McDonald's on Tillary Closes!

mcdonalds-tillary-012910.jpg
We received word through a tipster yesterday that the McDonald's at 169 Tillary Street, a long-time fixture in Downtown Brooklyn, had closed. Sure enough, that was the case when we went by this morning. According to signs up in the windows, the fast food giant lost its lease after, we're guessing, 20 years. The property does not appear to have changed hands recently nor have any new building permits been applied for. Anyone know what the plan is? Is the demise of McD's good news or bad news for BKLYN Gold marketing efforts? GMAP

I wish the McDonald's near me (4th Ave and 1st Street) would close, for no other reason than its patrons seem to be the source of half the litter in front of my house each morning.

By chrishavens on January 29, 2010 9:31 AM

FLATTERY coming into it's own! means development....

By Beau Guest on January 29, 2010 9:33 AM

I thought someone bought this plot of land back at the height of the boom. I have heard it was supposed to be replaced with another condo for years now.

By KHuebbe on January 29, 2010 9:33 AM

Good news.

By Petebklyn on January 29, 2010 9:34 AM

where will Mr. B get breakfast now?

By Butterfly on January 29, 2010 9:42 AM

benson, yeah... that mcdonalds is cool tho. i hardly ever go there, but i like it. but the patrons in that mcdonalds really ARE litterbugs, but most mcdonald patrons in all the mddonalds are.

By Brokedeveloper on January 29, 2010 9:42 AM

I heard it is being replaced by a McDowall's.

By albemarle on January 29, 2010 9:46 AM

The "Golden Arches" aren't the kind of bling "BKLYN Gold" is looking for, I guess.

By fsrg on January 29, 2010 9:51 AM

Benson - I'd take the litter for the convenience of getting an easy McDs fix....but the problem with that McDonalds is that it gets robbed like every other month (seems a bit better the last yr or so) and I walk by it so much I know its only a matter of time before I get caught in the "action"

By Ringo on January 29, 2010 10:02 AM

how many times did I stop at that McDonalds before getting onto the BQE for a trip to the beach or up 95? a bazillion? and how many times did I wait 25 minutes for a cup of coffee that was undrinkable? every damn time. that place made me feel like a moron for giving them one more shot over and over again.

By denton on January 29, 2010 10:11 AM

Now THAT'S what I call gentrification!!!

By nise17 on January 29, 2010 10:13 AM

RAMBO, not Flattery chrishavens.

By mopar on January 29, 2010 10:17 AM

I wonder if the McDonalds marketers have compiled a profile of their typical customer through focus groups: Likes to litter, rob fast food places, drive...

By benson on January 29, 2010 10:17 AM

FSRG;

Believe it or not, in the 5 years I've lived in the area, I've never tried that Mickey D's (even though McDonald's is my favorite fast-food burger joint). The reason is that about 15 years ago I was driving back from Manhattan after visiting my wife in the hospital. I was hungry and so stopped there for a meal. It was the single worst food experience I've ever had in my life.

Perhaps they've improved since then, but I was never tempted to find out.

By Butterfly on January 29, 2010 10:22 AM

im not a snobby fast food hater at all, but i will have to admit anytime ive ever eaten mcdonalds i felt really really gross afterwards. not like sick gross, but just like totally icky inside? does that make any sense? and it's not like i even ate anything more than a dollar cheeseburger and some fries.

I work near Tillary St. and was wondering who patronized this place, as there is a McD's on Court St. I believe. Ringo's anecdote about car traffic using this place answered my question, and I wonder how it could have lasted on that as I observe (unscientifically of course) that the Court St. place is much preferred.

By IMBY on January 29, 2010 10:25 AM

That explains why this morning while waiting to cross the Manhattan Bridge, a disheveled down and out Ronald McDonald squeegeed my windshield for a quarter.

By daveinbedstuy on January 29, 2010 10:30 AM

Without any further information this sounds like a really, really stupid landlord!!!!

By tekniskakustik on January 29, 2010 10:37 AM

Someone is now going to have to edit the wikipedia article on RAMBO:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAMBO,_Brooklyn

"The only eatery in RAMBO is a 24-hour McDonald's. RAMBO used to be part of Vinegar Hill until the 1950s, when the construction of the BQE effectively isolated it from surrounding areas."

By Petebklyn on January 29, 2010 10:40 AM

sounds like someone thinks it is time to develop this site(large) that is way underutilized.

By TaoKai on January 29, 2010 10:42 AM

I think its fantastic news! Hoping they all start closing down soon.

By denton on January 29, 2010 10:45 AM

"i felt really really gross afterwards. not like sick gross, but just like totally icky inside? does that make any sense?"

rob, I get the same chemical feeling.

By fsrg on January 29, 2010 10:48 AM

DIBS - it is very possible that the LL is McDonalds Corp....they often buy the land and lease the store to the franchisee..I think Pete from Brooklyn has it right - development time

By 11217 on January 29, 2010 11:20 AM

Bring in a waffle house! :)

By gemini10 on January 29, 2010 11:23 AM

strange!
i mean when does a McDonald's EVER close?

MCD's on 4th and 1st - yikes - the patrons are these little skate kids who throw their happy meal burger wrappers all over the place while causing havoc using the parking lot as their own Tony Hawke practice ramp!

By the chicken on January 29, 2010 11:26 AM

McDonalds Corp has determined that this is a gentification candidate area and, as such, is suitable for the installation of the next generation of "Luxury McDonalds"

By hermanjoshua on January 29, 2010 11:29 AM

HA. There used to be noplace around there to eat except for the McDonalds, and now there isn't even a McDonalds. Glad I don't live up there anymore.

By daveinbedstuy on January 29, 2010 11:35 AM

I just heard that it's going to be an Arby's

By etson on January 29, 2010 11:48 AM

"Bring in a waffle house! :)"

I would be there every chance I got. Waffle House is the best.

By 11217 on January 29, 2010 12:06 PM

Etson,

There are a couple things I'd bet my testicles on with regard to money makers in Brooklyn:

1. A waffle house (pretty much anywhere in BK) and
2. A trader Joe's in Park Slope

Both are potential goldmines.

By TaoKai on January 29, 2010 12:14 PM

I think its great news! I hope they all start closing down. Bring on healthy alternatives - actual real healthy food instead of the poison they serve up!

By gemini10 on January 29, 2010 12:31 PM

why a waffle house?

By etson on January 29, 2010 12:37 PM

because waffle house is awesome and delicious.

By Legion on January 29, 2010 12:37 PM

11217,

...the image of testicles and a waffle iron is making me cringe here!

The McDonald's on Atlantic and Logan (I think) in East New York used to have a bullet proof glass wall at the front counter. This was in the 1980's-early 90's. I kid you not. haven't seen that in a McD's since.

By dirty_hipster on January 29, 2010 12:37 PM

in and out burger please

By dirty_hipster on January 29, 2010 12:38 PM

a bar in an old mcdonalds would be hilarious too

By Lesloaf on January 29, 2010 12:40 PM

Anyone looking for food on Tillary near the BQE entrance should check out the Loading Dock (right across the street from the closed McD's). AMAZING tacos and burritos, in an art gallery with fireplaces. It's off the beaten track, but very well worth it.

before eating at McDonalds think about the corporate mutant cow bred to produce $1 meals. sick and sad.

What happened to the McRib??

Posted by: dirty_hipster at January 29, 2010 12:55 PM

dirty hipster,

the McRib went the same way as Olestra Lay's potato chips,

into the annals of gastrointestinal medicine and research as examples of the durability and industructable nature of the human alimentary tract.

By dirty_hipster on January 29, 2010 1:17 PM

booo legion - those things ruled!!

By Legion on January 29, 2010 1:32 PM

dirty hipster,

...lol, hey, I didn't say I wasn't scarfing them down also, I think the 99cent menu is one of man's greatest inventions!
Remember, I'm the one who eats at White Castle regularly.

I always thought Roscoe's East shouldve been Downtown instead of in Flatbush...now it's gone. Does anybody remember Roscos'e Chicken & Waffles? It's a transplant from LA.

i like the bar idea, where very little is changes in the interior/exterior, and the bartenders are all dressed like scary clowns

By Nokilissa on January 29, 2010 3:50 PM

MMMMmmmmmmmm...okay. I'll dive in.

Haven't eaten at a McDonald's since my mid twenties and truthfully, haven't wanted to. Except perhaps the french fries, which are awesome. But I'm a cake-y vanilla person much more than a grease-y salty person, so when I indulge, it ain't there. But I digress.

Rob, and anyone who might be wondering why it is that McDonald's leaves one feeling mildly ill, bloated and greasy, should watch Morgan Spurlock's take/experience on the place in Super Size Me. FanTAStic train wreck of an experiment that could have killed him. Watch it.

By iluvclintonhill on January 29, 2010 3:52 PM

I worked across the street at Metro and knew over 2 years ago that this was closing to make way for what else...condos or rentals. One of the Mcd's managers was in a new employees training class and clued us in.

By DitmasSnark on January 29, 2010 5:08 PM
