Tavern on Nostrand RIP

813-Nostrand-1109.jpg
While the menu change at 813 Nostrand Avenue actually happened last month, the transition from Tavern on Nostrand to Crow Hill Bistro was made official yesterday with the changing of the signage. GMAP

Does anyone know why they changed the name??? Seems like a stupid waste of money to me.

Food though is better than the previous owner. I was there (with some other PLUSAs) during the Crown heights House Tour

The big photo above does say "Tavern on Nostrand" -- just sayin'

I second, Dave. I've had 2 great meals there (both times with a group of PLUSAs) since the new owners took over. The food was great, as was the service - the people who work there could not have been nicer or more attentive.

tybur - I think the photo on the left shows the old sign being taken down.

They now have a new owner. The pervious owner sold it a few months back along with the pizza shop across the street from it.

Once upon a time this section of Brooklyn was known as Crow Hill...I believe that's where they got the name from.

Nice to hear that the food has improved.

C-Gar... it was a correction directed to Mr. B, but he just changed his original text, "Tavern on Dean," to read "Tavern on Nostrand." So I look like a dummy making random comments. It's a subversive conspiracy to cause me shame.

LOL, tybur. Not at all. And I was just tryin' to be helpful.

There's a pretty interesting thread on the shenanigans of the previous owner over at Brooklynian. Given the information that's there it seems like a smart move to separate completely from the old owner and make a fresh start.

Changing the name had to do with the previous owner causing problems. The lawyers thought it was better to change the name and completely disassociate from him.

MM and I know the new owners (there are 2 couples), and the food is great.

The new owners wanted a fresh start - new management, new menu, new name. Why inherit the mistakes of the past, as well as any old liabilities, unknown debt, whatever, that you had nothing to do with?

I know the two couples who own the Bistro, they are all great people who were able to put their money where their mouths were, in terms of improving the neighborhood and providing needed amenities. I wish them the best of success, and will patronize their establishment as much as possible.

bxgrl...lol.

The old owner was a colorful character so I'm not surprised!

The old owner lives in my neighborhood. I know all about his past. That said, he does good work an opens nice restaurants and I wish him luck with the place in bed Stuy. It will be nice once he gets it together.

CHL- he was more than that- and I don't mean that in a good way. He seems insistent on being a thorn in their side too. Eventually he'll jsut go away- or be led away :)

bxgirl...

I wonder why? Why sell a place if you're unwilling to let go of it?

Do the new owners have live music from time to time too?

Posted by: A CrownHeightsLady at November 3, 2009 11:43 AM

He was a jackass, good riddance.

Well, I wish the new owners the best. We need more good businesses in the area.

Hubby & I had a really nice meal there a few weeks ago after the Crown Heights House Tour.

The owner told us he'd bought the assets of the place, but the deal did not include the name so they had to change it.

I hope they do well. We plan to go back as often as we can.

The pasta primavera is chock full of fresh, crisp veggies, and the fried chicken is tasty and moist--with great mac n cheese on the side.

My gf and I are making it our weekend hangout.
