Where's my Daddy? ENY? Clap time.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 5, 2009 9:18 AM
whats all this "who's your daddy" stuff. It sounds a bit gay to me (homo).
Posted by: dittoburg at November 5, 2009 9:19 AM
Just checked out what you guys were talking about on Gothamist. Yes, DIBS, your comments were hysterical.

"whats all this "who's your daddy" stuff. It sounds a bit gay to me (homo)."
Back when Pedro Martinez played for the Sox - and was good - the yankees used to kick his ass. after one game in a lockeroom interview he stated "the yankees are my daddy"
hence - whenever he is pitching in yankee stadium he hears "WHO'S YOUR DADDY"

Should I be revising the "Welcome letter" in anticipation of new posters? ; )
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 5, 2009 9:23 AM
Yes cobble...it's akin to the Catholic Church inviting over the disenfranchised Episcopalians.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 5, 2009 9:24 AM
Thanks DH, I'd better add that to my pop-culture notebook.
Posted by: dittoburg at November 5, 2009 9:25 AM
Do we have to talk about the Yankees?
However, speaking of the "Who's your daddy"... the woman at the bakery this morning (who I like very much because she calls me "Papi" and that makes me feel tingly) said, "Hmm... who's your daddy as she perused the bagel rack to find the one I asked for." Seemed very odd. And she didn't call me Papi this morning.

Did you guys see the link at the bottom of the pigeon story? Must see pictures of "trapped rat" (NOT CRUEL), complete with Junior's cheesecake and a hot blonde:

Snappy, even YOU will find these pics hysterical.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 5, 2009 9:25 AM
tybur - you like it that the server calls you daddy?
What is all this weird stuff. Gives me the shivers, not the tingles. eerugh.
Posted by: dittoburg at November 5, 2009 9:28 AM
The trapped rat was soooo cute.

An unusual complaint about carriage horses was sent in to the NY Times' Metropolitan Diary.
A woman tells of her harrowing parking experience, saying she was about to back in to a spot on Central Park West, across from her apartment building, but "as soon as I put the car in reverse to parallel park, I noticed a horse and buggy. I checked my rearview mirror and couldn’t believe that the horse came as close as possible to my car and started licking it, from the trunk to the back window. The horse’s saliva created a film over my children’s college decals." Not the decals!
She then, of course, got out of her car and screamed at the driver. College decal destruction: Just one more reason to ban the carriage horse industry?

Posted by: bxgrl at November 5, 2009 9:34 AM
No... not "daddy," that would be creepy to me too. The word has to be "papi."
Though, I really don't understand why she was saying "Who's your daddy?" to the bagels... that's odd on many levels.
Posted by: tybur6 at November 5, 2009 9:34 AM
Horses licking decals. Isn't that a sign that the apocalypse is near? ; )
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 5, 2009 9:37 AM
That horse was those decals' daddy.
Posted by: Brokedeveloper at November 5, 2009 9:39 AM
Aren't decals installed on the inside of windows?
Posted by: Arkady at November 5, 2009 9:39 AM
Poor rat. According to Gothamist he did not survive. I wonder what the exact cause of death was? I hope no one stepped on him...

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 5, 2009 9:42 AM
as I'm walking down 3rd avenue last night...sign outside lunch place sez 'Toss Your Own Salad $8.95'. I almost went in for a demonstration.
DIBS comment this morning in Forum--"I do however spend a lot of money impulsively on cosmetic things but that's totally discretionary" -- I think should have included '(no homo)' at end.
Posted by: Petebklyn at November 5, 2009 9:42 AM
cobble- I thought so! the woman should have thought a little more about this. If that's what horse saliva does to decals, maybe this is the Botox treatment of the future?
Anyone see the news about birthing parties? The new trend in having a baby? UGHHHHHH!
Posted by: bxgrl at November 5, 2009 9:42 AM
Tybur - i just went to a Spanish-English translator and put in papi - it said "papi"
masculine noun1. daddy (informal), pop (United States).
Perhaps a Spanish speaker here can explain waht it means besides "daddy".
Posted by: dittoburg at November 5, 2009 9:42 AM
My favorite sign from last night, draped from the railings outside the Stadium by a bunch of local kids (picture a huge paiting of a burning Cigar):
"This is New York: We smoke Phillies."
Posted by: Brokedeveloper at November 5, 2009 9:43 AM
""This is New York: We smoke Phillies."
HAHAHA!
Posted by: dirty_hipster at November 5, 2009 9:45 AM
Must be the frilly underwear, dibs
Posted by: bxgrl at November 5, 2009 9:45 AM
ditto, it doesn't really mean daddy or pop in terms of a father. it's used broadly as a term of endearment towards someone and that someone does not necessarily have to be older.
Look up Papi Chulo in urban dictionary!!! There is a NYC DJ named Papi Chulo...he's a young guy!!!!!
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 5, 2009 9:47 AM
Ditto... I'm not disputing that Papi means Daddy. However, there is a connotation in spanish that is not creepy like "Daddy" in english and it makes me tingly (around the penile region). What can I say.
Posted by: tybur6 at November 5, 2009 9:47 AM
What's a birthing party? Surely a group can't time the event?!

People, please! Let's not be cruel- dibs must feel like he's been hanging by a string for days. Emotional wounds like these will fester.

Rob - can you NOT like horses????
Posted by: gemini10 at November 5, 2009 9:49 AM
I thought a birthing party was a get-together to discuss the fact that Barack Obama was not born in Hawaii?
Posted by: Brokedeveloper at November 5, 2009 9:51 AM
arkady- I guess as soon as the labor pains start, the woman calls her friends and family in and they stand around watching. There's no doctor or nurse. They just stand around looking uplifted while the mom is screaming on the bed. And they videotape it.
Posted by: bxgrl at November 5, 2009 9:51 AM
no, broke- that's a birthER party. They also stand around, usually munching on sour grapes and drinking whine.

gemini- Having been present at the birth of my niece and nephew, and having gotten bit by my sister9 who also sucker punched her husband during labor- I can truly say I have no idea. Don't get me wrong- watching a baby being born is amazing- but a party? With a video of you screaming and cursing and getting into strange positions? What do they do with the placenta? Spread it on crackers afterwards? Ugh ugh ugh.
The news also said about 40% of women who do this wind up going to the hospital for complications.

Broked, you are on a roll past couple of days. Welcome to the PLUSA boot camp. You are fitting right in.
Ty6, I am with you. I love being referred to as "papi". I have a weak spot for Latinas, what can I say. Where do you get your morning breakfast? Hopefully in our neighborhood. I need to visit that place.

That about says it all. The Yankees are the best team. The Phillies are good, but not a true match for Yankees. There was no way (CAR GAR) that they would lose a game six with Pettite on the mound. Jimmy Rollins (along with NSR, Dave, Arkady, etc.) found out the Phillies weren't playing the Mets or Tampa Bay this time around. Twenty-seven and counting, baby!

Very very busy here in DC - but it's much more enjoyable than teaching high school...lots of free conferences, receptions, dinners (the Saudi defense attache is hosting us tonight)...usually 7 hours of reading/work per day. I'll get up to those places on Cortelyou at the end of the semester, Kens! Hope all you PLUSAs are doing well.

Hey six, glad all is well. I hear our alma mater won in football last weekend. Have to admit, I only went to 2 games when I was in college, and never any since. My classmates who were jocks all ended up in secret societies, and are all making mondo bucks now. Connections rule.

Kensingtonian -- At John's on Cortelyou Road. They are very inconsistent about their bagels. Sometimes they are the absolute best bagels (25%) of the time. Other times they are pretty much OK (45%). And too often (30%) they are the consistency of a strange roll with a hole in the middle....
I'm excited about the branch of Bagels by the Park "opening soon" -- but I don't know if they'll call me Papi. Time will tell.

Bloomberg and the Yankees in a single week. Unbelievable, now if only the Arena construction would start too, I might have a spontaneous orgasm!

CGar- you wish. Seriously, the whole phenomenon is gross. First off, who wants people watching them during one of the most medically intimate moments in their life?? For real, if I didn't have to be there for my child's birth I'd opt not to!
Second, imagine getting the invitation? Barf! Uhm, Jackie, I'm going to have to decline your "birthing" invitation, Frankly the thought of watching your 'lady parts' in all their glory oh, and by glory I mean tearing from the seams with blood, poop and other such niceties is just a wee bit off-putting.
Thanks though, I'll see you at work on Monday.

Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 5, 2009 11:03 AM
I told you they'd win, fsrq. You were all shaky and nervous. Get it together!
The Yankees can definitely repeat as long as the top pitchers (C.C., A.J. Pettite, Joba, Mariano) stay healthy. And if they get Chien-Ming Wang back at close to what he was like two years ago and all else stays the same, the Yankees WILL repeat!
Posted by: East New York at November 5, 2009 11:03 AM
how much longer can Mariano go?
He's what - 40 now? (give or take 5 years, as those latin american born players always lie about their age coming up)

There's no place in this man's game for softies! Can't you tell a championship team when you see one? The Yankees were clearly the best team in baseball this year. Doubting is for cowards! Next time, show some backbone!

ENY, bxgrl, I wasn't shaky. I was, in fact, very optimistic. But my hopes have been crushed by the Yankees before, in the not so distant past, and I didn't want to jinx a repeat. I can be very superstitious. I won't dare go to the parade - went to 2 World Series games and then the Mets parade in '86 and they haven't won since. Just sayin'.

Putting together the two major events of this week:
I will cast my vote MULTIPLE TIMES for any mayoral candidate who promises to end ticker tape parades for a winning sports team, regardless of their position on any other issue.
These ticker tape parades are an example of why I'm turned off by most major league sports today, even though I was a rabid baseball player and fan when I was a kid.
I have two objections to these parades:
1) These players are supported all year by the fans. They make a damn good salary (and bully for them). WHEN will they in turn show some appreciation to the fans???? Why doesn't the Yankee organization throw some kind of party for their fans, or show their appreciation in some way?? I detest the fact that many players no longer give out free signatures, for instance. Let' not even talk about the outrageous prices they charge for food at Yankee stadium.
2) More importantly, these types of parades used to be reserved for heroes: soldiers, astronauts who risked death to explore space, etc. The Yankees are a great team, and they deserve their championship. They are not, however, "heroes". It speaks volumes about our society that the only ticker-tape parades we give nowadays are for entertainers/sports figures. We've gone through two wars, and no one even suggests of giving the vets such a parade.
Posted by: benson at November 5, 2009 11:34 AM

The next person who talks about fisting is going to get a knuckle sandwich!
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 5, 2009 11:38 AM
Nov. 11 is the annual Veteran's Day Parade.
And considering how little there is to be happy about these days, why shouldn't we enjoy celebrating something for one day? It takes away nothing from our soldiers- no one thinks Derek Jeter is a hero. I sure don't equate the Yankees with astronauts, cops, firefighters or soldiers. But if we can have one day where we set aside our differences and celebrate a victory as a city, and savor the day- why not?

Yes, and five of the previously charged have plead "guilty" probably with reduced sentences to turn state's evidence against Raj.
I still contend that if Raj believes he will face jail time, he will flee.

ENY - I wasnt shaky - I am superstitious about baseball.
As for next year I think they have a very good shot - think about how much better the team would have been if Wang was healthy and Marte was in his post-season form - and think about how amazing they would have been in the playoffs if Cano and Texiera were hitting.
Benson - I agree with your point #2 - but I think the issue isnt that we don't need a parade for sports teams (I mean why not - people like them and we have parades and fairs for much less publicly engaging things) I think the issue is why dont we have more parades for real heroes.
As great as the Yankee victory was last night, I am left with one bad feeling - what the hell am I going to do with myself until April.

apropos of the 'opening links' thread, seems that hiring on Wall Street is definitely picking up. Anecdotally of course.
Da kid, who was laid off last November, was called back on a contract basis, $25/hour, as many hours as she could work, Saturday and Sunday and nights included. She made like $6000 in a few weeks, enuf to keep her out of the basement a few more months.
Now she's just been offered her old position back and the same firm, at quite a nice salary, given her age and experience, or should I say lack thereof.
Meanwhile she just had another interview with a WS boutique research firm. She was one of eight candidates, made the second round and is now one of two. Second interview today. She may well find herself with the luxury of two job offers.
Meanwhile a friend of hers who was laid off from the same firm but who comes from a poor family, so is on her own financially, and was going thru the last of her 401k to survive, has just found a 100k job.
Sorry BHO, Miss Muffet, and the What, RE has bottomed. See the jobs claims and productivity stats this AM?

Denton;
Good news about your daughter. This morning I heard an interesting take on things. This fellow, a pollster, was predicting major political turmoil ahead if the net effect of TARP and the stimulus program is a revival of Wall Street, while the other areas of the country, and other sectors of the economy, continue to languish in high unemployment.
I think there is something to that thought. I am the last guy to engage in class warfare and Wall St. bashing, but I do think there it will simply not be palpable to common folks to see that the crwod who caused this crisis are back on top, while the remainder of the economy lies in shambles.

"Yeah OK, fsrq. There's lots of superstition in baseball. But your not-100%-committed-vibe may have ALSO jinxed the Yanks! Ever think of that?"
No - you jinx something by saying it as a fact or a rule, when in reality it is only a possibility (even a strong one)..
Examples - "I dont think they'll be any traffic"
"I'm not worried, no one in my family ever has a heart attack"
"This car never breaks down"
Saying the Yankees will win the WS or pennant is a jinx! saying you have worries is not.
Its simply the rules of jinxes
Dont you know anything? : )
Posted by: fsrg at November 5, 2009 1:07 PM
In my fear of jinxing the Yanks I waited until the 9th to turn the game on. After they won, I waited in vain for the revelers to run up and down the street so I could have someone to party with. Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at November 5, 2009 1:24 PM
Toronto Jays GM got his wish - Yankees win the world series. Yanks winning makes offers for Halladay that much juicier this offseason. Red Sox, Angels, Phillies,... will all be calling cause they now internalized that they need to make more serious commitment in the arms race against the Yankee Empire. Lackey would get juicy offers too.
Unfortunately for my Mets whose owners claims to be broke thanks to Madoff (but was contradicted by Madoff investigators saying Wilpons were Net Profit via the ponzi scheme) will likely be inactive on the free agent market.

Just in case the housing market tanks again... Not a play for everyone... Those who are waiting for better prices have to realize dollars are being printed and the gov is purposely hurting the dollar.. Sure you may be lucky to get a great price on a foreclosure but you better be a cash buyer..

"you have to admit, NJ and VA are stinging rebukes of Obama's economic program to date."
Actually according to polling data, most people said Obama did not factor into their decision at all.
The democratic candidate in VA was not strong at all, and people in NJ are fed up with high property taxes and corruption which had a lot more to do with a former CEO of GS running the state (when main street America HATES wall street right now) than it had to do with Obama.
The really interesting vote was the one in NY district 23 where the two most talked about GOP Presidential candidates (among other talk show personalities) backed a conservative instead of the moderate Republican to then lose to a Democrat for the first time in over 100 years.
Posted by: 11217 at November 5, 2009 1:51 PM
Legion- I think that's kind of a simplistic analysis. The more interesting one is the very stinging rebuke of the conservatives in NY-23. The 2 gubernatorial elections were about local issues, not national ones.
============================
joe- well, what were you saying, then? You weren't clear. I didn't think the Obama tributes were bad at all- I looked at what kids saw with his election. Hope. The classic American dream can be for everyone. there is no correlation with Bush, -they were always whaling on who was or wasn't a real Patriot. Disagreed with Bush policies and you weren't. Now that's fascism.

Posted by: bxgrl at November 5, 2009 1:57 PM
11217,
yeah, good one. I guess that's why Obama's many visits to New Jersey to support Corzine were just for tea and crumpets.
the story there was of low democratic turn-out, in addition to an energized opposition. In the end the story goes like this; a deep blue state turned red.
as far as NY district 23, I see that at a major problem with party protocol. they didn't have a primary to hash these differences out (remember the differences with Hillary and Barack before their primaries), then the "republican" woman opts out and endorses the democrat.
to add further to the confusion, they leave the woman's name on the ballot (even though she's no longer in the race!) what is this? North Korea? So she manages to get 6% of the votes from idiots who vote for a candidate that is not even running. In the end, the democrat wins by 4 points.
Not a biggie, just a study in party ineptitude and a test run on how not to run an election in the future. The democrat is up again next year, let's see if he stays. My guess is he's out.

Snappy,
If the people who paid good money for these commercials didn't believe that they have some effect, you can bet that they wouldn't run them.
Advertising works. As Bill Clinton once wisely said to those who don't believe in the power of advertising: "OK, fine, don't advertise your product." (Clinton said this to politicians who were pooh-poohing the effectiveness of cigarette advertising).

Legion,
I think your interpretation of election is probably more spin (or wish) than reality. Governors of states are often other 'color' than how state votes in presidential elections and congressional delegations. New York state had republican governor for (seems like) eternity but hardly votes 'red' in pres. elections. And that rightwing panderer from Minn. that stuck his nose in upstate congressional election represents a state that is pretty reliably democratic for president. Arkansas, Tenn and Wyoming have democratic governors but those state are hardly democratic column.
Different issues on state level. And as in all elections personality often plays bigger role than issues.

"anyone know what the apartments are like in the Cobble Hill Towers? I see they are a brownstoner advertiser"
DH, I haven't been inside, but I hear they're very nice - I don't think they're large. I was considering moving there myself when I was playing chicken with my landlord over reducing my rent. Really well-maintained buildings with beautiful private gardens between them. (This seems to by my theme today.) As for BQE-proximity, I almost bought 2 different apartments in the Arches, directly across the street from CH Towers on the corner of Hicks and Warren.

lol, talk about spin. you should know by now that all talk of historical precedent in politics is only as good as the next election. remember how all those polls showed that Bush could not win in 2004, he was polling below 50%, or how Obama could not win without the South, or how New Jersey was too entrenched in the Democratic party machinery.
No, my friend, New Jersey was a 20 point swing from blue to red in 12 months. That says alot.

Ok...everyone here really hates the BQE (and for good reason!). Question...If a condo/house that you absolutely LOVED but was smack against the BQE were offered to you at, let's say, 75% below it's true value, would you buy it?

You reference poll numbers and how unreliable they are. And try to spin governors elections as a referendum on federal gov't policy. There is a big disconnect between state and fed.

No, you just have to wait
He said trust, give it time

No, renovations, don't come easy
But I keep on waiting
Anticipating for that en suite bath

For a kitchen island

I keep waiting
I keep on waiting
But it ain't easy

I see what you're saying. States often have opposing party governors as a sort of counter-balance to national offices. But there are many that don't. Like New York and New Jersey to name two.
To continue to deny that the landslide victories in NJ and VA were anything but a voter push back is to deny that people often associate local politics with national issues. As they say, all politics is local. Voters are angry out there, for many reasons, economy, healthcare or jobs issues. Do you really believe that they would not take it out on the nearest voting booth? come on now!

"11217,

1. Unemployment. Makes high property taxes a more urgent problem. Unlike income tax, you owe it even if you don't earn. Unlike sales tax, you owe it even if you don't transact.
2. Blind eye to corruption in Hudson county.
3. Corzine = Goldman Sachs (no one gave a sh*t about that four years ago, now WS, and specifically GS, is politically toxic).
4. Stupid speeding accident.
Dems would be stupid to ignore results but republicans would be equally stupid to assume this was a referendum on Obama.

Snappy;
To go back to the advertising discussion a bit. I'm not sure that advertising directly changes a person's mind, but perhaps reinforce the strength (or weakness) of a product.
I can only give you the example of my own company. When I first joined my company, we had an active program of advertising and trade-show attendance in our market segment. After the dot-com implosion, it was drastically cut back, and has never recovered. It has lead to a widespread impression in that market segement that my company is no longer a leader in it, and is no longer heavily invested in it (which turns out to be the actual case). In other words, our lack of advertising has reinforced the impression that we are weak in this segment.

If I was a LL I might prefer renting as a "share." Presuming it was young or youngish people more likely their parents would pick up the rent if any are out of work or can't pay their rent for any reason. You could even get the parents to co-sign the lease so they would be liable.
Seems these "no share" LL's have more of a quality-of-life issue w/ noise and young people than any worry of not being paid rent. I'd care more about getting my rent!

Benson, like I said, I'm a total cynic. Take for example the Mucinex commercials. They gross me out to no end. At the end of my gangster flu that would not let go, the doc recommended I get some. (mucinex...not booty!) I refused for the simple fact that I hate their ever-present and gross commercials. I mean really, talking hockers? EEEEEWWWWWW! I guess commercials work the opposite way for me. But, to your point, everytime I see a Mucinex commercial, it reinforces to me that I will never buy it no matter what.
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at November 5, 2009 2:53 PM
"Is it illegal for a landlord to advertise a rental and specify "no shares" ??"
If you think about it, why should it be? If Mr/Ms Potential Renter doesn't like the fact they you can't share the prospective apartment, they can simply opt not to take the place. There are other apartments that will accept shares. At least this landlord makes it clear right up front. I also don't see why any landlord should be compelled or required to accept shares. I don't think a decision not to accept shares is in any way akin to discriminating against a potential tenant based on race, religion, etc.

Hi, I'm a democratic Jersey resident who voted for Christie.
Slope is right. The corruption scandal sent many of us Democrats over the edge. Corzine turned a completely blind eye to what had gone down which was essentially 44, primarily all, Democratic Hudson County officials being arrested. Corzine stumped with Mayor Healy of Jersey City the same week half his cabinet was arrested!
When Christie was with the U.S. Attorney's Office. He successfully prosecuted more than 130 public officials for corruption.
Christie stumped hard on reducing the tax burden, particularly to homeowners. Four years ago Corzine promised to reduce ppty taxes- they've SOARED since then. I say, let's give this bum a shot and see if he delivers since we know Corzine won't.
BOTTOM LINE- My vote had NOTHING to do with Obama.

"The top issues for voters have been property taxes and taxes in general, issues on which polls showed voters generally trust Christie more.
The last poll on the race, from Fairleigh Dickinson University on Monday, found 68 percent saying the country was heading in the right direction and just 34 percent saying that about New Jersey -- not surprising in a state with a 9.7 percent unemployment rate and a looming $8 billion state budget deficit.
The exit polls confirmed how much the economy was on the minds of voters. Thirty-one percent said the economy was the most important issue, 26 percent cited property taxes, 20 percent pointed to corruption and 18 percent named health care.

ok, let's go to the voter's themselves. exit polls in NJ showed that about 60% of the voters said it wasn't about Obama, in VA it was about 57%. That means about 40% of the voters in NJ and 43% in VA did feel that Obama influenced their vote. That's not good, if there isn't supposed to be any cross polination of issues. Furthermore, independents, skewed sharply towards the Republicans. Independents, are the same people who voted Barack Obama in. That can't be a good sign either. Bottom line, those people didn't vote in a vacum. If this were an opposing scenario, I would say the same about the Republicans.

Benson is right about advertising. It's impact is almost impossible to accurately measure, but if your firm is not out there spreading its message, it runs the risk of becoming a non-factor, even if the brand is successful. McDonald's and Geico advertise more than almost anyone, despite already being highly profitable companies.

In the U.S. it's NEVER that cut and dry. You aren't factoring in the percentage of people who don't know their ass from their elbow. You can't say that because 60% of people said it wasn't about Obama that the remaining 40% said it was. There are ALWAYS undecideds and people who don't know who Obama is.
I recently saw a poll which said that 18% (yes, you heard that correctly) 18% of Americans think the Sun revolves around the Earth. I kid you not.

In the United States, more people believe that houses can be haunted by the dead than believe that the living can cause climate change. Is this simply a scary Halloween tale or our frightening future?
The latest Pew poll on global warming shows a large drop in the percentage of Americans who say there is solid evidence that global temperatures are rising, from 71% down to only 57% in the last 18 months. And global warming due to human activity? The overall numbers have declined from 47% to 36%. To put this in perspective, a Gallup poll found that 37% of Americans believe that houses can be haunted.

DALLAS (Reuters Life!) - More Americans believe in a literal hell and the devil than Darwin's theory of evolution, according to a new Harris poll released on Thursday.
It is the latest survey to highlight America's deep level of religiosity, a cultural trait that sets it apart from much of the developed world.
It also helps explain many of its political battles which Europeans find bewildering, such as efforts to have "Intelligent Design" theory -- which holds life is too complex to have evolved by chance -- taught in schools alongside evolution.
The poll of 2,455 U.S. adults from Nov 7 to 13 found that 82 percent of those surveyed believed in God, a figure unchanged since the question was asked in 2005.
It further found that 79 percent believed in miracles, 75 percent in heaven, while 72 percent believed that Jesus is God or the Son of God. Belief in hell and the devil was expressed by 62 percent.
Darwin's theory of evolution met a far more skeptical audience which might surprise some outsiders as the United States is renowned for its excellence in scientific research.
Only 42 percent of those surveyed said they believed in Darwin's theory which largely informs how biology and related sciences are approached. While often referred to as evolution it is in fact the 19th century British intellectual's theory of "natural selection."

11217;
I am an engineer who has a minor in statistics. For a good part of my career, I was involved in statistical modelling of processes (in my case, it involved the characteristics of optical fiber). Precisely because of that experience in statistical modelling, I am wary of the global warming claims. Not saying that they may not be true, but I know that to model any process involves alot of assumptions, and your results are only as good as those assumptions. I am especially wary of those who claim that "the debate is over" or run around predicting doomsday. Anybody who does any kind of modelling is always open to improvements in it. I continually worked to improve my statistical modelling.
Finally, I am always wary when science wades into the field of politics, as has happened with this issue.

resorting to "brainless Americans" will not further your point, unfortunately.
try the most recent Gallup poll though, since you like to quote polls;
Obama's 3rd quarter approval rating has dropped to 53% down from 62% in 2nd quarter. The largest quarterly drop since 1953. That's Gallup, not me.
Bottom line, you think Obama leads in a vacum, I don't. Like it or not, national politics plays out in the polls locally, if only by energizing the opposing base.

The first instance refers to two people renting a place as a couple. That's not a "share." The second instance is also not a "share" as the prospective tenants are a family as opposed to separate adults.
Posted by: East New York at November 5, 2009 3:18 PM

"Bottom line, you think Obama leads in a vacum, I don't."
Legion, the thing is...I like what Obama is doing right now, but many Americans are impatient and yes, downright ignorant (about a lot of things). What has happened to our economy (much of it caused by the previous 8 years) takes more than a year to fix. I think we are headed in the right direction, and I think we have someone who is genuinely interested in trying to fix these problems at the job.
NJ and VA are the only 2 states to hold their governor's race 1 year after the Presidential election. If it were in 2010 like the rest, I would like to think the outcome would be different, because I think we are slowing seeing things improve with the help of some much needed NEW ideas which Obama has brought to the table.
Can you even imagine for a second what things would be like now with McCain and Palin? Good lord it's scary to even think about. Someone who admittedly knows nada about the economy and a person who couldn't even finish her job as Governor who can barely form 2 sentences together?

"I recently saw a poll which said that 18% (yes, you heard that correctly) 18% of Americans think the Sun revolves around the Earth. I kid you not."
The below is from The Guardian:
Half of British adults do not believe in evolution, with at least 22% preferring the theories of creationism or intelligent design to explain how the world came about, according to a survey.
The poll found that 25% of Britons believe Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is "definitely true", with another quarter saying it is "probably true". Half of the 2,060 people questioned were either strongly opposed to the theory or confused about it.
The Rescuing Darwin survey, published to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species, found that around 10% of people chose young Earth creationism – the belief that God created the world some time in the last 10,000 years – over evolution.
About 12% preferred intelligent design, the idea that evolution alone is not enough to explain the structures of living organisms. The remainder were unsure, often mixing evolution, intelligent design and creationism together. The survey was conducted by the polling agency ComRes on behalf of the Theos thinktank.

DALLAS (Reuters Life!) - More Americans believe in a literal hell and the devil than Darwin's theory of evolution, according to a new Harris poll released on Thursday.
It is the latest survey to highlight America's deep level of religiosity, a cultural trait that sets it apart from much of the developed world
your implication was clear; those that have religious beliefs are to be marginalized as uninformed and "ignorant".

"Cargar, what did Henry Public say about taking over the backroom w/out paying a fee?"
Was that only yesterday, Snappy? Yes, need to confer with CobbleSnaps and Biff about venue. Herkimer and I went to Henry Pubic for a couple of drinks and burgers last night. Since it was on official PLUSA business, we expensed it, of course (and hope people pay their dues so Cobble can reimburse us).
We met one of the owners, Matt, a really nice guy. He reads Brownstoner, and posts in the Forum. He was surprised to learn that regular Brownstoner posters actually know one another. His first question was, "What's the story with The What?", lol. They would definitely have to charge us if they gave us the back room since they'd be required to turn away all their dinner customers, unless we did it on the early side, like 5 to 8, which we said won't work, or on another day, like Monday. But then he suggested we go take over their other place, Brooklyn Social, where they have no dining customers to turn away; he said they serve paninis there so we can have food if we want, and said we can definitely bring in our own desserts (which means I have to make m4l his damn brownies).
So, it doesn't sound like Henry Public will work, but Brooklyn Social is a good option. I also throw it back to you, Cobble and Biff for venue thoughts. We can always do Ellis again.

That would be interesting to find out, but I think you're stretching.
I think we both know that most people who believe the Sun revolves around the earth learned this from religion who tells them that the Earth is the center of the universe.
And where did I bring up party lines? You're getting way too defensive. There are religious people in all parties of politics. And people who look to religion before science (or reason)...yes...they do scare me. A lot.
If you DO want to talk about parties though...you don't find it interesting that the party which speaks of small government and keeping it out of people's lives are the same ones who want to swoop and tell people who they can and can not marry and when and when they will not have a child inside THEIR body.
Think about it. If you don't think the majority of those people are religious, you are in denial.

It's like someone making $1MM having a $1MM mortgage. The cost to service it at 2% is $20,000, chump change.
if the markets were as concerned about these levels of debt, we would be in a much more problematic state. The market understands that 100% of GDP is no big deal.

I even went to Baptist school for a couple years from 4-6 grade and they didn't teach that. It does say something like that in the Bible, but it is generally brushed off."
You might be right about that.

I can understand Arkady's rationale, not wanting 4 different people on the lease for business purposes, but can a landlord really dictate, if i qualify for, and sign the lease on my own, who i can let live in the other 2 bedrooms (within reason, if i owned property i wouldn't want my rental unit turning into a flophouse)"
Yes she can. The lease states who will be living in the apt when you sign it. You can't just get a roommate later. But you can get married or have a child. (I see rob's not reading this thread).

DIBS,
I have to disagree with you there,
there is a cost to service that debt.
Especially when an increasing amount of that debt is held by foreign powers.
If China decides to suddenly dump all those treasuries, watch how quickly that cost comes home to roost.
or when that debt from intergovernmental holdings that has been owed to the social security trust begins to turn upside down and we can't meet those obligations to our seniors because we are servicing our debt to international investors.

I have to believe that basic human rights (FOR ALL) is right. You don't have to think so, but I do and will continue to fight for it...for myself and for others.
No party or political organization is always correct, but in this country...at this moment in time, the more conservative people in this country (whether they are religious or not) are not able, willing or believe that all people should have the same rights at birth and that is a big problem for me.
I flat out think they are wrong. Assuming you are not gay, perhaps when you come back in your next life as such and realize that you are not born with the same rights as everyone else, perhaps you would feel differently.

Well, talk about a strange coincidence....
I had to pull away from the OT because I received a call from a company that is interested in using fiber-optic sensors to measure the effect of melting glaciers on the temperature profile of the ocean.
I know you're probably all wondering -with baited breath - about how fiber optics can be used to measure temperature. Why, I'd be happy to explain. When you sent a pulse of single-wavelenth light down an optical fiber, there is a phenomenon known as "back-scattering", in which some light is transmitted back. One type of back-scattering is called "Raman back scattering" and there are two components to it. One component is light that is reflected back at a slightly higher wavelength than the original transmission. Another is light that is reflected back at a slightly lower wavelength. It turns out that the ratio of these two forms of backscattering is directly propertional to the fiber's temperature. How about that??? So, if you hook up the fiber to an optical time-domain reflectometer, one can derive the temperature at every point along the fiber. The fiber becomes a sensor!!!
OK, everybody, wake up - the lecture is over.

fabulous quote, Arkady! Although I would change "individuals" to "cats" :-)
Resent Al Gore all you want for making money (G-d forbid, he should make money- but isn't that exactly what any of us want to do?), there are reputable scientists who can back up global warming with actual science. They track trends, air quality, polar ice, animal populations ,etc. They depend on scientific method. There is a methodology to science- people who want intelligent design taught forget this major fact. They also forget that science does not demand a belief in G-d (or not).
"you don't find it interesting that the party which speaks of small government and keeping it out of people's lives are the same ones who want to swoop and tell people who they can and can not marry and when and when they will not have a child inside THEIR body."
11217 is completely right. Because forcing religion on the populace- whether by demanding creationism be taught alongside Darwin, or telling women when, if and how they can have sex or children, or refusing equal rights to gays- is advocating government intrusion where is it not warranted nor wanted.

Bxgrl;
The debate over gloabl warming is not a disagreement about some scientific principles. There are no fundamental scientific principles at stake. The deabte is over the results of scientific modelling, which is a WHOLE other animal.
This modelling involves literally 10's of thousands of line of computer code, massive amounts of data, and hundreds of modelling assumptions. As such, it is highly susceptible to error.
I am not disparaging the work of any scientist who is doing research in this field. As I said above, it may turn out that there is indeed global warming. What I am against are those who want to politicize the debate, and want to declare it "closed". Anyone who talks like that is not acting in the scientific method.

One of Gore’s global warming advisors, CEO Timothy LaSalle, told Gore’s team that CO2 emissions could be neutralized completely by clever use of agriculture and technology, without the need for a global carbon tax or the use of cap and trade systems that Gore, along with people like the Rothschilds, Maurice Strong and Barack Obama, have a huge financial stake in promoting.
The Newsweek article states:
“If we feed the biology and manage grasslands appropriately, we could sequester as much carbon as we emit,” says Timothy LaSalle, CEO of the Rodale Institute, who presented at two summits. The political clash is this: if you tell people soils can be managed to suck up lots of our carbon emissions, it sounds like a get-out-of-jail-free card, and could decrease what little enthusiasm there is for reducing those emissions—as one of Gore’s assistants told LaSalle in asking him to dial down his estimate. (He didn’t.)
So there you have it – LaSalle proposed a way of solving the CO2 issue but was basically told to shove it by Gore’s team because the methods he advocated would eliminate the need for what Gore and his cronies are really pursuing, nightmare regulation, taxation, and control over American’s lives, along with billions of dollars flooding into the coffers of Gore and the rest of the “carbon billionaire” globalists via the carbon trading systems they own.

I get what you are saying about the modeling too, but who wants to take the chance? The planet could be dying as we speak. (obviously I know who wants to take the chance...) I know some will take me for a crazy green hippy for even suggesting it, but it's possible. Certainly a lot of the "modeling" has been showing things getting progressively worse and moving at a faster clip. I just think when we are talking about our ONE AND ONLY PLANET, it would be a good idea to be better safe than sorry. No?
Maybe some of this "modeling" would have been helpful before we invaded Iraq...?

benson- I do understand that. But scientific modelling has its limits and is not 100% . It's a tool. I do agree that people use the issue politically, and that is the case on both sides of the fence. But get a politician involved and you can kiss intelligent discourse out the door. If we banned politicians we could save the world from the pollution of all that hot air.
Legion- no one can debate a 6 month old fetus is a child. We can debate at what point a dividing cell should be considered a life in the sense of a human life. I'm sure we'll get ito semantics but I do mean why should a fertilized egg at the moment of conception suddenly claim the same rights as a fully formed fetus/child? One is actual, the other is potential.

Posted by: bxgrl at November 5, 2009 4:32 PM
"I don't understand why would anyone argue against this"
Well,allow me to do so.
It is all very nice for us here on the east coast to argue for things like cap-and-trade, since we don't manufacture anything here anymore.
Who will take the hit from cap-and-trade? Manufacturers, that's who - the sector of the economy that has been hit the hardest.
You want to see the US lose the rest of its industry? Hit them up with cap-and-trade. Yeah, that's the ticket for making sure that the rest of it is packed off to China. Of course, neither China nor Indai will hear a thing about caps, because they, unlike us, still care about their manufacturing sector.
So, to anwer your question: I don't want to see our economy have another shackle put on it for the sake of some phenomenon that is not yet proven.

Sounds more logical to say that sun spot activity is causing this. The sun IS getting hotter as solar flare/sun spot activity has INCREASED since 1980.
Solar activity was at an all time recorded LOW between 1940-1980 , a time of record cold temps. Some of us old enough to remember might recall the "global cooling" hysteria of the 70's (for people my age, I shit you not , Google it).
from Wikipedia
Global cooling was a conjecture during the 1970s of imminent cooling of the Earth's surface and atmosphere along with a posited commencement of glaciation.

China and India are laughing at us on this matter. benson is right about the fact that this puts one more shackle on industry.
It seems that those who have been arguing the loudest against the US corporations shipping jobs overseas and the plight of the US worker are the ones who are arguing the loudest for these issues that will further push industry offshore.

townhouselady,
I hear you. So I will through out this question:
does the 7, 8, 9 month fetus have rights as a human being?
no need to answer. just further illustrating the point to 11217 about how our concepts can change on both sides, and they don't necessarily denote "ignorance".

benson- not proven in the eyes of some people and well proven to others. Cap and trade won't be much of an issue if we're all gasping for air. I have a problem leaving a world for our children where they'll be wearing gas masks, and the only elephants they be able to see will be a political symbol or on a glass slide.

"Who will take the hit from cap-and-trade? Manufacturers, that's who - the sector of the economy that has been hit the hardest."
This is like when someone argues that cutting down trees in the rainforest is a good thing because it keeps people employed. Let's think about the bigger picture. We do not have a right to destroy this planet! Take the resources being wasted on the military, the space program, etc. and employ individuals who are in industries that are most harmful to the environment.
Losing jobs in the short term to protect the planet in the long term seems to be a sacrifice well worth making.
Think BIG. Think about the planet. Think about our kids.
Stop endangering species, stop dumping toxic waste, stop in the name of love!

The scientific consensus is that there is global warming.
Posted by: bxgrl at November 5, 2009 4:34 PM
POZNAN, Poland - The UN global warming conference currently underway in Poland is about to face a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who are criticizing the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. Set for release this week, a newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report features the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN. The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spoke out in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers.

Did you guys complain when Cheney made a fortune on his Halliburton investment?
Time, Inc:
Russert asked, "Were you involved in any way in the awarding of those contracts?" Cheney's reply: "Of course not, Tim ... And as Vice President, I have absolutely no influence of, involvement of, knowledge of in any way, shape or form of contracts led by the [Army] Corps of Engineers or anybody else in the Federal Government."
Cheney's relationship with Halliburton has been nothing but trouble since he left the company in 2000. Both he and the company say they have no ongoing connections. But TIME has obtained an internal Pentagon e-mail sent by an Army Corps of Engineers official—whose name was blacked out by the Pentagon—that raises questions about Cheney's arm's-length policy toward his old employer. Dated March 5, 2003, the e-mail says "action" on a multibillion-dollar Halliburton contract was "coordinated" with Cheney's office. The e-mail says Douglas Feith, a high-ranking Pentagon hawk, got the "authority to execute RIO," or Restore Iraqi Oil, from his boss, who is Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz. RIO is one of several large contracts the U.S. awarded to Halliburton last year.
The e-mail says Feith approved arrangements for the contract "contingent on informing WH [White House] tomorrow. We anticipate no issues since action has been coordinated w VP's [Vice President's] office." Three days later, the Army Corps of Engineers gave Halliburton the contract, without seeking other bids. TIME located the e-mail among documents provided by Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group.

“I am a skeptic…Global warming has become a new religion.” - Nobel Prize Winner for Physics, Ivar Giaever.
“Since I am no longer affiliated with any organization nor receiving any funding, I can speak quite frankly….As a scientist I remain skeptical.” - Atmospheric Scientist Dr. Joanne Simpson, the first woman in the world to receive a PhD in meteorology and formerly of NASA who has authored more than 190 studies and has been called “among the most preeminent scientists of the last 100 years.”
Warming fears are the “worst scientific scandal in the history…When people come to know what the truth is, they will feel deceived by science and scientists.” - UN IPCC Japanese Scientist Dr. Kiminori Itoh, an award-winning PhD environmental physical chemist.
“The IPCC has actually become a closed circuit; it doesn’t listen to others. It doesn’t have open minds… I am really amazed that the Nobel Peace Prize has been given on scientifically incorrect conclusions by people who are not geologists,” - Indian geologist Dr. Arun D. Ahluwalia at Punjab University and a board member of the UN-supported International Year of the Planet.
“The models and forecasts of the UN IPCC "are incorrect because they only are based on mathematical models and presented results at scenarios that do not include, for example, solar activity.” - Victor Manuel Velasco Herrera, a researcher at the Institute of Geophysics of the National Autonomous University of Mexico
“It is a blatant lie put forth in the media that makes it seem there is only a fringe of scientists who don’t buy into anthropogenic global warming.” - U.S Government Atmospheric Scientist Stanley B. Goldenberg of the Hurricane Research Division of NOAA.
“Even doubling or tripling the amount of carbon dioxide will virtually have little impact, as water vapour and water condensed on particles as clouds dominate the worldwide scene and always will.” – . Geoffrey G. Duffy, a professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering of the University of Auckland, NZ.
“After reading [UN IPCC chairman] Pachauri's asinine comment [comparing skeptics to] Flat Earthers, it's hard to remain quiet.” - Climate statistician Dr. William M. Briggs, who specializes in the statistics of forecast evaluation, serves on the American Meteorological Society's Probability and Statistics Committee and is an Associate Editor of Monthly Weather Review.
“For how many years must the planet cool before we begin to understand that the planet is not warming? For how many years must cooling go on?" - Geologist Dr. David Gee the chairman of the science committee of the 2008 International Geological Congress who has authored 130 plus peer reviewed papers, and is currently at Uppsala University in Sweden.
“Gore prompted me to start delving into the science again and I quickly found myself solidly in the skeptic camp…Climate models can at best be useful for explaining climate changes after the fact.” - Meteorologist Hajo Smit of Holland, who reversed his belief in man-made warming to become a skeptic, is a former member of the Dutch UN IPCC committee.
“Many [scientists] are now searching for a way to back out quietly (from promoting warming fears), without having their professional careers ruined.” - Atmospheric physicist James A. Peden, formerly of the Space Research and Coordination Center in Pittsburgh.
“Creating an ideology pegged to carbon dioxide is a dangerous nonsense…The present alarm on climate change is an instrument of social control, a pretext for major businesses and political battle. It became an ideology, which is concerning.” - Environmental Scientist Professor Delgado Domingos of Portugal, the founder of the Numerical Weather Forecast group, has more than 150 published articles.
“CO2 emissions make absolutely no difference one way or another….Every scientist knows this, but it doesn’t pay to say so…Global warming, as a political vehicle, keeps Europeans in the driver’s seat and developing nations walking barefoot.” - Dr. Takeda Kunihiko, vice-chancellor of the Institute of Science and Technology Research at Chubu University in Japan.
“The [global warming] scaremongering has its justification in the fact that it is something that generates funds.” - Award-winning Paleontologist Dr. Eduardo Tonni, of the Committee for Scientific Research in Buenos Aires and head of the Paleontology Department at the University of La Plata. # #

NO, No, no. Bxgrl, you and the other Obamacans don't get it. There is another underlying issue here that is deeper. I am paraphasing David Einhorn here. People are angry because at some level, Americans understand that the washington-wall street "partnership" has rewarded the least deserving people and institutions at the expense of the prudent. They dont know the particulars or how to argue against the "without banks, we have no economy" demagogues. So, they fight healthcare reform, where they have enough personal experience to equip them to argue with congressmen at town hall meetings. The revolt over healthcare isn't really about healthcare, but represents a broader upset at Washington. The lack of trust over the inability to deal seriously with the people who are responsible for this mess feeds the lack of trust over healthcare.

I perfectly well get it stevieb. Don't even think of using that new agey bs on me. Anyone who lacks the cpacity to understand what that sign wasn't appropriate or see that it is highly offensive is hardly capable of assessing the state of health care, Washington, or anything else, let along place the blame squarely where it belongs- the previous administration. That's why the nutjobs like Bachmann have taken over. They care as much about fiscal responsibility as Hitler cared about peace on earth.
Posted by: bxgrl at November 5, 2009 5:43 PM

stevieb, c'mon, give it a rest.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 5, 2009 5:45 PM
Bxgrl, what I meant is Obama and the administration is not addressing or acknowledging that there is a deeper underlying issue here, which is the public resentment of the bailouts. Obama and co. thinks that all these guys are right wing nut jobs. Michelle Bachman, Glenn Beck, and Sarah Palin are trying their best to fan the flame of the public resentments and that could turn into a wild fire that destroys anything that is in its way. People who are angry do irrational things. Angry people were what made it possible for the likes of Hitler and Mussolini to rise to power. This is a dangerous time for the country and for the administration.
Posted by: stevieb at November 5, 2009 5:51 PM
stevie, btw, I need your email address if you want me to email you details of the gathering
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 5, 2009 5:51 PM
These assholes are beyond irrational. Frankly they should be arrested for treason and promoting terrorism. They aren't the only ones pissed about the bailout, but most of us in the country can see a bigger picture- No, this is about being whiney sore losers, the loss of power and sheer greed. And pure imbecility - as I said- if they haven't got the brain capacity to assess their message, they haven't got the brain capacity to understand it either. Most of those protesting in DC today have health insurance or medicare. How stupid do you have to be to not understand that the government provides medicare? Done. Said my piece and sticking by it.
Posted by: bxgrl at November 5, 2009 6:00 PM
Bxgrl, I agree with you that they are assholes. There are always right wing nutjobs out there. But what is different this time is they are also able to recruit new members from those who are also very angry at the washington-wall street partnership.
i dont think anyone wants to see an angry mob with pitchforks and torches gather outside of DIBS' house demanding his head be cut off. Sadly, I see us heading in that direction because Sarah palin and glenn beck are succeeding and the public wants blood.
Posted by: stevieb at November 5, 2009 6:10 PM
stevie- understand something. These people are Republicans, conservatives. They aren't going after dibs- they're going after Democrats, moderates and liberals. Their demographic is white, middle to upper middle + class, and tellingly, not so well educated. In fact, they can't even figure out who they really are because successful financiers like dibs make them crazy. They play into the lowest common denominator. They're into fear, they are hypocrites and they have short memories. They aren't recruiting, they're playing to the nutjob constituents the Bush administration tried to make credible.

Go back and read them. They were presented not only by myself but others as well. You just can't seem to comprehend that when people bring in large amounts of revenue to an organization they should be paid above and beyond a normal base salary. That's the way the industry is structured. If more industries paid incentive compensatio like that maybe they'd be better off.
Goldman Sachs is the poster child for huge bonuses and it's the poster child for massive profits. Is it starting to click now????
You need to spell out for us which parts of that you can't get your brain around.

The industry is structured to socialize losses and privatize gains. Where is the justice?

I think you should go back to managing long only money at excelsior. You would not know what long short meant if it hit you over the head. Oh, that's right, you were forced out of US trust because you couldn't hack it.

LOL, stevie......I'm actually doing it though as opposed to you.
Forced out is a great way to put it....the package was mind bogglingly huge when they consolidated the mutual funds with Columbia.
LOL...all the way to the bank.

The justice should rest with the upper management who are responsible for the OVERALL profitability of the firm. You do not overlook those making money throughout the firm just because parts of the firm really fucked up. The pay czar should focus on the management, not the worker bees who are actually bringing in the honey.
I don't know what line of work you are in but it is very common in business for many of the underlings to make more than the CEO & Chairman because they are "producers." Without the producers, the business fails. This is why people at AIG still need to get paid...or they get poached away.
Dick Fuld, Ken Lewis, the guys at at the top C, JPM and MS need to police the problem areas of the businesses and I agree that, in the case where they still have TARP money, need to be supervised and answer to the government, until that TARP money is paid back. But when you've got an employee bringing in $25MM, $50MM, $100MM or $1B in revenues...you pay them or lose them.

Ah, this is the most reasonable thing I have heard from you so far.

This is not the point. All these banks that ran up risk should have been allowed to fail in a controlled fashion by the government. The flip side of bailing out these banks is creating a huge moral hazard. So what if a few deserving people didn't get paid for a year? maybe they will be more careful with choosing their future employers going forward.

It's perfectly legal to advertise "no shares." It's also perfectly legal for any leaseholder to move in a roommate at any time, as well as a spouse and any children they have. The only restriction is total number of people per room, which varies depending on the overall number of rooms, but is generally two per room.

And you MUST try Vutera - I think you'd really like it. Gorgeous spot and still very much under the radar (most people don't know it exists!!)

it was not meant to be an insult. I really think you are a perma bull and only know one way to make money. I don't think you can short yourself out of a paper bag. No disrespect.
