Went on a tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard yesterday. It was fantastic - 300 acres of history and now a story of adaptive reuse - well worth the $30 fee. Thanks to Randolph for telling me about it.
Also, checked out the new cafe in Brooklyn Heights - Iris Cafe. It was super cute, great vibe, friendly people and good food and coffee (stumptown).

Serious news to start your week.
Dr. Shetty, who entered the limelight in the early 1990s as Mother Teresa's cardiac surgeon, offers cutting-edge medical care in India at a fraction of what it costs elsewhere in the world. His flagship heart hospital charges $2,000, on average, for open-heart surgery, compared with hospitals in the U.S. that are paid between $20,000 and $100,000, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

Iris Cafe is the one mentioned here on Friday - where Benson farted. It's on Columbia Place between Joralemon and State.

Jessi is lurking :o)
Posted by: Kensingtonian at November 23, 2009 9:37 AM
You mean Benson farted in the OT or he farted in the Iris Cafe, or both?
Thanks. The Champion family walked down Columbia Place between Joralemon and State the other day and we noticed the empty storefronts. I thought there is some real potential there for successful businesses once the Brooklyn Bridge Park is completed. There will be a ton of foot traffic in the streets leading down to the park.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 23, 2009 9:39 AM
ENY...not sure I'd have that procedure done in India. As an alternative, probably priced in between the two extremes, I'd research Singapore first.
Open heart surgery is not something you haggle for the best price ass if you were buying spices in the open air market.

So I went to a place that Denton wanted to go to on PPW called Le P'Tit Paris and it was excellent in every way possible.
Best service and one of the best meals I had but then again, I am not too much of a foodie. All of the waiters spoke French amongst themselves and the chef is French. Our waiter (Ted) was awesome and everything we ordered was very good. Good wine selection as well. I highly highly highly recommend it.

Bakery/Cafe Alert:
I was in the 'ghetto' this weekend and stumbled upon a bakery called Lily and Fig on 727 Franklin Ave. And there's no way for me to pass up a sweet treat.
The chocolate chip cookies ($1/ea., 3" in diameter) are greeeeat. And my 5 year old niece scarfed down a brownie ($1.50), leaving me only crumbs to taste but it was sooooo good.
I wish I had gotten a cupcake ($1.75?) for later to try.
It's a very cute place and they have seating and the prices are reasonable compared to other bakeries of this quality.

Don't tell our health insurance companies about the cheap rates in India or they'll be setting up charter flights.
Yet, dental is one insurance that many people don't have or it covers very little....and for those interested in traveling to Thailand...I was told by good friend of mine that he had dental work there very very cheap and far far more advanced technologically than anything he has heard/seen in New York. The money one would save would more than pay for trip.

Expert, I think it's fair but I too would like less. the sustainability and profitability of the business model in Bed Stuy is not as robust as elsewhere in brooklyn. One of the things Bed Stuy lacks is a lot of foot traffic during the daytime. The to/from work traffic is the driving force.
That said, on any given time in the evening, MANY people coming off the subway there are carrying Whole Foods & trader Joes bags.

"ENY...not sure I'd have that procedure done in India. As an alternative, probably priced in between the two extremes, I'd research Singapore first."
Dave, the point is medical care is extremely overpriced, and professionals like this doctor are among the people who can create a revaluation of the cost of medical services that will be one step in helping to alleviate the healthcare crisis in the U.S. I was also intrigued by last night's episode of 60 Minutes, which similarly reflected on this issue.
Posted by: East New York at November 23, 2009 10:28 AM
Dave, that's what I noticed yesterday. That in Bed Stuy there wasn't lots of foot traffic by the retail hubs and it seemed like there wasn't a really long strip of retail. Besides the three block strip on Lewis, It seemed like the retail (and nothing exciting, but corner delis) was clustered around corners and scattered amongst the blocks.
My partner said it's probably best to be on a subway street.
Maybe I'll go check out the empty fronts on Lewis.
Posted by: Expert Textpert at November 23, 2009 10:30 AM
I saw last night's 60 Minutes. That's a tough spot for everyone to be put in, especially the patient if he/she is rational and "with it."

Expert...If you want to talk more about this and share ideas let's chat. I've got no vested interest yet in anything. I've done a lot of research and pricing for the store that I described.
Malcolm X actually gets a lot more traffic and is changing but it's not at all like Lewis Ave or Stuyvesant Ave.

im surprised there isnt more of a dental black market scene. most dental work is not difficult to perform and the materials / tools are not that difficult to also find and acquire. dental work is not brain surgery so that's why im shocked there is a niche of available black dental work.
also is there any danger in wearing slightly irregular socks and underwear? i totally stocked up this weekend on those haha. nothing ive worn so far feels or looks irregular tho.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 23, 2009 11:47 AM
Hey everyone.
Thanks Dave, I did see that. It's the cribs with drop down sides. Apparently most of them leave a gap between the side and the mattress leaving room for the baby to suffocate.
Funny thing is, I picked one w/o the drop down side but everyone urged me to get the drop down side one as it's easier to get the kid in and out and to change the sheets on the mattress.
I guess I'm going back to my original fixed side crib I initially choose.
Stroller recalls, crib recalls...It's amazing we were all able to survive long enough to reach the child bearing years at all isn't it?

DIBS and the rest of you real fianancial/investment types:
At the risk of bringing out the crazies, I see the market is going up again today, but I found today's NYT story on the US being overloaded on short-term low rate debt a bit disconcerting. What kind of interest rate rises are you anticipating in the first half of 2010 and to what extent do you expect those rises to put the breaks on recovery? What has the market priced in about this?
Posted by: slopefarm at November 23, 2009 12:22 PM

Posted by: blowfish at November 23, 2009 12:30 PM
slope, to the extent that the Fed has control over interest rates it is at the very short end. I think consensus is, and out belief too that short rates will stay low into 2011. I expect 5-30 year rates to start rising. I've thought that for awhile now and so far have lost money on that hedge.
I think the consensus is right. The Fed won't raise rates until a rcovery is well entrenched and they've got history behind them on that.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 23, 2009 12:38 PM

slopefarm,
The NYT article agrues for the Fed keeping interest rates low for as long as they can get away with it (i.e. there is enough demand for US debt). I think that a rate rise in the first half next year is unlikely.

Long term rates could start to rise (yield curve steepens) if any of the auctions start to sputter or if inflation starts to show. As Dave mentioned, the Fed really only controls the starting point of the yield curve. Lots of other things go into its shape.

so I get mailing from DEP and then they left a card they were there to install a remote water meter. Well, they did that several years ago. Do they not check their records or see it there when stopped by? This happening to anyone else?

"anyone ever order a turkey from Jive turkey in Ft Greene?"
Mrs. ENY picked one up from there last year. It was good (Cajun seasoned; they have all types) but not great. Certainly not great enough (in our opinion) to justify the LONG line to pick one up in the mornings leading up to Thanksgiving or the relatively high price. But, if you need a Turkey and don't have the time/inclination to cook one yourself, I think it is a reasonable option.
Posted by: East New York at November 23, 2009 2:14 PM
PB - The new thing is more remote. The current remote is read by a "drive by". The new one sends the info to a central depot.

Apparently you can get a precooked turkey breast from Paula Dean. Just reheat it. I've heard good things about them. Don't know the link or where they are available.

"I thought it was even worse, Dave. I thought people were getting really sick and had to move out of their homes?"
The Property Damage is well documented. The Bodily Injury element of it is still not proven, though it could end up like the next toxic mold and Ed McMahon's dog.
There are some people in Florida who now own houses that are worth half of what they bought them for, that are made with Chinese drywall that makes they uninsurable. People are reporting claims to the homeowners insurers, who are not only denying claims, but cancelling policies. Its going to be a mess down there for a long time.

Hey all,
I know I haven't been around much of late, but now can I ask some real estate advice re: Crown Heights? More4less was kind enough to show me his place over there and it's fabulous, and I just looked at condos in the Bedfordshire, on Pacific between Nostrand and Bedford. They are also fabulous -- perhaps not quite as expansive and dripping with original detail, but really nicely renovated.
However, the block looks a lot better on paper than it feels in reality. Is this true? Where is the closest decent coffee? And anyone know anything about PS 3?
Thanks in advance :)

Don't know if anyone had any interest at all but my folks just sent me a pic of their "beach" just after hurricane Ida was subsiding. They live in VA right at the tip of the Delmarva just before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on the Bay side.
Where the water is, that's the beach.
On the other side of the bulkhead where you can see exposed sandbags, that used to be covered in vegetation. Those that didn't backfill their bulkheads with sandbags lost huge amounts of land from their bluffs. The water just scooped it out right over the tops of the bulkheads.
The alien in yellow? That's my dad.

Public Service Announcement:
If you're driving from South Brooklyn and heading north on the Gowanus. They are doing some sort of construction and have split the lanes with cones. Everyone gets into the right hand lane cause they think that is the only one that will go to the bridges. If you stay in the middle lane (to the left of the 'cones'-construction), they move faster and you can still merge into the right hand lanes for the bridges further north.
Posted by: Expert Textpert at November 23, 2009 3:17 PM
If you're driving from South Brooklyn and heading north on the Gowanus and reading and posting on Brownstoner at the same time, you're a hell of a multi-tasker.

snappy that sucks. they shouldnt let the kids all out at once like that. i think when i was in high school they staggered us out and made sure the whole school wasnt released at once because that is torture on a neighborhood and extremely dangerous to anyone who might be unfortunate enough to be near school at the time of getting let out as well. seriously it's best advice to carry a low grade taser, which i firmly believe every citizen on Earth should always have on them at all times.

Heather, I would be the first to admit the Bedfordshire block is not one of our scenic wonders - but it could be! For many, the much contested shelter/proposed intake center at the Armory is a deal breaker. The city in its infinite wisdom dumps the men in the morning, locks the doors, and does not provide any kind of job training, social service programs, or even a lounge for them to go to, or be at, and the homeless hang around the area all day. The rest of the block, excluding the fabulous St. Bart's church, looks much worse than it actually is. I live a block down, and walk that block all the time, and do not worry about anyone, it's just people hanging out in the summer.
Amenities, however, are another story. You would be close to the subway at Nostrand/Fulton, and decently close to SuperFoodtown on Fulton/Brooklyn, which has excellent food choices, as well as the greengrocers, fish, meat markets, etc on Fulton. Restaurants and cafe's, not so much. David's Briskets on Nostrand, Atlantic/Herkimer has a great sammich, but you don't go there for ambiance, just take away. A new coffee shop will be opening on my block, Pacific, Nostrand/NY soon, next to the new condos. There are a couple of places like Bush Babies on Fulton, and more opening up on Bedford on the Bed Stuy side. For any sit down dining, not including Applebees in Restoration Plaza, you'd have to head west towards Franklin, or south to Crow Hill Bistro, formerly Tavern on Nostrand. Sushi and Thai at Sushi Tatsu on Dean and Franklin would be the closest.
All in all, compared to 6 years ago, it's a feast, compared to Park Slope, famine. But I still think it's a great place to live.

Ditto, if you're good at cutting people off, sure. I don't have the balls to do stuff like that. BUT I won't let people in either who do that! I don't give them enough room to get in.
Over the weekend we were coming back from the city on the FDR in the right hand lane to get on the Brooklyn Bridge (it always backs up). A car cuts us off to get into the bridge lane. My partner was so furious, he gets into the left hand lane speeds up and cuts off the car that cut us off.
I was furious at partner. I hate road rage games like that.

Thanks Montrose, that's exactly the info I was looking for. And yes, the intake shelter may be a deal-breaker. I wasn't that fussed about it until one of them called me a white bitch yesterday. I must have reached a new stage of maturity because I did not go off on him. Still, it would be culture shockish to go from our part of Fort Greene to that... a bit.
Does Tacos Muertes (I may have the name wrong) deliver to there? What about Fresh Direct?
General shopping does look great. Twee shopping less so.
I didn't realize the city kicked all those men out... figured they were just standing around because they wanted to. I do now understand why the neighborhood was so opposed to having more homeless dumped on their doorstep however.

I agree that Hark the Herald Angels Sing is the best carol, words and music.
It goes a bit high to sing comfortably, though.
Posted by: etson at November 23, 2009 3:58 PM
"All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth" came out the year I wanted mine - it's a fave.
Posted by: Arkady at November 23, 2009 3:58 PM
"Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"
Yeah, that's a good one, too.
Posted by: East New York at November 23, 2009 3:59 PM
Bob Zimmerman is singing Christmas songs?
Oy gevalt!!
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 23, 2009 4:00 PM
And I don't like them but you've got to have Jingle Cats.

"Just as torturous as the Chipmunks"
Like nails on a chalk board. Besides, I prefer gerbils.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 23, 2009 4:01 PM
Anyone ever get a Brownjokester from someone without any front teeth?
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 23, 2009 4:01 PM
Eartha Kitt, Santa Baby. I have spoken :)

"Just as torturous as the Chipmunks"
There would be no Chipmunks if not for the Beatles.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 23, 2009 4:03 PM
"Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"
Not sure why but this song reminded me of 'Rock and Roll Waltz', I know it's not a X-mas song, but I do love it. I want to be that couple. My kid coming home and finding their parents trying to waltz to some current hip hop song.

"Adeste Fideles", the Latin version of "O Come All Ye Faithful".
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 23, 2009 4:03 PM
The only 'Heat Miser' I know was an instrumental track by Massive Attack, but that had nothing to do with Christmas.
Posted by: etson at November 23, 2009 4:05 PM
herk, the CGarDog seems a little better, thanks. Due to get the last test results back today.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 23, 2009 4:06 PM
Thanks, blowfish... I didn't know about Sweet Revenge or the ital-carribean place!
Farther down on Fulton... well, that's my neighborhood now, pretty much. I actually kinda like Fulton up by Restoration Plaza better.

When I was a choir boy (yes, I was), "Come all ye faithful" especially with the line of "Lo! he abhors not the Virgin's womb" had us all giggling until we were admonished by the Vicar.
Posted by: dittoburg at November 23, 2009 4:12 PM
I'm partial to Duke Ellington's take on the Nutcracker, and, of course, having seen the big man in a Santa suit back in the late 70s, I can't help but smile when the Boss's take on Santa Clause Is Coming to Town comes on the radio, even though it is way overplayed. Meanwhile, I can't take Christmas music until I've heard Alice's Restaurant at least ocne around Thanksgiving.
P.S. I hear Christmas carols were invented in China in 1000 B.C.

Come all ye faithful really needs the descant though. Then, if thats your thing, its a bit like the rush of an ecstasy pill.

The 'gayest' music video ever! I love when David says you're the one that sings, like he never heard of Bing Crosby.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zMhSjDqvRs&feature=related
David also mentioned 'John Lennon' as the older fellas. hahaha
Josh Groban also does a version...and he's cuuuuute (what can I say, it's that shaggy rocker hair look that I love)

Nathan Lane? How you figure cobble? How could Nathan Lane be gay if Harvey Fierstein isn't? Doesn't make sense? Just cause they're show people doesn't mean anything.
