Streetlevel: Vinnie's Styles Opening New Store on Flatbush

Vinnie's Styles, maker of hip-hop and Brooklyn-themed apparel, is in the process of building out a new double-wide storefront at 239 Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Heights. If the Nets arena does ever get built, this location will look like a pretty smart choice. GMAP

Just in case you're curious, this is where the former Salvation Army was...

A guy named Vinnie does hip hop gear? Who woulda thunk it?

I'm sorry, I thought the line was "this will be worthless once AY is built". When did that change to "this will be worth MORE once AY is built"?

BKRE:
I've always been under the impression that people think housing values may decline, but retail around the area would increase. That only makes sense, right?
This is very close to AY and probably will do just fine even without it, but might be a gold mine if/when it gets built.

"Vinnie" refers to their grandfather who owned a gentleman's clothing store a long long time ago. I think they inherited the business and contemporized it. I beleive they are the ones responsible for that script tilted "Brooklyn" shirt all the hip hop kids wear these days.
I remember reading in the Daily News once how someone tried to rob them at gunpoint and they whipped out their own gun to chase them off just to be busted for an unregistered firearm, D'oh!

Don't matter. Their gangsta is now respected!

Will it not look like a smart choice if the arena is not built?

A license to print money, ENY.

If Yankee Stadium is any proof, the businesses around a sports complex get absolutely NO benefit from being nearby. They are self contained destinations that get people in, get them drunk, and send them home. Anyway, as Ratner has shown in the past, his projects don't integrate into the neighborhoods, they turn their backs on them. NOt to wory, though, we've only weeks to go before the project is dead. Good riddanse!

I'm not sure Yankee Stadium is the best analogy, though. Fort Greene and Prospect Heights are much more walkable neighborhoods with many more transportation connections than where Yankee Stadium is. Plus YS is boxed in by I-87, parking lots and the elevated train tracks. I think the area around MSG might be a better analogue. Many, many people just come straight in and out of Penn/MSG, but I know that any time I go to an event there, I eat at a restaurant or drink at a bar nearby before or after, and I would generally rather poke my eyeballs out than spend any time in that area. I'm pretty sure businesses in the area will see a bump in sales if the stadium comes to AY.

Well, that's certainly why Ratner wanted it near his mall, rather than Coney Island where it belongs... and could still go now that the city owns an important chunk.

how many of you go shopping at the Atlantic Mall? or shop at PathMark for groceries. Or have family members who live in the affordable homes in Ft. Greene or older familymembers who live in the Assisted Living apartments. That is all RATNER development!!!!!!!!!!! you jerks. This neighborhood is sick and tired of looking at this empty lot that is a blight on our neighborhood and merchants, lets build already!! That spot has been empty for so many years and Ratner is the only one who wanted to do something with it. Lets get moving. Build something already!!! The neighborhood will beneift from it all around. Get used to it because it WILL be built!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you.
