StreetLevel: Gardening Supply Store Opening on Hicks
A gardening supply store called Brooklyn Farms is coming to the corner of Hicks and Degraw. A neighbor says workers have been busy fixing the space up and that it's slated to open soon. GMAP

i forget what used to be here, a bodega or a sandwich shop maybe? anyway, it will be nice to have a gardening shop nearby. maybe they can help me with my squirrel problem. squirrels turned my hanging herb garden into a rodent club med hammock.

Rob - avert your eyes!

Exactly what CG_ups said. (Minus the squirrel problem)

Ever since I started feeding squirrels they've left my bulbs, herbs & bird feeders alone - even though I don't keep them supplied all the time.
You can order them from:

If you don't want squirrels to dig up your bulbs you should wear garden gloves when you plant them. The squirrels can't smell the burried bulbs, but they smell your scent on the soil.
This is a good spot for a garden store, although the mesh on the windows make it look more like prison supplies. They need to green up the look a little.

thanks minard and arkady. i never would have thought of the gloves. another day, another thing learned.

The only thing I have to point out (and I love a good garden store...) is that the whole area is already serviced by three truly outstanding nurseries and garden shops. Not to mention Manzione's hardware, who also has garden supplies.
I really hope it's cute and it cuts the mustard, because wonderful places like Gowanus, Liberty Sunset, and Chelsea Gardens are already having a hard go at this market these days.

hooky:
which outstanding nurseries are you referring to?
Posted by: Minard Lafever at November 17, 2009 3:29 PM
I don't know about the others but Chelsea is awfully pricey.

Liberty Sunset is nice, it's right by Steve's Key Lime Pies in Red Hook. It's more live plants than plant supplies I think. I got some cute plants there. Mazzone Hardware has a great seasonal gardening shop next to the regular hardware store, but it's more low end stuff. I got some plastic planters there and they also have basic terra cotta planters. They also carry soil but no prettier containers or gardening supplies (like the gloves I must buy for next year's herb crop). I'm guessing since this space is smaller and more "shop-like" that it will be more focused on gardening supplies supplies rather than actual plants. At least I hope. Like simple but pleasant looking functional items (like a water can, gardening gloves, gardening tools) none of which I saw at Liberty or Mazzone. So hopefully it will fill in that gap rather than encroach on the existing businesses.

I walked by Brooklyn Farms yesterday - its really cute! Owner was really nice, he was playing good jazz and looked like he was putting the finishing touches on the place. He's really cute too ;)
The window display was a really interesting water and light system. He told me he is growing mostly beans, lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes, and japanese vegetables. The beans and tomatoes looked absolutely fantastic. Get this though: he is doing it all hydroponically. No soil - just water, rocks, and light. amazing
Apparently everything in there is catered towards hydroponics and indoor, "urban" gardening. He showed me some soil but the rest of the stuff in there looked like a science experiment. very cool, interesting place.

Ah, now I know where to go for my indoor pot garden!

ah thats what this place is. hydroponics. i walk by brooklyn farms every night and the hydro garden this dude has rigged in the window looks pretty sweet. more importantly, the grow light at night is not dissimilar to the pharos lighthouse of alexandria. guides me home through the merky waters of hicks street after a night of pounding beers and staring at the mediocre talent on parade in the gardens

Hydroponics! Amazing! now i can finally eat well and organically without it costing me a fortune. I'll grow my own tomato's and veggies. Yum. Nice conversation piece in the corner of my apartment also.
Thanks Brooklyn Farms.

Although I'm a firm believer of "you don't win friends with salad", I also believe that it's pretty fucking cool to be able to grow plants with water, rocks and light. Screw you stupid soil! You're dirty. Plus, it's nice that there's a cool / edgier store among all of the blah, blah, blah in this part of brooklyn. It was actually pretty surprisingly awesome. I can only deal with so many one-word-name stores with the vowels missing: grdn. Whatevs. I think I'll get my nephew one of these for xmas. This way, we won't have to have another toilet funeral for the dead goldfish/aquarium combo i got him last holiday.
Plus, I agree with the comments about the owner. He's pretty cute - for someone slinging garden supplies. I gotta say, the gardening people of my past weren't great to look at so this is a nice change of pace. Heeeeyyy sailor!
