likely to be seen in public together, congregating by the sofas in back. *rob* will be the guy in the Cheetah (sorry, Spotted Snow Leopard) coat doing tarot card readings.

DIBS, your panel molding question got me thinking "that's got to be the easiest and least expensive detail to put into a place which is missing pre-war details". a ton of no-detail pre-war aptmts would look great once these type of moldings are added back in. and am thinking one doesn't have to fine someone super skilled to install it - just some good math & measuring skills so they can center them properly on the calls, etc.
Posted by: more4less at January 20, 2010 12:34 PM
I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel - my entire computer crashed. I had to use the restore disc, which wiped out all of my programs and files. When it was done, the only icons on my desktop were for internet explorer and Adobe reader, so I could read internet explorer. And I had WIN XP, but no Office. I had to re-install Office, Corel, Illustrator, Norton, Quickbooks, Firefox, etc, etc. It's taken 2 days. Fortunately, I have an on-line backup, and all of my files are now being downloaded back into my computer, and I didn't lose a thing. The best $55 I ever spent. If I had lost all of my docs, and photos, I'd be headed to jump off the nearest bridge.

"he was standing right there, how do you let him flee???"
Dave, this is like the guy who shut down Newark for 6 hours a couple of weeks ago. The TSA agents and guards saw that he kept trying to get around the rope barricade. They were watching him. They had him. So why didn't they do something to PREVENT what they saw coming, rather than apprehend him after he did exactly what they thought he was going to do.

MM - What on-line backup do you use?
Posted by: Arkady at January 20, 2010 12:40 PM
I don't remember that, CarGar, but my heart sank when I saw today's little joke. "How could I have so misjudged the man?" I asked myself. "I'd thought he was a reasonable human being."

We need passengers like those in Glasgow Airport when the guys drove the burning car through the front windows a couple of years back.
Couple of Glaswegians that had been in the check in line dragged the terrorist out of the car while he was still on fire and started beating the crap out of him.
Posted by: etson at January 20, 2010 12:42 PM
montrose, is the $55 a 1-time or annual fee for the back-up?
I know what you mean. F'ing Acer probably used the recovery disc on my hard-drive too when I specifically told them it's the f'ing mother-board so please check & replace the motherboard before you go wipe out my hard drive for no reason. a good chunk of the software was stuff I installed directly via the internet so re-installing some of the programs were a bitch. Had to ask my buddies for their dvd's. am still missing some software - luckily I dont miss those that much else I would be in steaming still

The far left just lacks humor, CGar.
Posted by: etson at January 20, 2010 12:43 PM
Arcady, Carbonite. It's great. It backs up not only the obvious files, but also your favorites and bookmarks, and anything else you want to keep. The program puts a little green dot next to the desktop and file folder icons when that file is backed up. If it's new and hasn't been backed up (which goes on in the background while your computer is in use, and you're connected to the internet) the dot is yellow. It backs up pretty quickly, too.

Benson, glad you are around and you are welcome to crank some Bruce around here any time, in my view. In your absence, DIBS revealed himself (ahem) to be a fan of the early Boss catalogue. And of course, only on the OT do I have to think about rewrite potential before commenting on The Rising.

Posted by: Montrose Morris at January 20, 2010 12:46 PM
was hoping it wasn't. I like that automated back-up approach cause I'm lazy but the tight-wallet me is finding the portable external harddrive the more budget friendly approach for now.
Posted by: more4less at January 20, 2010 12:53 PM
I'll manage, Biff. Don't think there are too many revolutionaries on the team.
Plus Canada has a Conservative govt now & the US doesn't.
I did laugh when I decided to move. Remembered lots of articles in the 2004 election with assorted dickheads threatening to move to Canada if Bush got in again, b/c they would be 'so ashamed' of the US etc. Thinking I should tell people I did the reverse. That should go down well..
Posted by: etson at January 20, 2010 12:57 PM
M4L, I have my photos and docs backed up on an external, as well. The only problem is that it's not an auto backup that adds to, or changes existing files, so I have to replace whole files, especially in the photos, with the updated ones, which takes time. If this was my only back up, I would have lost a lot of data. My livelihood is on my computer, so the money is worth it to me. I fully understand your position, however.

Posted by: Arkady at January 20, 2010 1:02 PM
MM, on-line back also has 1 big advantage in that if a fire or water disaster happens, data still good vs the external drive might've been destroyed too. my only concern with on-line option is their business going-concern (ie don't want to be f'd if that biz goes bankrupt). Hence why I've thinking about the on-line option too

About Millionaire Matchmaker- All I can say is thank god that old tart lost the little girl bangs. None, other than seeing the Queen on the money.
Also, re Canadians & drinking. Thought there would be more pubs in Toronto (& what there were seemed to be owned by chains). Maybe I went to the wrong parts so far or I am just spolied by having lived in the UK and NYC.

Etson, that must have been why I saw people passed out in their own vomit in the gutters in front of pubs in Camden Yards on Friday and Saturday nights. I've never seen such binge drinking in my life, and I went to a college that has produced some serious alcoholic over-achievers.

Completely true and I'm also shocked every time I go back to see the incredible numbers of Asian there now...in ALL neighbourhoods. While New York may have a higher absolute number, I'm certain the percentage of Asians of the total population is way higher than anywhere else outside of Asia (and outside of Vancouver). DIBS would be in heaven!
Posted by: Biff Champion at January 20, 2010 1:22 PM
Montrose, Most pubs used to close at 11pm so everyone would go straight from work, assuming they made it back from lunch!
It was technically possible to do an all-nighter even then though. Some pubs had late licenses, then clubs were open till 2 or 4. Then some of the pubs near Smithfield meat market opened in the early am because of the porters' shifts.
I did all elements of this at different times but never the whole thing all the way through.

Is there a day that goes by without a Driving Rant from me?
So why should today be any different!
Driving Rant:
I was driving down 4th Ave when a woman pushing a baby carriage dashes across the avenue. I had to press on the breaks so hard.
Why are people so careless?!?!?! Why not wait for the light to cross? Why would you jeopardize your life and run across a 4-lane avenue with cars whizzing by at 30+ mph. More importantly, why would you jeopardize the life of a child.
It really pissed me off that this women is so callous toward the safety of a child.

Expert, that's because the PS stroller culture think they have right of way at all times "out of my way! Kid coming through!"
I can't tell you how many times I walk down a sidewalk and I come across a stroller with both parents and they expect me to walk around them on the street. It's so effing annoying.

I think he needs to get out there better, not more. Opposition has done a far better job shaping the news cycle and managing public impressions of news events than administration has. Obama's team is just not aggressive enough in that area.
jester -- you are right, which is why I posted above that candidates matter. The election certainly has national policy and strategic implications but it was also about the candidates. She was truly awful.

(Life is very short and there's no time for fussing my fighting my friend.)
on 101.1 - Queen: Another One Bites the Dust

(How do you think I'm going to get along,
Without you, when you're gone
You took me for everything that I had,
And kicked me out on my own
Are you happy, are you satisfied
How long can you stand the heat)
on 106.7 - Don't Go Breaking my Heart

All I can think is 'how efing apropos!'

Jessi;
Oh,ok. For some reason, I'm not on President Obama's mailing list ;-)
ET;
In fairness to that woman: I live right near 4th Ave, and I know why this happens. The lights (at least near 3rd St. and 4th Ave) do not allow one enough time to cross the Ave. I'm a pretty fast walker, and even I have trouble getting across 4th Ave in the time alloted. So I and many others do it in two steps. First, cross to the meridian, ahead of the light. Then, when the light changes, complete the journey.

Posted by: Butterfly at January 20, 2010 2:44 PM
No, jessi, I don't, thank goodness. I block as much of that stuff as I can.
I think he needs to get back to old fashioned presidential politicing - getting out there, especially in areas that are in great need, and pressing the flesh, going to town hall meetings, and meeting people. Of course that doesn't give someone a job, or put food on their table, but it still is a great symbolic gesture, and good pr. Part of his "problem" is perception. He is a wonk and a workaholic. He is in the situation room working to solve these problems, but no one sees that. One of the successful things about Reagan was his personableness, he was always PERCEIVED to be one of the people. (Real or faux, all good politicians and leaders have to at least appear real folks, and then deliver on that perception, but that's another long drawn out discussion) Obama needs to be just as cerebral, but also accessible.
The cynic in me has snarky remarks at the ready with the best of them, but the realist in me realizes that HOW you do something in politics is almost as important as WHAT you do. That's why standing in a flight suit in front of a "mission accomplished" banner was a strong image, too bad wrong mission, wrong time, and mission not accomplished. It backfired big time. It COULD have been the defining moment of Bush's legacy for the right reasons, not the wrong ones.

Benson, I'm sorry, but I totally don't see it from your viewpoint and WILL NOT give this woman any 'fairness', regardless of the 'lights'.
She is responsible for the safety of that child; whether her own or someone else's. In my eyes there is NO excuse as to her running across an avenue, which btw is a highway alternate; cars are driving on it at 30, 40, 50 miles an hour. I wasn't the only car on the road or the only one that had to break suddenly.
If she can run across while the light is red, then she can run across while the light is green. If the light changes before she makes it across at least the cars are stopped.

Slopey, you are correct. Better is better. More often, maybe not so much, if it is meaningless. You phrased that better than I did in the post I just wrote before reading yours.

I still get John McCain e-mails, but not Sarah Palin ones strangely enough. I guess he got the mailing list in the divorce.
Also get a bunch of stuff though the mail. Even when I agree with it, it's pretty painful to read.
The McCain e-mails still include the phrase 'my friends' a lot, which looks even more weird in print than it sounds in a speech.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at January 20, 2010 3:18 PM
lol,
ok, here's the low down (so to speak);
the ob/gyn clinic next door got a truck load of the
ubiquitous NYC (subway font) condoms, you know, the ones they keep around doctor's offices in a candy dish.
Too many to handle, so they basically don't know what to do with them all.
They come individually wrapped in packages of about 300 with a plastic wrapping around that, so they're totally sealed. However, they have been outside in sub freezing temperatures (so aside from shrinkage issues) I don't know what effect that would have on their elasticity.
Anyway, they could be used instead of glitter, less of a mess, but more to explain at home when you come back from a brownstoner gathering with condoms falling out of your briefcase.

"2. My parents have a bunch of slide carousels and want to make space. Anyone convert slides to jpegs with a reasonable resolution? Did you use a service or buy a scanner? What service did you use? What level resolution should I insist upon?"
I actually just finished a similar project. I scanned all my old negs (my serious color work is on slides, but a lot of old family parties and what not). I used a flatbed to do around 8000 images in a fairly automated process using Adobe Lightroom, at lo rez. Then I re-scanned a coupla hundred using a film scanner. I gave out some really nice surprises for Christmas (mostly to nieces and cousins who didn't know their parents were 'hot' before the kids came along). The project took four months of spare hours.
To get really good scans from slides, you need a dedicated film scanner, and they are slow. You _can_ get decent scans from a really good flatbed, the only one I would recommend right now would be the Epson 750.
The real question to ask is what will be the final use. That would determine what rez you will need. IOW, will they be making 11x14 prints from any? Or do they just want lo-rez images for the web?
Frankly if they don't have a lot of imaging software or experience with it, and plans to buy all this hardware, they'd be better off with a service.
Scanning the images at 1000ppi on the long side will allow you to make 8x10 images at 300ppi.
There are a lot of services out there that do this stuff but unfortunately I'm not familiar with names.
ANother suggestion, if they are all in carousels and they are just looking for room is to take them out of the carousels and put them in slide pages which take up a lot less room.

"Can we have a secret "coming out of the closet" day for 'Stoner liberals who want to admit that they're really a conservative?"
benson, in some areas I'm actually farther to the right than conservatives. I generally vote Libertarian when I can afford to let my vote go. Libertarians are actually the only consistent political philosophy, when you think about it. And I don't mean a phony Libertarian like Ron Paul.
Under a libertarian guvment, the whole social/religious mess is done and over. A woman has the right to choose what she does with her body, and what she does with it would be btw her and her doctor. It would be quite possible to see gay marriage, as a libertarian guvment wouldn't interfere with a contract btw two people. Cartainly the guvment wouldn't interfere with what two or more people do in the bedroom.
Under a libertarian guvment, we would pull all our troops from overseas unless they are needed for direct defense of the homeland. And that would be _direct_ defense. We wouldn't be at war with the Arab world, we'd just buy their oil and live in peace like the Scandinavian countries do. We wouldn't be pouring money into Israel and selling them weapons, so that would remove another huge flashpoint.
This alone would practically balance the budget.
Of course that leaves many issues, such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, environmental issues, and so on.
Let's see how many closet Libertarians there are out there!

Posted by: denton at January 20, 2010 4:53 PM
'slumpy' = schlumpy
I had a bear named "Schlumpy" when I was very little. That bear was smeared with food - I distinctly remember him smelling like Funny Bones - and threadbare and torn. Our housekeeper patched and patched and patched him. Toward the end of his life, I'm quite certain he was more patch than bear. So, my parents went to Europe in 1966, and this woman who had been my baby nurse stayed with us because our housekeeper, a real member of the family for 18 years, didn't drive. The baby nurse decided she knew what was best for me, and she threw Schlumpy in the garbage. Our housekeeper retrieved him. On our housekeeper's day off - Thursday, garbage day as it happened - the baby nurse again threw Schlumpy in the trash and made sure that "the trashmen" carted him away. Way to traumatize a 2 year old.

Yes Rob, that's it!!! BH & BR are connected culturally.
Posted by: Expert Textpert at January 20, 2010 4:56 PM
Thanks, denton,
I think the idea is both to save space and get lots of family pix out to the family. My dad took mostly slides so I have almost no photos from my childhood (maybe that's a good thing). So the idea is decent enough resolution for up to 8x10 prints, although mostly 4x6, and perhaps my dad may replace the old slide projector with a digital projector for both photos and dvds, so we would want resolution for that. I think a service probably makes more sense; otherwise it will never get done.

I will not be doing any punching by my goat was trained to attack any hipster he sees and he'll be coming along with me tomorrow. That reminds me, are there any polls next to Last Exit to tie my goat to or I might end up leaving abruptly.

cgar -- I won't send them to your brother then. I think a service is the way to go. But 4 carousels at perhaps $.40/slide will be costly for you.

Expert, I'm not worried about cigars...it's the crack pipes that scare me! Can you imagine a kitten high on crack? Yikes! This little boy barely rests as it is. If he starts getting high, I'll come home one day to find all my electronics gone and him bargaining with a skinny hipster trying to trade in my toaster oven for just one more hit!

re: the hair smelling...
it's the oldest trick in the book (well my book anyway, have no clue if other clairvoyants do it..) you see someone, smell their hair without them knowing, then later on go up to them and ask if they'd like a psychic reading. before even getting 'that' close, you have something to open with. damn girl, is that Pantene Pro Vitamin? JK it really only hit me now that the hair smelling thing could totally work in a reading. honestly i am not sure why i wanted to sniff peoples' hair at place. i do hope that doesnt deter newbies from coming to any new events.
re: my college degree.. MIT in Physics? okay we can pretend i have that :) that's sexy as hell! sadly, i only have a degree from Rutgers U. in Jersey in psychology and visual arts. even sadlier, i lost it. i probably threw it out at some point not realizing where it was. i cant stand too much clutter and every few years i have a lil fit where i throw literally EVERYTHING out and start afresh. think the show Hoarders, but without the crying and histrionics. i can bring my high school year book tho. youll die laughing knowing what i won in the senior year polls :-/
it just occurred to me that there is a 5 percent chance this psot will go thru. i cant cut and paste on this computer and i just got on at home grrrr it always makes me log back in!

Yay Massachusetts!
I was born in Massachusetts and lived there until I was 15. There is a cemetary in a tiny backwoods town of Western Massachusetts where my father's father, his father, his father, his father, his father, his father, his father and his father are all buried. I think back to the 1600s or so. I went to UMASS for undergrad. So did both of my parents, one of my brothers, an uncle and a couple of sisters. Went to law school in Boston. I am, through and through, a Masshole. And today, I am very proud of it.

i'm not sure about the specifics - but you can get shit E tabs for 15 bucks a pop - and handfilled mdma caps are like 30 - 40 bucks each.
everything feels AMAZING!!
yeah - i'll be there.

[serious question] why dont people take over half developed condos (they are ALL over Brooklyn) and just have fun in them? some of them are so deep no one in a block's radius would even hear anything. organize! organize. ORGANIZE!

Good evening everyone!
DJ Snappy is wiped out (very little sleep in the past 24 hours) and taking a sick day today. But, I see that Jessi held it down for me. America and CSNY are among my favorites! America's version of "Muskrat Love" and CSNY's "Helplessly Hoping" barely play on my cd anymore because I've worn them out! Ahhh, good music.
And now, I shall try to get some zzz's. See you all tomorrow at the Left Turn Off Ramp :-)
**DJ Snappy has left the building**

i like that - organize raves at stalled condo developments.
i mean, they already have them at abandoned warehouses, but abandoned condos would probably get a post by Mr. B and get all the Frownstoners riled up.

me and my friend Krazey hung out in one a few weeks ago and it was fun. you just lift up the fence (it's not hard to do). you walk in and there is a big bunch of fake steps. then you can just walk around. it's all concrete and lots of garbage basically. i mean if i had to squat...

what's the address Rob?
I'm gonna start passing out fliers and free metrocards to all the junkies near our office touting it as a free place for junkies to 'unwind'
