New Bike Lane for Williamsburg Street

When we passed by this weekend, we were pleased to see that a temporary bike lane had been erected where Kent Avenue bears right into Williamsburg Street. That stretch can be a little hairy for bicyclists.

This is an especially big deal because it's such a key link between Fort Greene and Williamsburg. It also gets northbound bikes out of the Classon/Flushing/Kent/BQE-exit deathtrap.

This is going to ultimately be part of the Brooklyn Greenway project. The greenway will widen the sidewalks to 30 feet from the property line and create a bike path similar to what exists on the West Side Highway. The Greenway is going to run from the Williamsburg corner of the Navy Yard into DUMBO, along the waterfront past BB Park, through Red Hook, and around to the area near IKEA.
Personally, I think this is a much better idea than taking traffic lanes for bikes. Hope the work comes together as planned.
