WHO THE HELL VOTED FOR AL VANN?
Posted by: faithful at November 4, 2009 9:16 AM
Yeeeessssssss!!!!
Posted by: benson at November 4, 2009 9:17 AM
probably the same people who voted for mayoral term limits
Posted by: dittoburg at November 4, 2009 9:18 AM
And on another front: Warren Buffett makes a big bet on American railroads:
Yeeeessssss!!!
(spoken as an owner of shares in Norfolk Southern railway)

Hmmmh. Can't begin to imagine what Benson is so happy about this morning. Must be the results of the Special Election in the NY23rd.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 4, 2009 9:19 AM
The world as we know it will continue!!!! NYC will not fall into the abyss of corrupt, backroom, Democratic politics.
BHO, Miss Muffett and the others will likely get priced out of the property market!!!!
And yes, WHO THE HELL VOTED FOR AL VANN?????????
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 4, 2009 9:19 AM
Ha! I live in a red district... who'd a thunk! While $190 per vote seems a bit excessive -- it all worked out in the end. Mr. Thompson can just go back to being comptroller... oh, wait. No he can't.
Posted by: tybur6 at November 4, 2009 9:19 AM
tybur, I saw your late night posts in the HOTD and COTD threads. RAOTFLMMFAO!
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 4, 2009 9:21 AM
We all knew Bloomy was going to win.
Benson, I already posted the Warren news yesterday.
In other news... FIAT is coming!!! Their CEO is going to play some hardball in Detroit. Check him out...

benson, I owned some BNI in my IRA. NSC is now a much cheaper P/E with a 2.77% yield. I'm going to buy some.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 4, 2009 9:23 AM
I DEMAND A RECOUNT!
I know I really won, but of course Mr. I'm-so-effin-rich-Bloomberg found a way to cheat me again!
Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at November 4, 2009 9:24 AM
DIBS, your glee at the prospect of my getting priced out of the property market speaks volumes. And by the way, I could certainly buy a palace in your neighborhood.
Posted by: Miss Muffett at November 4, 2009 9:25 AM
CGar -- I'm committed myself to turning over a new leaf!
Posted by: tybur6 at November 4, 2009 9:27 AM
DIBS;
I've long admired NSC as a corporation. They stick to their knitting of running an efficient railroad, and they constantly plow back porfits into improving their service.
The story of the turnaround of the American railroads is an unsung great tale.
Posted by: benson at November 4, 2009 9:27 AM
Miss Muffett, are you still trying to time the market??? When do you think prices will bottom for brownstones in Brooklyn??
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 4, 2009 9:27 AM
Does anyone ever feel like they have a hangover when they've had nothing at all to drink the night before?

I cannot believe he won!! So what he has past accomplishments. The fact is what has he done for us lately!

Hey Biff! I hope not. Everyone around me at work seems to be sick.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 4, 2009 9:31 AM
Closer than I thought and I hope Mike will not regret his 3rd term. Imagine if Thompson had given some more effort he could have been mayor. The slogan "Eight is Enough" worked well enough but still one note.
Posted by: DeLepp at November 4, 2009 9:31 AM
I made it back from Florida in time to vote last night. Did not vote for winner in mayoral contest...but hope will be humbling to the egomaniac that all that money (and my recycling bin is full from all the junk mail) couldn't buy the love.
Very sad about Maine marriage vote. But glad WSJ, Palin, Limbaugh and all the wingnuts reputdiated in rural upstate NY.
Posted by: Petebklyn at November 4, 2009 9:32 AM
DIBS - not trying to time the market per se - we are actively looking but are not in a rush. We'll buy when we find a place we love at a price we feel comfortable with, but as I've said repeatedly (too much for some), I think prices still have further down to go. And even if the market stops going down, it certainly isn't about to shoot up anytime soon - don't see the fundamentals to support significant price increases. The idea of being "priced out" is the last thing we're worried about in this climate. The bigger challenge for us is simply inventory but that is slowly creeping up as old-timers seem to be accepting the "new normal" and putting their places on the market.

So every morning I wake up and go into the bathroom, there are at least 3 or 4 tiny bugs flying around the sink. This is a new phenomenon. Does anyone know what they are and is it excess humidity that is attracting them?
Is it possible they are fruit flies? (No Homo)
I did a bit of Googling and someone else had a problem with some bugs called springtails.
Anyone have insight?

Maybe it's the newly morphed creatures from ensuite bathrooms called Poo Mist Bugs.
Posted by: Kensingtonian at November 4, 2009 9:39 AM
Biff, I used to get those. Be sure to pull the stopper on your tub and sink drains at night. That's how they get in.

Biffers - I had springtails this summer & have a really good picture of them that I took so a biologist friend could identify what I had. Give me your email & I'll send it. They leap about - hence the name. If yours are flying, they're something else.

Arkady, thanks. I'm at biffchampion at yahoo dot com. Although the critters do fly at times, they usually just hang out around the drain in the sink. We never had this problem before. Maybe they'll disappear with the cold weather?

Bed Bugs are a real issue in NYC. But the coverup of what's lurking and truly problematic is the Sink Bug issue. I heard from BHO that the Bloomberg administration has a covert war to cover up this issue that is affecting millions of New Yorkers. Thompson didn't address the issue because he doesn't want to have to deal with it if elected.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 4, 2009 9:53 AM
I think that the sink bugs are an attempt by Miss Muffet to drive down property values
Posted by: benson at November 4, 2009 9:55 AM
chicken, you think? I think Fiat is a good brand and bringing in competitive small size vehicles can help push them over. Americans always made great 8 cylinder cars but they couldn't quiet get the small engines right. Look at cars like Ford Focus. Things would fall apart after 80K while Japanese kept on going. I think Fiat can prove to be a good competitor in the market. Time will tell.

I will not buy a GM or Chryler car. I try to avoid products made by government-run entities, be it the post office, Amtrak or GM. Frankly now that GM and Chrysler are owned by the UAW and the Federal government, I hope that they get run into the ground.
I believe I'm not alone in my thinking. Ford is on its way to surpassing GM in market share.

The talk of the Amityville Horror reminds me of that brilliant riff Eddie Murphy did in Delirious where he talks about how white people always refuse to leave a house that is possessed and foolishly continue trying to fight the evil spirits. I credit him with being a good corporate officer and he's very good with the numbers but I don't think Fiat is a good brand. It's certainly better than the mess that he inherited though - the still fall apart before 80k miles but at least it's not because of rust.
They are on a roll because of the success of the 500 but I don't see much beyond that.
Getting Chrysler was a good move because it didn't cost them anything - so it's all gravy for them - but anything that they make, I can think of several competitors that are better for the same money, or cheaper for the same product.

TOL has been a volatile stock this year but if the market bottoms in 1H 2010, this stock is going to be back on a climb.

I know some of you really like Minard, but in case you missed it here was a really nice one from him/her posted last night. He/she has tried to have me banned?? I send in tips to Mr. B all the time, try to get the conversations going when threads are slow and generally contribute to the discussion best I can. And he doesn't believe I'm a homeowner, apparently...
"I am late to this discussion but I just want to say that 11217 is my least favorite poster. He has quite often attacked me for my opinions and attempted to insult me with phrases like "missing a chromosome" or "moron". He is a nasty piece of work and makes this blog less enjoyable. I doubt very much he owns anything more substantial than a bicycle. I have implored Mr. B to ban him as I think he brings a disturbing, almost psychotic tone to brownstoner.com."
And these are a couple of very nice quotes from him/her last week...but IM the only one who says nasty things...

If you think I am advocating for the bail-out of GM or Chrysler, you are dead wrong. I think that the federal government should not have given these companies ONE cent. They should have gone into chapter 11, tore up their contract with the UAW, and started again.

cobble, heat's been on for a month, but only came "on" rarely. Did this morning, definitely.
You can turn all 4 burners on the stove for 10-15 mins (don't believe all the crap about how dangerous it is, isn't it like cooking?) if you're nearby. Gas is typically paid for by LL and 4 burners=40kbtu, enough to nicely warm a 2-bed awhile.
Posted by: cmu at November 4, 2009 11:08 AM
Yes, the only way the auto companies will survive is if the union contracts are torn up or completely renegotiated. How long will it take for the union management to get it through their thick skulls that a wage reduction and benefit concessions for ALL is better than many being out of work?????
The "unborn" issue is the most ludicrous of all.

And personally, I'm SO glad Bloomberg won, although surprised it was by such a small margin.
Also wondering if some of the Republicans have some thoughts for me on this. I was watching Charlie Rose last night and the discussion was surrounding the National Debt.
Apparently 5 TRILLION of the 9 Trillion debt the U.S. has is due to the 01/03 Bush Tax cuts and changes to the drug benefits for Medicare. 3 Trillion of the debt is due to the economic recession and just 10% of the National debt has been spent by both Bush and Obama on the Recovery of said economic recession.
How do the Republicans justify spending that 5 Trillion on tax cuts (mainly for the rich). Especially when there was no thought as to how this was to be paid for and that it would all go towards our debt.
Obama and Congress are trying to come up with a cost cost neutral health plan and all the GOP are against it, but they were fine to basically throw 5 Trillion dollars down the toilet.
Anyone have thoughts? I'm genuinely curious. I was shocked to find this out because the debt has become such a problem that there are very few ideas (it seems) on how to come out from under it, which may eventually make the U.S. go down a similar path to Argentina when their currency became so worthless that their economy collapsed.

11217- good post but you're asking for logic from soe people (And you tried so hard last night with stevieb :)
as many analysts have said, don't get too happy over the off year elections- they're local and focused on local issues. The GOP would be fools to think this means they are taking back anything. More interesting was the Hoffman loss upstate. Since the polls show a majority of this country wants healthcare reform, still think Obama will do a better job than McCain would have and a piddling 20% define themselves as Republicans, dancing on the graves of the Democrats is way too premature. In fact the GOP is going to have a good time of eating its own young when they start driving out the moderates in their own party. Yessssssss!!!

I TOTALLY agree with you on this, Bxgrl. THAT was the bellweather. An area which has been a Republican stronghold for over 100 years AND a Conserative candidate which was endorsed by basically all the GOP have as potential Presidential nominees for 2012 (scary, I know).
The Democrat in Virginia wasn't a good candidate and NJ is basically bankrupt and Corzine used to run Goldman Sachs. Neither of those races were about Obama or a referendum on his policies...they were what they were.
I'm disappointed in Maine today. Very disappointed.

Posted by: bxgrl at November 4, 2009 11:38 AM
I'll tell you a big part of what factored into the NJ election seeing that I live here and voted for Christie.
The corruption scandals. When the FBI arrested those 44 officials in the corruption sting most, if not all, were Democrats AND most of not all were in Hudson County. Hudson County is typically a Democratic stronghold. What was Corzines response to this? That same week he went out stumping with the Mayor Healy of Jersey City who had had almost half of his team indicted.
If he's going to bury his head and not go out and kick some serious ass when a huge portion of his party is up to their eyeballs in scandal then I don't want him minding the store.
Another big issue is the tax burden. Christie campaigned big on making Jersey more affordable and putting a referendum on raising property taxes.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at November 4, 2009 11:38 AM
11217, I agree that asking Mr. B to ban you is extreme, particularly since I can think of a others who deserve to be banned far more than you ; ) Seriously, though, I don't understand why some people don't just ignore posters whom they don't like.
I'm also disappointed in Maine's voters. And in Rhode Island for making indoor prostitution illegal.

sorry Cobble, been in Florida last 2 days so missed your sex life stories :)
very hot down there and when arrived back last night cool breeze felt great. I guess one can get acclimated but the bright sun and heat/humidity in Ft.Laud were too much. Jumping in ocean however was great.
Was 66 inside house last night when arrived back home. So I let the heat come on this morning.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at November 4, 2009 12:20 PM
What goes well with Peppermint Schnappes THL? Clearly, for "Stiff Nipples", it has to be a cold drink, served in a frosted glass. I'm thinking iced Stoli, too.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 4, 2009 12:20 PM
Yes, chilled vodka, a little peppermint schnapps and two red jujubees as a garnish.

I'll need to mark it in my calendar. That brings my total number of social events in December up to 1.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at November 4, 2009 12:31 PM
"Is the gathering on December 3 confirmed?"
Yeah, as to date, though we're still working on venue. I spoke to someone at Henry Public last weekend about us comandeering (not renting) the back room, and he said they could acommodate us, but I have to go back and talk to one of the owners, which I'm going to do tonight.
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 4, 2009 12:32 PM
Biff, I suspect your holiday dance card will be full soon enough, which is why we reserved the 3rd early! I'm already seeing Christmas decorations - Christmas! - on Court Street and in shop windows on Lexington.
Snappy, you can have yours with Milk Duds. Is there any liquor that will darken the Stoli for you, or do we have to use food coloring?
Posted by: CarrollGardened at November 4, 2009 12:34 PM
Milk duds? They're huge! Are you having this drink in a pint glass?
How bout the chocolate covered jujubes or chocolate chips?

Ooooops!
Cobble, have I ever told you that you're such a sweet person.
**borrowing Snappy's sheepish grin**
Posted by: Expert Textpert at November 4, 2009 12:37 PM
Hmmmm...I'm slightly opposed to food coloring (no real reason why) and I don't know of any liquor that would darken it so I may have to call my drink a vitiligo stiff nipple :)

Methinks I figured out who "Minard" is.
See this post from him today:
"suck it up and buy a car. In the end, all grown-ups living in the Boros know that a private car, expensive as it is to own and garage, is the only reliable form of transportation. Car-pool with neighbors to be environment-friendly. New cars are very clean and fuel-efficient. Don't expect public transit or the public sector to meet your needs or make your life better or more convenient. The MTA is on a downward slide and the transit worker union is doing everything in its power to limit the ferries or other forms of private public transit so that when they strike the city can be brought more fully to its knees. "
Who used to extoll the virtues of cars, use the term "grown-up", knew alot about architecture and had it in for 11217??
Does the name "Sam" ring a bell?
Posted by: benson at November 4, 2009 12:58 PM
benson- I don't recall sam being so much of an architectural historian, though. Or sounding quite so pompous (sorry Minard!)
Posted by: bxgrl at November 4, 2009 1:01 PM

Benson...I've been thinking the same thing for WEEKS!! I just didn't want to say so. I'm glad to hear you say it though. He was the person on this blog who had it out for me most, and Minard started posting right around the same time Sam stopped.
The only thing is that I thought Sam said he lived in Park Slope...or was it Cobble Hill...?
Posted by: 11217 at November 4, 2009 1:10 PM
11217;
Sam was amiguous about where he lived. At first, it seemed that he lived in BH, then later he would say PS.
Posted by: benson at November 4, 2009 1:13 PM
I believe sam mentioned he moved to Park Slope but he was always a huge booster of Brooklyn Heights, as is Minard. Sam also often complimented me on my humour, which was the prime indication to me that he was completely off his rocker.
(Just kidding sam and/or Minard. I happen to like both of you).

Biff;
If you recall, when Minard first appeared on the scene, he was quite friendly to you and DIBS, as if he already knew you.
Posted by: benson at November 4, 2009 1:18 PM
Benson,
I've thought since day one of Minard posting that it was Sam. And I think you're right...even though he would say he lived in Park Slope, if anyone EVER said anything remotely negative about Brooklyn Heights or Cobble Hill, he would get really pissed.
Plus, he literally started posting days within when Sam stopped.
And the super snobbish attitude and intense disdain for me seemed to convince me even more.
Sam was too involved with brownstoner and commenting to give up and not start again with a new name...in my opinion...
Posted by: 11217 at November 4, 2009 1:19 PM
Also...
Sam literally seemed to despise people who bought studios and routinely called me an idiot for living in one...
As you will see from the comments I posted above/earlier from Minard, he has the same intense feelings of nastiness towards people who buy (or live in) studios.
Anyone who feels strongly enough to denounce someone for the way they choose to live their life is a little off their rocker...no?
Posted by: 11217 at November 4, 2009 1:22 PM
Yes, benson, he was.
And I always was pretty friendly with sam. I don't think sam is shillstoner.

"If you recall, when Minard first appeared on the scene, he was quite friendly to you and DIBS, as if he already knew you."
Benson, he may have been friendly with DIBS, but, with respect to me, Minard and I got into a few cyber fights as soon as he first appeared. We didn't get along at all. Only recently have we become a bit more friendly as we've shared similar views on a few threads that related to Brooklyn Heights.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 4, 2009 1:27 PM
Sam was never as opinionated on the minutiae as shillstoner is.

How did you know about Green eggs and ham?? Just curious.
Posted by: benson at November 4, 2009 1:49 PM
Gem,
I really don't get it either. I mean, I know I have the tendency to get a little excited in my posting sometimes, but I find the notion of having me banned to be ridiculous. Basically because Minard doesn't want anyone to disagree with him. Or doesn't want ME to disagree with him.
A "normal" person would be ok with disagreements, which is why I think it's Sam. He always had it out for me, in the same way Minard does.
I've even tried to agree with Minard to form a truce, but he then comes back with the "are you on meds" thing or something to the affect that I'm a pyscho.
Now that I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if Minard was stevieb too. Seems stevieb's only mission is to talk sh*t about me. Even when everyone else and their mother is telling him what an idiot he is.
And here I am thinking I'm doing so much better to get along. :)

OMG - the prices there are silly
2-3 BR co-ops approx. 1000-1300 sqft can be had for anywhere between $350-$500K depending on the shape of the interior. Some of the places looked gorgeous, some had terraces, many had garage spaces.
am sorta considering giving it a look

Dave, Dave, Dave. People who live in glass houses and run errands for someone who's told him "Motherfu*k you Dave!" probably isn't the best judge of relative class.
And, if you want to compare relative number of fat people, Philadelphia will HAVE to lose to about 98% of the country, including NYC. Is it any surprise that Philadelphia's most iconic symbol is a CHEESESTEAK? I think not.

Two good friends of mine lives in Jackson Heights and LOVES it! So much so that they own a place and are looking to upgrade. They are all about space for the money.
I had them out to Park Slope for a day of shopping/brunch about a month ago and they couldn't BELIEVE the amount of stores/restaurants/bars, etc we had. I mean, they had been to PS before, but didn't really "get" the scope of what we have to offer.
They said...oh, you should come out to Jackson Heights one day for brunch too "but I'll be cooking because there's nothing in Jackson Heights"

Gem: They really and truly love Jackson Heights and don't plan to leave, but yes...they said they are disappointed with the offerings in the categories you mention...nice markets, cafes, bakeries, etc. Good for Indian and Columbian, but how often does one really want to eat Indian...?
I guess if you have a car, it's all a non-issue though! :)

"DH - why do you dig JH?"
I can't really pinpoint exactly why I like JH - I guess it just feels "real" - i love Brooklyn but it's so sterile now.
You can rent/buy sick apartments for cheap - transport is good and it's diverse without being exclusive to one another.
Food is awesome - great normal bars filled with people from places i've never heard of who aren't bankers or lawyers.

Would love to get Minard's take on Jackson Heights.
Considering he thinks Ft. Greene is "fringe" can only imagine the great insights he'd have into the neighborhood.

dibs, I think I'm disagreeing with you on the car thing today.
First, while some mergers as you mentioned didn't work out, Ford/Jag was good for Jag. Ford/Volvo wasn't bad either.
But I especially disagree on the union thing. Not that's I'm a fan of the UAW, no sir. But the problem is that American cars in the last couple of decades absolutely suck. SUCK!
You can't blame these shit designs on the unions. Management has done that. You can't blame quality problems on unions either (except assembly problems). I always bought American. Last car I had I got so fucked over by Chrysler that I went to Audi. Now that I've owned an A6 and a 328xi, I have a hard time thinking why I would want to go back.
Caddy CTS is a nice car tho.

I have to agree that any Luxury carline that got bought or merged with some American car company usually loses it's edge and prowess
Ford/Jag
Mercedes/Chrysler
Even the high end car companys that have come out of standard car companies like Lexus/infiti and Acura - it's a shame b/c they share the same body shell and can swap parts devaluing the engineering that one is supposed to find in a high-end performance car...
that's why BMW stands alone as greatness

My fave food coloring tidbit is a dye they use on kippers in England. People no longer like the really strong taste of kippers that have been smoked for a long time so they developed a dye that makes them look as if they've been aged. It's called BFK which stands for Brown For Kippers.

Hey, 1121, did you see that 586 4th Street finally sold for 2.275mil recently?
Here were your comments:
HOTD: July 2008
"I think 2.6, (even if the mechanicals are not updated) is totally unrealistic.
Even 2.8 would sound like a relative bargain to me for this house.
I believe comps would support a 3 million dollar asking/selling price, even with the softening market.
Posted by: 11217 at July 21, 2008 2:56 PM"
Open house: jan 2009
The price on the 4th Street house is starting to look downright "cheap"
I'm loving see the prices come down, hoping that soon there will be more folks interested. With each falling price, the pool of people who can afford any given place becomes that much larger.

Say the word and you'll be free
Say the word and be like me
Say the word I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love
In the beginning I misunderstood
But now I've got it, the word is good
Spread the word and you'll be free
Spread the word and be like me
Spread the word I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love
Everywhere I go I hear it said
In the good and the bad books that I have read
Say the word and you'll be free
Say the word and be like me
Say the word I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is post?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, post
Now that I know what I feel must be right
I'm here to show everybody the light
Give the word a chance to say
That the word is just the way
It's the word I'm thinking of
And the only word is post
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, post
Say the word, post

of all the buyers you sent away
They haunt these dusty nabes with the skeleton frames
of burned out houses of the day
They screem your ID at night in their sleep
Their offer sheets lie in rags at your feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
The bitter renters keep roaring on
But when they get to the open house your gone
So baby log in

The game she played lasted all day to way after dark
Now all the girls they criticized her but all the guys just idolized her
‘cause Mary Hill was such a thrill after dark, in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Mary Hill loved to ride on the merry-go-round
All the guys got eager eyes watchin’ Mary go ‘round
Now in the daytime Mary Hill was a teaser
Come the night she was such a pleaser
Mary Hill was such a thrill after dark, in Brooklyn Bridge Park
Whoa Mary Hill sure was fun down at Brooklyn Bridge Park

In Brooklyn bridge Park, in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Sure, Snappy. I'm all in favor of natural body hair - on men only - though as Dave said the other night a little (A LITTLE) grooming never hurt. I'm all in favor of NO body hair on women, so by all means, ladies, shave, pluck and wax away! Thankfully, I'm outta here momentarily!
