Purple Yam Opens Today

purple-yam-1109.jpg
Purple Yam, the long awaited Filipino restaurant from the former owners of Cendrillon in Soho, opens today at 1314 Cortelyou Road in Ditmas Park. New York Magazine has a slideshow of the restaurant's interiors and Ditmas Park Blog has a post about Sunday's soft opening; Nelson Ryland has some photos posted on Flickr from the soft opening as well. Are all of you Victorian Flatbushers psyched or what? GMAP

Mrs Chicken and the Egg went and said it was very nice.

Did Mrs. Chicken and the Egg try the Balut? Is it on the menu?

Sunday wasn't a "soft opening" -- it was a private party that I wasn't invited to...

I'm actually very excited -- I've found myself eating waaaay to much pizza lately. And being lazy and not cooking for myself. This will be a great change - heard nothing but good things about this place. It's almost exactly the same distance from my house to this place and San Remo's pizza.

Here in Victorian Flatbush we start hyperventilating over practically anything better than a 99-cent store. But yes, I'm happy to see Cortelyou Road bounce back from a bunch of recent shuttered storefronts to have another nice new place open. Surely no little spark has been fanned with such desperate care since Tom Hanks tried to light a fire from twigs in "Cast Away."

bupe - we don't eat our own....

I'm seriously looking forward to trying this place very soon.

After all of this anticipation, they'd better not suck.

Now can we get a decent diner out here, please?

amen Snark, on both accounts. Just saw the menu and it's not sounding too exciting for me.

The menu sounded good to me:

- Tamarind Shrimp with caramelized onions & toasted mustard seeds

- Balinese duck leg or Bebek Betutu

- homemade sausage, air-dried beef (tapa) and achuete-cured pork (tocino).

- classic Korean tofu soup

- pa jun (Korean pancakes) and kimchee

- cold bibimbap

- Korean meatballs that Romy plans to make into sliders...

Bring it!

Kens, that menu is sounding pretty darn good to me. Mind you, I've not eaten for 4 hours...

ok ok Tamarind Shrimp it is! I guess I am just not into bibimbap and having it cold just doesn't sound appetizing to me.

Cendrillon was delicious, the atmosphere cozy, and the owners so friendly. Can't wait to trek over to Ditmas Park for hopefully more of the same.

Touche, Mrs. Chicken (and really, it is the one thing that grosses me out - I wouldn't go near them). In any case, how were the lumpia?

Well, PY was definitely hopping when I passed by there about half an hour ago. The tables were full and folks were milling about on the sidewalk out front. I'm gonna give them a few days to find their groove and then give them a whirl.
