I got a regular flu shot yesterday and I'm all achey today.

If the unfortunately violence really *can* be linked to that chain restaurant's promotion/lack of crowd control, does that help illustrate one of the hidden costs of the mall and these big chains? From what I've heard, the local police now have to spend a big part of their time covering the mall area. If anything, I certainly hope they have been able to have their budget and employee numbers raised substantially to take on the new burden. It would be the only fair thing for the 88th Precinct staff and the residents who live within the precinct.

Sorry, "unfortunate violence". Typing to fast!

By BrooklynGreene on November 12, 2009 8:47 AM

Typing "too" fast!!!

I hope everyone has a good day!

"In a statement on Wednesday, Councilwoman Letitia James of Brooklyn criticized the restaurant for its “poor planning” and management of the event."

That's a stolid statement.
Just catching up on this story and I can't believe that many are pinning the blame on the restaurant.
There are lots of sales/promotions that attract thousands of people at one time and few incidents happen at them.
Don't blame the establishment for conducting a sale, put the blame on the perpetrators of the crimes.

By dittoburg on November 12, 2009 9:12 AM

"put the blame on the perpetrators of the crimes"

No no, pass the buck to society in general.

By Brenda from Flatbush on November 12, 2009 9:15 AM

Yes, I'm afraid I had the same reaction to the sagacious Councilwoman's statement. Kids shoot each other over chicken wings, and the problem is "poor planning"? It may indeed be poor planning to promote any event that would draw these "yoots" (as My Cousin Vinnie says) to that horrible pseudo-mall, but the problem runs a tad deeper, no? Next time, perhaps the chain should advertise a special on broccoli and Beethoven.

By daveinbedstuy on November 12, 2009 9:15 AM

I blame it on Nintendo, MTV and the Internet.

Well society does rear criminals :-)

By Tara in the Slope on November 12, 2009 9:22 AM

"Kids shoot each other over chicken wings"

Maybe I missed this, but where in the article does it say that the shootings and stabbing were over chicken wings? Are there other articles that state this as a fact?

By daveinbedstuy on November 12, 2009 9:24 AM

I think it was over the sauce not the wings themselves, Tara.

Doesn't God make everything? Its her fault really.

By daveinbedstuy on November 12, 2009 9:27 AM

I think a lot of them were agnostics, ditto. There were also a few atheists. Probably more after the shootings.

By Tara in the Slope on November 12, 2009 9:28 AM

"I think it was over the sauce not the wings themselves, Tara."

Now it makes sense. One or two packets of sauce that they give you are never enough!

By dittoburg on November 12, 2009 9:30 AM

If we decriminalized stabbings this wouldn't be a crime.

By Butterfly on November 12, 2009 9:36 AM

what boggled my mind was the notion that 40 cents is cheap for a teeny tiny chicken wing. wtf? im sorry, but ounce for ounce that is not cheap at all. in fact it's rather expensive. another thing, chickens seem pretty large to me, but chicken wings like the one in this story are very small, like smaller than canary wings. do they shrink in the oven or something? i had chicken wings for the first time ever on my 29th birthday party at hooters (shut up) a few years ago, and they had a nice flavor but really they were kinda disgusting and there's like not much meat on them and the meat that is on them is like all grey and rubbery.

The business (or businesses) to bear some responsibility in how they conduct their promotions. Was Walmart not partly responsible for the trampling death on day after Thanksgiving. Are the big night clubs that attract large crowds and disperse them intoxicated into our streets at night partly liable for effect on neighboring communities.
I don't know facts of this event - but to blanketly say totally not their problem or responsibility is incorrect.

By northsloperenter on November 12, 2009 9:39 AM

So, is all the focus on the chicken wings (official and blogish) because people just don't want to think about teenagers trying to kill each other on a pleasant November afternoon?

By dittoburg on November 12, 2009 9:42 AM

"because people just don't want to think about teenagers trying to kill each other on a pleasant November afternoon?"

That discussion invariably leads to unfounded charges of racism and actual racism, so polite company avoids it like the plague.

personally i don't give a chicken's ass if stupid teenagers kill each other. is it sad? yes. do i feel bad for the families? yes. would i be upset if i got hit with a stray bullet? probably. i think this whole story is getting way too much attention, things like this happen every day, in every city.

You're not going to like me for this but oftentimes these sort of things fit well with Darwin's Laws.

"That discussion invariably leads to unfounded charges of racism and actual racism, so polite company avoids it like the plague."

Yes, I suppose that's it.

I wonder how responsible that is for the intractability of some of the problems faced by poor, non-white, inner city populations. If you can't even talk about it honestly, you can't do much to fix it.

Reminds me sadly of how the radical israelis and palestinians have so successfully prevented any sane solution to their problems.

By Sparafucile on November 12, 2009 10:04 AM

This is the first I've heard that BWW was actually marketing this promotion to high school and middle school students. This seems inappropriate for an establishment that, whether you call it a restaurant or a bar, serves alcohol, and a lot of it. I'm surprised unsupervised minors would even be allowed in. Although come to think of it, when my daughter was in middle school she went to someplace similar in Sheepshead Bay (TGIF maybe?) for a friend's birthday and I'm pretty sure there was no parental supervision, given that they also went to see Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

By Butterfly on November 12, 2009 10:04 AM

if they have children tho dave, then darwin's law doesnt apply dave.

"You're not going to like me for this but oftentimes these sort of things fit well with Darwin's Laws."

dave -- your understanding of dawrin's laws are pretty bad if you think this.

Check out population growth rates in the communities you are thinking about and then compare them to population growth rates in other communities that you think are on the other end of your 'darwin' spectrum.

The analogy fails.

By northsloperenter on November 12, 2009 10:08 AM

Oh, and if you want to follow a darwinian path, I'm pretty sure it ends up with the masses rising up and killing the property owners (or at least seizing their property and sending them off to re-education camps somewhere).

By daveinbedstuy on November 12, 2009 10:09 AM

I was thinking more along the lines of The Darwin Awards, nsr. The Laws of Darwin are quite broad in scope. this pertains to just a specific part of them.

By daveinbedstuy on November 12, 2009 10:13 AM

nsr, remember my post from yesterday. I have firearms.

By East New York on November 12, 2009 10:14 AM

Those are some troublesome wings!

By northsloperenter on November 12, 2009 10:19 AM

dave -- Darwin Awards are for people who get themselves killed doing something stupid. I suppose if you want to count "being a teenager in NYC" as something stupid, you can.

Your firearms will stop the first 2 or 3 (assuming you are a alert at the precise moment you need to be). After that, you might have trouble.

But, anyway, I can see we would all rather joke about wings.

By BrooklynGreene on November 12, 2009 2:17 PM

I guess the above comments illuminate some of the reasons why we have problems in our society.

By The Who on November 12, 2009 4:11 PM

They were beating people to death in Bensonhurst long before mall sponsored chicken wings.

Brooklyn is beginning to look like tight packing on a merchant ship. There simply isn't enough room for all these temperments to exist.

There is more to come. When all the construction projects are complete...and the beloved Arena is here!

By Big Jugs on November 12, 2009 6:26 PM

Tara, that's how Tish operates. When it comes to anyone classified as "oppressed" she blames society and nothing else. She is not capable of rational thought in those instances.

I still can't get past the Miss G Train Beauty pageant. I can't say as I have ever seen too many beauties on the G.
